I love this place. It’s the hardware store for geeks. You can wander around in here looking at parts and gadgets for an hour more than you intended. Staff is very helpful and knowledgable, not some half-wit who can’t even spell«PC» let alone help you with the right part. I’m told if you need a cable and it doesn’t exist, they can create it for you, but I’ve never tried that. This is my go-to store for all hardware that I need to see before I buy.

So — how random or esoteric of a technology need do you have? As a professional geek, I sometimes wind up having really specific needs when I haven’t planned for absolutely everything, and the timing can’t always wait for UPS Priority Overnight. Finding myself in Dallas in desperate need of 23-meter OM3 or OM4 fiber optic cables with LC-LC tips, I managed to stump every place I rang. Thankfully, TigerDirect gave me the name of Altex, and a quick call over here confirmed that they had the cable type I needed, although much longer than I really wanted and for an exorbitant price. Still, they had it in stock and were willing to put 2 away for me until I showed up, so they saved the day. They may not be my first choice, but when my back is against the wall I do expect Altex can and will deliver.

I always buy my electronic parts from Altex; cables, LEDs, electronics cooling fans, heat sinks, super cold sprays, etc. Prices are reasonable for a retail store and they have very knowledgeable help there, all you have to do is ask. This place is what Radio Shack used to be like before they fired all the knowledgeable staff and replaced them with pimply faced minimum wage slaves mandated by corporate headquarters.

Oldschool and more expensive than elsewhere, but there is more of a focus on the customer not sales.

Been shopping here for over fifteen years. No one will help you as your browsing the aisles. You have to go and seek the help. You will get straight answers from the creepy guys that run the store. Still, this place is super cheap. I have bought numerous network cables, conduits, and electrical tape. I don’t think I’ll ever buy a computer or monitor from here. Places like Newegg and Amazon are cheaper and more selection. However, if you’re looking for somewhere local, this is your GOTO spot for Addison/Carrollton/N. Dallas. Love it!

Frequent purchaser from Altex. Their location is a bit out of the way, but the inventory is full of hard to find items. Need something computer wise thats hard to find? Go here and you’re sure to find it. And their local invoicing system makes picking up supplies REALLY convenient.

Great place to buy cables, much cheaper than any other electronics store. The only downside to Altex is that they waste allot of room with computer gear which is WAY overpriced and has often sat there so long that is become out of date. Forget about going to Altex for computer gear, but if your looking for a cable or any small electronic part, this and Tanner Electronics off of I-35 in Carrollton are the places to go.

Altex is the place to go for Home Theater — Media Cables. Don’t get swindled into buying Monster Cables at your local Best Buy, etc. You will be able to save tons of $$$ and get high quality cables at Altex. If you live here in Dallas it is just northwest of the Addison Airport(kinda behind Sonic). This is where I buy all my Component, Fiber Optic(TosLink) and HDMI cables. Been going there for 3 yrs now and never had a bad cable. SPREADTHEWORD
