DeKalb County Library – Chamblee Branch

The selection is pretty much average, so you can expect to find popular books. One bonus is that they have a ton of computers in here, so if you need the internet you’re good to go. They also have a nice sized Children’s Section which is isolated from the rest of the books. Not a bad place to relax and read for a bit.
Recently I went in and couldn’t find a book on the shelf that they said was checked in. I looked for 2 or 3 minutes without success and then the librarian went over and found it in about 0.02 seconds. It’s great when you have helpful librarians instead of having to comb through endless rows of books… unless that’s your thing!

The women who work here are so rude it borders on funny. Upon walking in with my Starbucks cup, ready for a good read. a woman barks «You can’t come in here with that». Okay okay. Not the end of the world lady. So I go and put it in my car. When I return, I let her know I lost my card and need a new one. I am given the 9^th degree like I am trying to infiltrate some super High profile govt. project. «Where do you live?» «When did you lose it?» «Do you still live here?» «Are you sure?» Yes lady, I am sure I still live here. All the while she is squinting at me like I am lying. UGH.
So I’m in now, and I feel like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. Surely, there must be something splendid behind these walls and upon these shelves right? Wrong. My computer search (And by computer, I mean those things you used to play Oregon trail on in the 80’s) rendered nothing available for the Medieval era. I found maybe one title that sounded interesting, and it was missing from the shelf. So I approach the desk to see if maybe it just hasn’t been shelved yet.
Lady #2, I’ll call her smiley, a sort of homage to her lack of any joy or friendliness. Smiley looks at me like I am insane for asking if perhaps someone turned in the book. «No.» she says, without looking. Ooookay. «Thanks so much» I say. Smiley just stares me down.
I return to the computer and look for books on marriage. Not much there. It seems that any good books available, are only available in 1 copy and are always checked out. Now I know this is not their fault, but more-​so a lack of some much needed funding, and I hope they get it. However, I am here to inform you that if you are coming here to do research, you will be better off in another library. If you are coming here to sit in a chair with a book you already own or a magazine from last summer, then this is the place for you. Tell smiley I said hi.
Tip: Look on the little desk before you walk in to see flyers for jobs, and happenings around town.

They have a nice selection, plenty of computers to use for surfing and it is pretty easy to reserve your books, dvd’s, cd’s and audio books online!
The staff members are always helpful and friendly so I appreciate that. They seem very happy to be there.
Plus, who doesn’t appreciate that you can check out a good book for free!
