Wow! I second this review(from 2013): «Honest people, new to the area. I totally missed the signs(re activity on the dock)…The guy that worked their was a total D-bag.» Same thing happened to me! I was on the dock doing yoga. A spiritual practice. Barely a soul in sight. «D-bag» came out very rudely and had me «trespassed» by the police(who, at least, were nice.) I explained I was new to the area…(besides, really, yoga?) I think the guy was upset because I mentioned the dog«blood research lab»(yes, an animal research biomedical lab with kenneled dogs) on the shores of the lake, just left of the entrance. Beautiful setting… but«yes» to animal labs, «no» to yoga? says something. Not sure what. But something… just doesn’t feel right.

Be polite to the guys working there and they’ll be as nice and as helpful and kind as can be. Nice place to fish, canoe, row…

Honest people, new to the area, and completely respectful. I totally missed the signs that you must register to fish off the dock. Guess we were a little too excited, it was our first trip in years. The guy that worked there was a total D-bag. While he did allow us to stay after making us feel like criminals and berating us, I felt too uncomfortable to continue the trip or ever return. Worst fishing trip ever!

Really beautiful, easily-accessible lake that’s not too big and not too small. Not sure how much boat rentals cost(half-day limit, I think), but there is an $ 18 fee and mandatory inspection if you bring your own(no time limit). Some restrictions worth noting: No swimming – you must stay in your water vessel at all times No pets No alcohol Also important: the bathrooms at the parking lot/office are clean and fully stocked with TP and soap!

This peaceful oasis is a quick drive from busy Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Whether you’re looking for a spot to relax with a good book and sunbathe, or a great fishing hole for cheap, University Lake is a super, local option. The lake’s actual grassy space is limited, but it stays pretty empty, making it easy to find a secluded spot. The strength of this park is in its on-the-water fun. There is more than sufficient supply of john-boats and canoes for an afternoon of fun or fishing on the water. There is a small fee associated with boat rentals, but it’s insignificant. Once you’re on the water you’ll enjoy a great fish supply, and a lake large enough to find your own nook, but small enough to make every end accessible. Best of all, the entire lake is surrounded by trees making this nearby getaway feel miles away from the daily grind.
