It kind of felt like I had arrived at an old roadhouse as I entered Samson’s. Staff initially looked at me as if to say, «You’re not one of our regulars, why are you standing there looking around?» They then smiled and said«have a seat anywhere.» I mentioned that I was waiting for a friend to join me, and they said«pull up a seat at the bar and have a drink while you wait.» Instead, I continued to roam around and realized that for lunch time, there was almost a fully occupied U-shaped bar, plenty of TVs, lottery and Quick Draw cards, some arcade games in various corners of the place, an enclosed dining area on what was possibly an open front porch years back, and an inner, small dining area separated from the bar by what I later experienced to be clean restrooms. Upon my friend’s arrival, we decided that soup was in order on such a cool and damp Spring afternoon. But first we inquired as to what was on tap. Our friendly server mentioned at least a half dozen choices ranging from the ubiquitous Bud and Bud Light, on to a Sam seasonal, and eventually to our mutual choice, Chatham Spike Devil Porter($ 5/pint; $ 3.75÷8 oz.). I had been told that the house-made soups were good, and they were offering three on this day. We decided to try two of them($ 2.50/cup). Mine was the Chipotle Turkey Rice and my friend had the Potato Bacon. Both were hot and tasty, mine had a good amount of turkey chunks, but I’m not sure I noticed much chipotle flavor or spicing. My Meatball Sub($ 6.99) served on a hoagie roll, had three large meatballs, a somewhat chunky tomato sauce, and melted mozzarella. It came with fries, and the sandwich seemed very hefty as I lifted it up. Eating just half of it along with the fries was more than enough to fill me up after the soup. I would have liked there to have been more flavor to the meatballs, however. My friend said his Sausage, Pepper & Onion Sub($ 6.99), which came with melted mozzarella, also seemed like it was missing something. He tried adding some catsup and commented that it helped. He did, however, enjoy the flavor of the sausage. The service was both friendly and efficient.

Good restaurants offer great food at a reasonable price and healthy portions. Great restaurants do the same, but know who they are… Samson’s is a great family restaurant that knows who they are. Visited there last night w/fiancé and two boys. The teenagers plowed through a half rack of ribs and amazingly… were full! Fiancé had the house salad and I went with the house special — meatloaf. Gotta’ say the meatloaf was dull, over fatty and not cooked properly. Why do I still love this family jewel of a restaurant? Everyone is friendly, the price is reasonable, the service is friendly and sweet and the Chatham Ale on tap is really REALLY good. Go to Samson’s. you won’t be disappointed. Oh yea, have the nachos as an appetizer — really good too.

As you walk in you feel like home. A warm comfortable, local hang out with good entrée specials and incredible soup. Usually there is 3 different soup options available daily for $ 3.99 a bowl. The creamy reuben soup is one of those delicious specialties. Today they had a pot roast entrée special for $ 6.75(open face on white bread) with gravy, mashed potatoes(homemade) and canned green beans with garlic and butter. I’ve been here numerous times and you can’t miss by ordering the soup. Some of the other entrees on the menu are good but lack flavor/herbs such as the chicken parmesan. The prices are good and they have usually good beer on tap if your looking for that. The service is fast and you get a well rounded meal without breaking the bank.

Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday just before football started. We wanted a quick bite before house hunting in the area. I had the grilled chicken sandwich with fries. Grilled chicken sandwiches are usually very boring, and sometimes dry, but it sounded good so I gave it a try. The chicken was pounded fairly thin, and therefore eliminated the usual problem of an underseasoned dry chicken breast on a roll. The steak fries weren’t life changning but they were fresh and salty and tasted great. My husband had the Southwest Chicken soup and enjoyed it. His turkey melt sandwich was great. All in all we picked pretty simple food, but it tasted great, and that’s a good sign. Our bill was pretty cheap. Two sandwiches, french fries, soup, a beer, and an iced tea came to $ 23.00 without tip. We sat at the bar so the service was great, can’t comment on the servers at the tables. Seems like a good place to watch football on a Sunday as well. If we find ourselves back in town for more house hunting, we’ll stop in again.

We must have driven by this place thousands of times but just never stopped. We heard some good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We are very happy we did and have been here several times now. Having Celiac, it’s challenging to dine out. I have to say I’m rather impressed with Samson’s. I explained I was gluten free and ordered a burger(no bun) and please sub potato salad for the french fries. Usually it’s met with a blank stare but the person who took the order said«wow, you’re REALLY gluten free huh» — meaning she understood that I couldn’t have french fries because they are fried in the same oil as breaded items. When the meal was delivered they made sure to tell me they made sure it didn’t come in contact with anything else in the kitchen. As a side note — they also have gluten free wraps available. The meal was fantastic. I had the lunch special of mushroom swiss burger and it was soooo good. It was cooked perfectly and their(house made) potato salad was delicious too. All for $ 6.50? Yes please! Hubby also had a burger and he had fries. His burger was also cooked perfectly and he said his meal was great. They also have a pretty good tap so the beer selection is good. It’s not the fanciest restaurant, but they offer good service and down home cooking at reasonable prices. We will definitely be back!

A nice respectable country bar with dining room and bar tables. The food is good. It’s no better, but no worse. Kinda like Uncle Charlies in my home town a long time ago. Good burgers, good beer, decent selection, but skewed towards the heavy beer drinking crowd. Mostly light colored beers. Yeah, they have Blue Moon and some locals, but it’s not a beer hall. The waitresses are friendly, but there’s always a wait in waitress. I can’t exactly wrap my head around liking Samson’s, but I go back.

What strikes me the most about this restaurant is how friendly and accommodating the waitstaff is. I had a hankering tonight for a buffalo chicken sandwich, but didn’t see one on the menu. However, I did see that via other menu items that they had all the ingredients for one, so I asked the waitress if it was possible to get one. She said no problem and it was hands down the best buffalo chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. Breaded chicken with bleu cheese crumbles on a hard roll with mild sauce. De-lish! My husband ordered what he always gets(also not on the menu), which is a Grilled Simon that they sometimes have on special. It’s a turkey melt with bacon and cheese grilled on the outside of the bread. Also awesome. And another weirdly awesome thing happened tonight… as we were leaving a party of about 12 people came in. I later found out they come there every Monday night after guitar practice. Well they started playing some really lovely folk music. What other restaurant would allow that to happen? Not many that I know of. Like I said, everyone there is extremely accommodating and friendly. So good food, good prices and a friendly atmosphere. Can’t go wrong. Support your local business and have dinner as Samson’s in Castleton. You won’t be sorry.

OK. Any place that actually has the respect for beer to offer Red Hooks, Long hammer IPA on tap will get my patronage forever. This place is awesome just for that. It takes allot to get a good Unilocal rating from me and honestly I would give this place 5 stars if it was not for one thing. The buffalo sauce for their chicken wings is so inconsistent. Sometimes its great and sometimes it tastes like spicy ketchupy bbq sauce. Which would be fine if I wanted that but I want spicy buffalo wings not spicy bbq wings. They cook their wings absolutely perfect, nice an crispy! But then sometimes they ruin them with that ketchopy bbq sauce just like the restaurant down the road called MYPLACE.(which the owner came from) They do the same darn thing. I live in the area and many of the people that go here say the same thing. Even one of the waitresses agreed with me one of the times I had gone there. By the way the two that are there now are great! So nice and very attentive.

The definition of consistency! At Samson’s you always get a great meal at a great price. We’ve eaten pretty much everything on the menu & it’s all good. I have to start by mentioning their numerous soups, they’re prepared from scratch everyday, absolutely loaded with fresh ingredients & never disappoint. The Chicken Wings are excellent & I particularly enjoy their Tuna Melt. Nice portions & great prices. I’ve literally eaten here about 100X over the past 12 months & am truly impressed by the quality of the food the kitchen turns out on a constant basis. Be sure to save room for the Carrot Cake!

I should have known when I called from the highway for directions and the person answering the phone(and was actually the person who greeted us at the door and was our server) was super nice to me, it would be a fantastic experience! 5 stars for great food, service, entertainment(playing New York lottery machine was fun while we waited for our food). Chicken Parmesan $ 8.99 and better than any uppidty pricey place! Chicken seemed to be coated in Panko bread crumbs and lightly fried — very crispy on the outside with juicy white meat inside, just perfect! And once we got our marinara for our mozzarella sticks — I knew I had made the right decision in ordering the chicken parmesan for my entrée! This marinara was amazing(the mozzarella sticks actually came with a raspberry sauce which sounds funky but really grew on you but we asked for a traditional marinara as well), Samson’s chicken parmesan over pasta beyond plentiful and comes with garden salad. I enjoy balsamic with any salad and it was good. A Philadelphia Cheese Steak for my husband that was better than ANY cheesesteak from Philly or any where else. The steak melted in your mouth! Also a reuben, I didn’t even get to try this but my son loved it! I would not only recommend Samson’s but cannot wait to drive out of my way home from Vermont to experience this again and again!

Great family neighbor restaurant! It has a small dining room with an enclosed front porch you can eat in too. Also three small rooms with a table for two if you want your privacy. Also fresh flowers on the tables. Our friend who use to live in the area suggested the place. He said years ago it was a bar and grill. Our friend had the $ 1.00 hamburger(two) with steak fries. His wife had fish with fries, my husband had a cup of Manhattan seafood soup with a hot roast beef sandwich and fresh vegetables. I had a meatball sandwich with fries. Everything was cooked well and very good! We will be coming back for sure. On our way to the car we noticed a side patio which looked like it would have tables in the summer, can’t wait to see. Highly recommend this place!

My wife and I started going here over a year ago. The place has a nice homestyle feel. Everyone there is friendly and if you go there enough times you’re like part of the family. The food is delicious. Check the daily specials board right when you walk in. They usually have two soup offerings and one or two main courses. These may change as the offerings run out. Try any of the soups… even the ones that sound weird like Pizza Supreme Soup or Cheeseburger Soup. We decided to brave the name and try them and they were amazingly delicious. On the appetizers we’ve had the wings, the quesedillas and the nachos. We usually ask for our wings GRILLED because they had a special on them once and we just like the way they are prepared and taste better. The quesedillas were good. The nachos were a surprise. You get this plate filled with enough food to feed an football team. You may need to ask for more salsa and sour cream though. There’s just too much food there. For dinner my wife can’t steer herself away from the chicken parmigian. She’ll order it fried or grilled depending how she feels. This comes with a small salad. For dressings we usually pick the HOMEMADE Ranch Dressing or the Wasabi Cucumber. The Ranch dressing is freshly made and the best you’ll ever taste. I always get some to dunk my fries into. My choice usually is the cheesesteak sandwich without peppers. It’s the best cheesesteak I’ve tasted in the area.(NOTE: I only moved here about 3 yrs ago.) I’ve also had the roast beef and the meat loaf and they were both delicious as well. They have two offerings for desert: Chocolate Cream Pie and Carrot Cake. Both are homemade. I’ve tasted both and can recommend both. Despite the fact that Chocolate Cream pie is merely chocolate pudding in a pie shell with whipped cream, that is what I usually get for desert. The chocolate pudding is not the instant kind, it’s the kind that you have to cook on the stove. That adds such a flavorful dimension to the pudding that brings me back to when my mom used to make pudding for us as kids. Samson’s is a friendly, comfortable restaurant with great food and even better prices.
