First off, it doesn’t cost anything so by definition it’s a good economic value. I stopped in here for 15 minutes while my wife and son were playing at the Children’s museum across the way. As a train aficionado it was a fantastic place to visit and see a replica of the first steam locomotive built entirely in the USAND the first to offer regular passenger service. It’s beautifully painted and fascinating to see an example of what the first steam locomotives looked like. To see the engine and snap a few photos would probably be enough for the average tourist but I devoted an extra 10 minutes or so to read the information about the«Best Friend of Charleston»…it’s really an interesting story(if you love trains or American history) so if you are in the area why not stop in and take a look? It doesn’t cost anything…

The Best Friend of Charleston Train Museum is small but packs a powerful punch. We enjoyed reading all about the history of the train and snapping some pictures of the replica. The museum is free and it will take you about 10 – 15 minutes to check out.

The steam engine and carriages are now located behind the visitor’s center and properly in a fitting structure. The bldg. is composed of many glass panes so if the museum is closed, one can still get a great view, just not as personable. She is a replica of the 1924 of the 1830 original. A must see if you are a history/railfan, oh and its free.
