Rudy’s Donut House

Their parking lot is tiny; especially when it is in the morning and you have the regulars sipping their coffee and chowing down on their fresh donuts. But trust me. Their donuts are delicious! Just park and walk if needed.
Make sure you go early if you want to ensure you get what you’re hoping for. My go to is always the sugar donut. Super fluffy, not greasy and oh so fresh

Customer service is bad here. I was the only customer in the store and I was getting rushed to pick my doughnut selections. Friendliness is not available here. I wish there was better selection at 11 am on a weekend.
My wife asked me to get doughnuts. I was looking for anything similar to the doughnuts she wanted, because the selection was poor. Could they make extra of the popular doughnuts?

Wow. Did I go to the wrong place? The reviews are so stellar (pun intended). I was getting a Greek salad (v. good) at Villa Roma, and decided to try a donut next door. It was around 11 am. The selection was paltry. Paltry. Who knew that donuts are available at Rudy’s only much earlier?! But what was remarkable was the service. I swear the older woman who helped me was not letting go of a smile that day. Maybe she made the donuts extra sweet that day and decided that there was already enough sweetness in the shop so she could be sour. She also seemed unaware that customers might come in and ask for donuts. I felt like I was asking her to take a bag of garbage off my hands so severe was her attitude. The donuts were ok.

Just stopped in to pick up 4 dozen donuts for my son’s class party. They were so sweet and kind. They set us up with all that we needed. We love Rudy’s and go often after church! Great place and they are always smiling… thank you!

Cute and cozy small time donut house. I came in here at 9AM, and tons of regulars, just hanging out. Tons of old gentlemen just enjoying retirement. No where else to be, but enjoying their morning coffee and donuts with their fellow pals. It’s cute!
I loved how everyone knew everyone. Service greeted each customer by name, and knew exactly what they wanted. It’s pretty cool.

Excellent donuts! They’re really soft and very obviously freshly made. The apple fritter was full of apple pieces that were very nice. The crumb bread donut was also excellent. They weren’t very oily compared to other donuts I’ve had, especially compared with another donut place that’s closeby (see my other reviews). I’m definitely coming back to Rudy’s whenever I’m in the east bay.
I also met Rudy’s daughter. She’s a very sweet lady who provides excellent customer services and makes everyone feel welcome.

I love this place! My son and I come every Friday. The donuts are all so delicious. I’m so glad my son and I have this tradition to look forward to. The staff is very nice and I lurves their apple fritters! The best ever!

I love Rudy’s because it has lots of choices of donuts! It also is great for coffee and drinks. The people who work there are very nice and sometimes will have a little talk with you. Wonderful berry donuts. Very tasty! I promised myself I would only have half — it was hard! Delicious!

The employees are super nice and attentive. At 1030am there were still a good variety of donuts including the sprinkled kind my son loves so much! All the guests were friendly and smiling as well. The donut holes were delicious! Overall it was a great atmosphere and experience!

Their donuts are the best. I had two a glazed & cinnamon roll. They were perfext! They were nice & fluffy and not greasy at all. My mom had ordered 2 dozen for her coworkers & they all complimented on how fresh and good they were. Overall, I would highly recommend coming here for their amazing donuts.

Decided to take the kids on a Sunday morning, after hearing good reviews from friends.
Very disappointing, @ 9:00 am there wasn’t much of a selection. Trying to look over what was left, we had to decide quickly because the line MOVES. So I ordered a sprinkle & glazed for the kids, and then a chocolate old fashioned w/​nuts for myself.
I couldn’t wait to get home to eat this donut, so I pinched a piece off while driving. In disbelief I ate another pinch. It just tasted as if it were yesterday’s leftover donut, not to mention DRY!
Huge let down, because I really wanted to like this place. Maybe this was an off day, or I should’ve gotten there way earlier. I unfortunately won’t be back to find out.

Good donut joint and excellent, friendly service.
I got a raised glazed, a raspberry filled jelly, and a chocolate covered old fashioned. Both raised were light and airy, though the raspberry could have had more jelly filling (ding, 1 star). The old fashioned was spot on – chocolatey frosting, tender, moist, not too crumbly.
The lady behind the counter was friendly and communicated with a smile and a good morning.

Maybe it’s because I live on the East Coast where Dunkin Donuts has taken over the donut industry like the black plague in medieval Europe, but THIS is what a donut shop is supposed to be like! Pastries of all shapes and sizes in a glass case, the smell of coffee in the air, those round bottles of Martinelli’s apple juice that go PERFECTLY with an apple fritter (more on that later).
I used to ride my bike across town when I was a kid with my dad to get Rudy’s donuts on a weekend. I was happy to see this tradition continue 15 years later when I was back visiting family, stopped by to pick up donuts for the family on a Saturday, and saw that Rudy’s was packed with families enjoying their weekend donut trip. Hopefully they’ll return 15 years later.

This place is definitely another Castro Valley icon, having been around as long as I can remember! Growing up I remember how it was a special treat to come to Rudy’s in the morning to get a donut or two! Those memories in mind, I brought my wife here on a Saturday morning after not visiting for years. The place still looked the same and it was probably the same crowd still sitting around chatting after all these years. It seems like people really enjoy coming here to have their morning coffee and donut over conversation.
We ordered a glazed donut, a chocolate bar, and a blueberry donut. The glazed and chocolate bar were decent. I liked that they didn’t have the filmy Crisco aftertaste that some donuts have but they weren’t as soft or fluffy as we like our raised donuts to be. The donuts were big, however! The blueberry cake donut was actually very tasty, that was the favorite one for my wife and I.
Hopefully I just came here on an off day for the raised donuts as this is a Castro Valley landmark that I enjoyed so much growing up and I hope it’s around for a long time!

I Unilocaled this donut shop since I was in the area and wanted to see if the donuts lived up to all the good reviews.
I ordered a chocolate bar and a small coffee from the very friendly lady at the counter. The lady asked me if the small 8 ounce coffee was too small and if I preferred the 12 ounce cup instead. Thanks for asking, but sometimes I want a small cup of joe and this hit the spot for me today.
The chocolate bar was a little chunky looking and heavily coated with chocolate. The donut had a nice texture, not too soft and not too sweet. The chocolate was chocolatey and not overly sweet. I really enjoyed my donut and wished that I ordered two or three smaller donuts so I can taste the different varieties.
I am going to have to come back again and sample more of these donuts!

Hi. My name is Suzy D., and I am a donut-​holic.
When it comes to Rudy’s I’ve got a serious issue about not being able to moderate my consumption. They just taste sooo good! Not greasy, not stale, plenty of variety and great service. I love that a couple of the ladies that work here are the same ladies (Rudy’s daughters I think?) I’ve seen since elementary school. And still as sweet as can be!
Though Rudy’s may not be one of those donut places that is open in the middle of the night, the quality makes up for lack of hours. That being said, it’s disappointing (read: healthy for me since I’m an addict) when I come back to CV for holidays and they’re closed for an entire holiday weekend. Sad face. But, Rudy’s has become famous where ever I’ve been. These donuts have traveled the world via carry on, and friends request their favorites when they know I’m headed home or when family is planning a visit.
As for the actual donuts, gosh, where to begin. They’re all good, I promise, but here are the ones not to miss:
–Raised crumb (looks kinda nasty, tastes like heaven, if heaven had a hole in the center)
–Glazed buttermilk bar
–Chocolate old fashioned
–Cinnamon roll
The cherry on top of this donut sundae is the charm the clientele brings. Early in the morning old guys meet to reminisce and swap old war stories. They look like they are always having a great time, and who wouldn’t be with coffee and donuts at their side? Someday, when I’m old and retired, I’ll be one of those guys/​gals.
