Toothacres Pet Care Center

Every time I board my three senior dogs I am continually pleased. Today I picked them up after a 7 day stay and found my Leroy happily barking outside in the indoor/​outdoor run. My Chihuahua, Gracie, was snuggled on a cot with her blanket, and my 15-​year-​old Bichon, Niles, was in his comfy bed and a kennel worker had tucked him in with a fleece blanket on top. Boarding for so long was hard for me, but seeing how comfy they were when we returned helped so much. Toothacres is not fancy, but it is very clean and very well run by the family who has owned it for decades and the very caring staff.

Wow! Finally a place that is priced reasonably and felt comfortable leaving my dog. I am tired of paying 30 $+ for a night. Im from a small town in ohio and normally pay 20 $/​night. I’ve tried other boarding places and just haven’t been to impressed with the service or the staff.
I really liked that it is a family business, and that the family lives on the property. Also, that it was a large property and seemed very secure and away from the road. Felt very peaceful and quaint back there!
I called ahead and made a reservation and was able to drop off my dog the same day. I REALLY liked that I could walk my dog back to her kennel and could see exactly where she would be. That just gave me a peace-​of-​mind.
When I went to pick her up, I also walked back with the staff member and was allowed to put her leash on and everything. She was just laying there and was so happy to see me. I really liked that. It was the first place I was able to do that. She is a very timid dog around strangers so it was so perfect that they allow the owners back in the kennels.
They also followed my feeding instructions perfectly because I purposely put extra food in the bag and measured it out so I would know if they followed them properly or not (the place I boarded her the weekend before did not follow my instructions). So I was very happy about that!
She wasn’t smelly like she gets from other places, and she didn’t seem sick or anything like when she comes home from other places.
I will defiantly take her back here!!!

I am not impressed. The staff failed to follow simple instructions regarding my dogs. We brought our own dog beds to avoid the risk of having to pay needlessly excessive charges for damage in case one of the dogs chewed up the kennel provided bed (nothing but a cheap, vinyl/​plastic covered mattress). I gave instructions to leave the beds in the kennel throughout the day as one of our dogs likes to sleep a lot. When I picked the dogs up, the beds were outside sitting on top of the kennel. I’m assuming they took them out during the day and put them back in at night, but regardless, I specifically instructed them to leave the beds in the kennel all day.
Even more concerning was the total disregard of my specific feeding instructions. I brought my own food since one of our dogs has a special diet due to skin issues. I precisely measured out the food in separate containers and included enough extra food for two extra days (just in case). We actually ended up returning one day early from our trip, but I found that ALL the food had been used up. They overfed the dogs, giving them SIX days worth of food in just THREE days. Further, the food had just been dumped in the bowls and not measured out AT ALL. Because of this, there was food spilled all over the kennel, and the dog with skin issues ended up eating our other dog’s food since it was all just dumped together in the kennel. To make it worse, the one of our two dogs that needed the special diet has had diarrhea ever since she came home.
Also, I don’t know if they ever cleaned out the kennel. Both dogs came home smelling like feces, and the smaller dog (longer hair) had it matted all through the hair. Not only did we have to give both dogs baths after getting them home, we also had to wipe out the car from all the fecal matter in the dogs fur. I understand that dogs aren’t clean animals, but I also understand that the staff told me that they sprayed out the kennels daily to remove waste.
I am very disappointed and upset. I chose this place after reading good reviews on Unilocal and other sites, but my experience could not have been more different. I cannot recommend this kennel to anyone.
Edit to add: Our second dog also had diarrhea as well, we just didn’t notice that until after I wrote the review. It took four days for them both to get over it. We ended up having to withhold all food for one day and then feed them plain boiled chicken and rice in small quantities until they stopped their issues, then gradually wean them back onto their normal food over the following week.
I have since scheduled stays at another kennel and, oddly enough, one of the workers at the new kennel said he used to work at toothacres and the issues I described were standard practice. They would charge for extra things like yard time, but never actually let the dogs out. They would just dump all the food in the kennels and disregard owner instructions, and they would not clean out the kennels as often as they claimed. They may seem friendly and all polished when you show up for your appointment, but beware of the neglect that goes on after you leave your pets. If you are considering boarding your pets here, it might be best to drop in unannounced beforehand to survey the facilities to see the actual condition of the animals already there.

Being the owner of 3 dogs, one of which is not too fond of most other dogs, it was hard to find a place that would take all 3 and allow them to be housed in kennels next to each other. When we arrived i was quite nervous about how my pups would react. The staff met us at the car and made us feel very welcome and calmed my fears. They allowed us to take our time and get them used to their surroundings. We received an email each day we were away with pictures of all three. Highly recommend here for your boarding needs.

Well, I was a little skeptical about this place. I know it’s been around since 1849… seriously. But Hemingway is my *baby*, MY BABY. They keep the dogs in kennel runs. Nothing what Hemingway is accustomed to. I was so worried that when I dropped him off, I actually cried.
Then, it hit me. Um, Hemingway is a dog. Not a real baby. The staff at Toothacres are meticulous and clean the runs, feed your dog to your specifications and even offer some perks for the dogs (time to run in the large areas, treats (or you can bring your own treats), they even offer web cams in some of the suites.
Overall, a great place to board your doggie. They are not a daycare, nor do the mix the dogs together.
