Ummm sorry Miki M. That is not smoke. It is STEAM. Get your facts straight. You go to any refinery in the south coast, they will not and can not by law blow smoke like that. You think the thousands of people who work in the refinieries want to emit smoke like they don’t care about their health? The government agencies have laws against smoke by the way so anyone who is sending that much of «what you think is smoke» into the atmosphere will be heavily fined and shut down.

Many reviwers hate this place and to a point I understand that it is a beast of sorts, but lets not point our fingers and say shame on you for doing what you were born to do. They uses oil to make gas and a few hundred other products. The phone or computer screen you are reading this on is made of plastic, a byproduct of oil. Now in the process they make a profit. How dare they? Get real, almost everyone works for pay its the bedrock of our economy. This refinery gives back to there neighbors and local community not to mention the billions they pay in taxes to the country of LA. Could they do better? I think so, will they who knows? I do know one thing for sure without this refinery the price of gas would double everywhere from Texas to California up to the border of Canada. And no one wants that, life is to expensive already. If refinerys really annoy you don’t complain find a better and self regenerating energy source. Then you will change the world and I will Unilocal your praises to the highest mountains.

Miki is completely wrong. Peter is right on regarding true polluters. Maybe you should walk or ride a bike before you wrongly accuse some one else for polluting this world. I am sure you also don’t use any plastics or anyother nonrecyclable materials either.

Actually Miki, quite the contrary. The worst polluters are the automobiles themselves. This refinery is actually the cleanest and most environmentally friendly in the LA area. If you don’t believe me, go look at some actual air quality data at instead of falsely stating that you can«see» the pollution. What you are seeing is water vapor, and in fact, that water vapor is more pure than LA tapwater. While in general BP has had some safety issues, I have been interfacing with refineries in the LA basin for awhile and this is by far my favorite place to work, despite being BP-owned. I’ve never felt safer at my job.

A major polluter in the area. Feel free to give them a call and ask them what are they doing to minimize pollution in the area… see pix.
