Don’t know why Unilocal reports this shop as closed. It was definitely open this week. My wife loves it and made us go back a second time before leaving. It’s not really my thing so I just waited outside.

This quaint shop seemed very picturesque on the outside, but when we stepped inside, that’s where the trouble began. The owner was not welcoming and was able to make us feel like lower class citizens. A member of my party wanted to snap a picture of us inside the shop, and she was horrified. She claimed that if we posted these photos on Facebook, then someone could steal from her small shop, filled with precious antiques, and that she was not«Walmart» or «Target.» You would think that it would be acceptable to take one picture, since Carmel is after all, a tourist destination, and most of the shops in the town feed off of tourists. We pretended to look around her shop a minute longer, but left her shop in disgust.

A very cool shop! Not so much devoted to Jane Austen herself as to all the delights of the UK, both touristy and traditional. Many antiques and home décor items to browse through plus a few items to raise your eyebows — check out my pic of the William and Catherine masks, plus the Daniel Craig mask! Perhaps that elusive James Bond Halloween costume is now complete!

This place was interesting… but the Jane Austen at Home is a bit of a misnomer… not a ton of authentic Jane Austen stuff, unless you count some DVDs in front. Tons of random antique-y things to browse through. I was most excited about the first edition colored versions of «Alice in Wonderland» that were in the back. Some cute knick-knacks but I wasn’t too impressed.

This appears to be a charming shop in a quaint building in Carmel. How I wish the owner had been gracious: she was engaged in a loud conversation with one of her friends when i entered. She was unwelcoming, gruff, condescending, & impatient when I asked a question about an item that i wished to purchase. She was so insulting that I put the article down & left the shop. Owner needs to read a good book on retail management peractices.
