Great park. Layout was nice, but we went on an off day. Pitching the tent right on the water, we had a large area to ourselves. Primitive bathrooms near us, but showers within driving/walking distance. Dog friendly. I could see it being a bit less fun if it was crowded, the spaces could be somewhat tight.

So many things about the Illini campground are awesome. The lake is big and pretty, the sites are wooded, there are hot showers and lots of nice roads to ride bikes on. I’d recommend the highest-numbered camp sites — some have really pretty views, and they are near some areas where the kids and dogs can enjoy the water without climbing over tons of rocks. It’s probably not allowed, but nobody gave us a hard time about it. There were some bummers, though. There’s a lot of garbage — old carpet, concrete blocks along the water, as well as bits of stuff around the campsite. There were also an incredible amount and variety of bugs. Millions of tiny gnats everywhere — they’re impossible to keep out of the camper. They blacken the sinks in the restrooms. One giant black buzzing thing that followed our camp members around, one by one, causing them to flee to the safety of the car or camper, shrieking. Even the dog, but she just ran around in circles looking spooked. It was funny until the think landed on my arm(I was trying to show how brave I was) and bit me! We were bummed that the pool hours were so short — 11am to 5pm on weekdays. Especially as hot as it was, we could’ve really used that pool! It also can be quite hard to find a campground host on a weekday. Expect to bike or drive around to find one that’s open, as the campground is quite expansive. Overall, if I lived around here I’d probably come back. If I had a boat I would definitely come back. It was pretty cheap — only $ 20.

Cool state park. Has hiking, fishing, boating, and a remarkable number of sailboats! Fun for the entire family. They have camping grounds. My children enjoy the playgrounds.
