Hy-Vee Food Stores

The «ghetto Hy-​Vee» serves the diverse neighborhood where it’s located but also many downtown workers such as myself. They have a very good deli and Chinese Express department where you’ll find a $ 5 lunch special everyday. I often get the the Chinese one entrée meal with rice and appetizer. On Fridays you can get a two entrée Chinese lunch for $ 5 — they give you the same amount of food but more variety. Sure they get their share of seedy people but it’s no worse than your average Walmart. Don’t let it stop you from a cheap lunch or picking up a few groceries on your way home.

This is an urban HyVee in a neighborhood with a lot of crime. There are a lot of bums, crackheads, drug dealers, etc. in this area. Thankfully, HyVee tries hard to keep the property safe, even having a police officer on hand most of the time.
That being said, I do like coming in here and hanging out with good friends. We dine at the deli and like the employees who work here. The staff makes the difference. Their «helpful smiles» help keep regulars coming back.
While this HyVee is smaller in size and has fewer items than most, I do like shopping here. They make awesome sub sandwiches. The deli has delicious tenderloins and fried chicken — don’t hesitate to ask for them to make either of those fresh.
Management acts quickly if there is a panhandler or other incident. Just use good judgment and be aware of the area.

The last guy said almost everything except that being that this HyVee is in «the hood» you have a lot of theft and shenanigans going on. That is the main reason this store is not open 24 hours. It is basically a community service on HyVee’s part. I don’t blame them so much, I’m sure they wish they could close this store. But they probably are told they can’t close this store, due to race issues. But either way, if you want to avoid being panhandled, lipped off to, stabbed or shot, you would be wise to drive a little further to another HyVee. The rest of the HyVee’s in town have nowhere near the problems.
