I don’t get the bad reviews except service maybe if you had a bad experience on that particular day. I am from Texas and this place is the only one around that even comes close to a Tex-Mex taco — homemade tortillas and well seasoned meat(which is typically lacking everywhere else). This is the only place I head to when I want a true ‘fajita’ taco — TexMex style. There are plenty of other decent tacos in the area, but not anything close to a real TexMex fajita and most places don’t make their own tortillas. The only inconsistency I have found at Armadillo Grill is the queso — sometimes really hot and sometimes really bland. Highly recommend the chicken fajita tacos and crunchy regular ground beef tacos.

It’s confusing to order. The guacamole tasted like hot dogs. I am serious. I know that sounds crazy. I have eaten guacamole in many restaurants over the years and have had many different versions but never tasted anything like this. It was in one of my tacos and I also ordered it as a side. I took it back and got a side of beans instead. It’s the first time I can remember sending something back in my life. Service is lackluster. It seems like a place that for drunken young people but they were doing a good business early on a Monday night so I guess some people like the food. My husband said the meat in his tacos was good. I don’t eat meat so I did not have any. I will not go back there. If I need a quick bite, I would go across the street to Weaver Street Market. Any of their prepared foods will be 10x better than this. Oh and the veggie taco has their grilled onions and peppers(which tasted fine) with basically a super cheap iceberg-type salad thrown in, with those pre-shredded carrots and raw mushroom slices. Weird.

The service was terrible and the cashier is rude. My burrito fell apart and so did my friends. They also didn’t deliver the complete order I paid for. Overall a bad place.

It’s like a taco bell with beer. Good for college bros, but no thanks. The ordering tickets are odd, and you pay for each additional item.

This is my absolute favorite spot to dine at in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area! Here’s everything you need to know about A-Grill… Parking: Parking can definitely be an issue at times, but isn’t it always? With that being said, there is a tight, gravel, lot directly behind Armadillo for its patrons. Otherwise, its get in where you fit in… Ambiance: One of the cool things about A-Grill is its versatility. In addition to being a quick week-night option, Armadillo can function as a date place, a nice family spot, or even a getting banged-up with the buddies and watch the game bar if needed — just head upstairs to the relaxed bar area. Ordering: If you’ve never been to A-Grill before, then it might take you a second to digest the ordering process, but not to worry. I trust everyone reading this is a human being, and can figure it out without any further explanation. Its very simple, once you decide what you want. Usually your order is out in about five minutes or so. While waiting, most people use that time to take advantage of the salsa bar, just off to the side. Food: My go to is the steak burrito add/guac. The steak has a great, grilled, smokey flavor to it. I think the grilled flavor of their meats is what really sets A– Grill apart from other tex-mex spots in the area. In addition to the steak burrito, the steak soft tacos are awesome, the Chili con-queso and guac are both tasty and bursting with delicious tex-mex flavors. If you are looking for awesome tex-mex, relaxed atmosphere & great service, Armadillo grill is the spot for you. Armadillo Grill perfectly encompasses everything I value in a dining experience!

Por Dios!!! If you want GOODMEXICAN food, do not come here. This establishment portrays itself as Tex-Mex but does not even have the right to claim that heritage. It is just another Americanized location that serves mediocre and bland tasting food that it sells with the title as Mexican. Do Carrboro a favor and shut yourself down, allowing authenticity to set up.

Worst Tex Mex food ever. And EXPENSIVE! To get something comparable to the standard taco or nachos, you pay a la carte(separately) for cheese, black beans, tomatoes, sour cream, etc. Shocked when our bill was $ 50!!! For four people with two orders of nachos, one order of wings, two soft tacos and a side of queso. $ 50!!! Service at the counter was slow at best. Order taker knew nothing about the beers on the chalkboard, not even whether they were bottles or draught. Worst food experience in a long time. Never eat here.

Armadillos(Dillos) is the perfect spot to bring a friend or a son!!! I first visited this spot the night before Thanksgiving, and had a super-fun time! It began with great tacos and ended with a great dart game. The employees are loyal and accommodating. They provide, along with the ambience, an atmosphere of home and comfort. I highly recommend the Chicken Taco, for the smaller tummies, and the Steak Burrito, for the needs of the more grown-ups. The Condiments are amazing! Visit often and try it all!

I love the nachos here and the staff is always nice and helpful. Screw the bad reviews I haven’t had anything that wasn’t tasty.

$ 30 for 6 tacos??? Just go to Lime or Captain Ponchos both 5 minutes away. Ridiculous that they charge you for«extras» like tomatoes or cheese.

Fresh food, on the spicy side. If I were rich, I’d eat here everyday. Staff members are super nice too!

I would think it would be difficult to mess up your order when you circle and check the items that you want. Poor assumption on my part. Prices were very high for the amount of foo, especially given the fact that it had very little flavor. Not impressed and will not be returning.

Train your cooks to make the 4 basic items of tex-mex, for cryin’ out loud. I got a burrito to go, took it home and unwrapped foil to find a whole in the tortilla gushing my filling(which was so cold the cheese didn’t even melt) and the tortilla unwrapping itself. If I wanted to eat a burrito with a fork and a knife, I would have just gone to Chipotle.

I usually award lots of stars for quick service… but not when they mess up the order. Armadillo’s method of filling out a form in lieu of ordering orally seems novel and hip, but in reality, the lack of verbal communication just greatens the chance that they’ll misunderstand what you really want. My boyfriend got the dillo deal, which is supposed to come with an entrée + beans, rice, and chips. I ordered black beans, rice, chips, and guac à la carte with the idea of combining them myself as DIY vegetarian nachos. They only gave us one order of beans and rice. This might not seem like a big deal, but it really cut back on the total amount of food, especially because of its price. The food itself was eh — well-seasoned rice, but brown guac, bland chips, and I wish the cheese on the black beans was queso fresco or something(not cheddar). Well-seasoned rice and good array of salsas, though! This is such a good location; they should step it up and match the quality of the surrounding restaurants.

Armadillo’s is a definite fun place for a quick and affordable bite to eat… They definitely have some great dishes and their customer service is pretty good… You order at the counter and you can see the food fixed for you… On the time I went, one of the servers appeared to have a slight cold… so this may have colored my few somewhat and may be the reason I can’t bring myself to bring it to a four… but the food was good…

I don’t understand why Armadillo is getting bad reviews — I think it’s because most people don’t know what they should be ordering. The wings(yes, hot wings) are amazing! The regular ground beef taco is also delicious. And please sit upstairs and order a margarita — they use fresh squeezed citrus so the margaritas don’t have any ridiculous sour mix in them.

Meh. It’s fine. It’s not bad or anything, and it’s fairly cheap, especially given that you usually don’t see many undergrad-aged folks this far west of Franklin St. There are two floors, the bottom is like your usual Chipotle-style burrito place, except instead of ordering your food and toppings in front of you, you order it on a pad of paper and give it to the cashier. They seem to recognizer the waste of paper at Armadillo Grill, and recommend you«save paper by telling your order to your server,» which makes me wonder why have the pads of paper at all. The upper floor is kind of like a sports bar, with a full bar and several television screens. I have been living in the area for nearly two years now, hunting for good sports bars nearby in Carrboro, and I didn’t know about this. Perhaps Armadillo needs to advertise it more. The food ain’t bad, and I would argue that it rivals Carrburritos in several aspects.(Carrburritos is rather bland if you have been to a good, West-Coast taqueria). The food here is also bland-ish, but not bad. I had the veggie soft taco, which was full of tomatoes and iceberg lettuce(same as regular tacos but no meat) but the bean burrito was pretty awesome. The chips and queso weren’t special, but they were cheap and very good. There is tons of seating in Armadillo Grill, inside and out. I don’t know that I’ll be clamoring to go here again and again, but I am glad to know it’s here. Finally!

I like the concept here with having the menus posted and ordering at the counter. It moves quickly and the food comes out pretty fast. I just wish I could say I love the food here and can’t wait to come back, but honestly, even though it relatively affordable, I found it to be quite greasy. If that’s what you’re after, then great, but for me it was indigestion city!

It was alright. There is definitely better fast-food type mexican food out there. Myself and a few friends were visiting after a conference at UNC. We tried 3 nearby restaurants who were only serving brunch(we wanted more lunch options). We were very hungry at this point and just said, «Whatever, let’s just go to Armadillo Grill.» I ordered the chicken enchiladas and guacamole. Guacamole was better than expected. Enchiladas were edible, but nothing special. Unless you’re desperate, there are better options within walking distance. I was sort of expecting an independently-owned, unique type of place. But this is just a «meh» fast-food mexican restaurant.
