Rollin Smoke BBQ

Rolling Smoke shone through the darkness and fog of our very long drive to college. Boy, this place is good.
So good, in fact, that I’m considering making the West Virginia route to Illinois the only route I’ll ever take, just because it brings us near Charlestown, WV, where the wizards at Rolling Stone do their barbeque magic.
I’m no expert in BBQ but growing up in Virginia means that I’m no stranger either, by any measure of the word. This place is bomb! Very friendly staff and man, that BBQ was even friendlier to my palate.
We had the mixed platter and it did not disappoint. Moist and almost decadent brisket. Smokey and delicious chicken. Pulled pork was great too.
My only advice — come here for their meat. Its what they do. The other stuff (sides, etc) is good too, but why fill yourself with other food when they’ve clearly put hours into their meat?

I have driven by this place countless times when in visiting family. I finally had a chance to stop (well, my mother in law picked up takeout).
I had a small platter. The brisket was way overcooked, but the flavor was good. The wings were just ok. I liked the sausage, but it wasn’t spectacular. The pulled pork was probably the best meat on the plate. The rib was also overcooked, but the flavor profile wasn’t as good on it as it was the brisket.
The sides were what seemed to be a hash brown casserole and a green bean casserole. They were both pretty tasty. My wife had a side of mac and cheese. Traditionally, mac and cheese is one of my favorite BBQ sides. This one was ok, but it just fell short of my expectations.
I had really high hopes for this place because it’s consistently well reviewed. I may have just caught it on a bad night. I’ll get around to giving it another shot at some point. If/​when I get around to my next trip, I’ll update the review.

Best BBQ in town? You got that right. I’ve heard really good things about this place. It definitely lives up to the hype.
I ordered the mini sampler platter. It comes with one rib (delicious), two chicken wings (delicious), brisket (delicious), smoked sausage (delicious), and pulled chicken bbq (you guessed it, delicious). The meal also comes with a roll and butter, and two sides. I got the bbq baked beans and mac and cheese. The beans and mac and cheese were good. I have to agree with another reviewer that the mac and cheese was a little too cheesy.
You get so much food it’s ridiculous. I’ve used this same platter for three meals.
My dad got the bbq sandwich platter. He had so much bbq on his sandwich he had to take some off and save it for another meal.
Don’t let the location and building fool you. It took me a few drive by to find where to order the food. The staff is very friendly and they are very quick.
Can’t wait to go back again.

This is one of the best bbq places in WV, when you pull up you are greeted by the smoke of the smokers as you order your meal. I tried the sampler plate. The sausage was my favorite item. I am normally not a huge fan of chicken but they did an awesome job of getting that smokey flavor into the meat. We will be back again

Finally got to try this place after hearing all the reviews. Got excited to learn owner was from Houston area and I live there and lots of great BBQ
Overall very disappointed in BBQ. Dry and flavorless. This was even after they handpicked meat.
Everyone else wasn’t impressed either
I realize BBQ style is a personal choice but very unsatisfied
Plus NO pickles. I guess that is a northern thing.

Had a friend have a death in the family — got off a plane in Huntington — called — orders bbq — buns — slaw — picked it up an hour later — was the perfect thing for the family to come home to — thank u rolling smoke

This place is phenomenal for great BBQ and Ribs. Our office plans our schedule around the traveling food wagon through the week. Great food no matter what you get. Staff is great and courteous and the price is very good for the large portions you receive.

Some of the best BBQ you will ever try! Everyone is so friendly and the daily specials are legit! Eat here!

This was a 100% surprise. We actually thought the GPS was losing its computer mind when it told us we had arrived. Do NOT let the parking lot deter you. The food is amazing!!! We had pulled pork sandwiches and sat on the river bank. The food was phenomenal! The staff was friendly and helped us in every way possible. If you are anyplace near this restaurant.. GO!!!

This place is a hidden gem. They have the best baked beans I’ve ever eaten. Their pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and sausage are all good… but the grilled chicken wings are the best! We served Rollin Smoke BBQ at several events over the past month and a half or so, and everyone loved it. I highly recommend trying it!!!

Great BBQ. I live in Texas and eat BBQ weekly, and I often get disappointed when trying it while traveling. Very tender and tasty brisket. Also got to eat down by the river with the ducks and geese.

A little unorganized, and no seating (carry out only) is inconvenient, but the ribs are outstanding. So was the pulled pork. Every thing I tried was just delicious. Well worth the trip.

Wow! My only regret is I didn’t get the frog legs! I got the mini sampler. Meat Meat Meat and more amazing meat! Couldn’t eat it all. Husband got full slab amazing! Couldn’t eat it all! Yaaa left overs! So sad not open tomorrw! they even had a gluten free brownie! Yaaa! Don’t plan on eating there and parking is a bit well there is only a bit of parking. Best bbq I the middle of nowhere that when someone say why are u going to Charleston.. 3 words ROLLING SMOKE BBQ!

My aunt got Rollin Smoke for dinner last night and invited me over and she got a side of slaw which was delicious. Everything else was superb, as always.

You know it’s going to be a great meal when you are greeted by the aroma of hickory smoke and a smile!
We decided to stop here during our last road trip. What a great decision that was! The setting was so neat! It literally was a «VAN down by the river»! We were a party of 6 and ordered 4 rib platters and 1 brisket platter. All were smoky and delicious! The kids especially liked the potato wedges and mac and cheese. $ 40 fed the whole family and we had plenty of food to spare. We could’ve easily ordered 1 less platter. We will definitely come back the next time we are in the area!

This BBQ joint is exactly what you’d expect a great one to be: complete dive aesthetic and great food. Some specific reviews:
Mac and Cheese: good but not the best I’ve had, a heavily sauced cheese makes it taste more like Stouffer’s than southern mac. Still, a good pick.
Wings: Delicious fall off the bone, great wings. good with both the BBQ and buffalo sauces though the buffalo is quite spicy as expected.
Ribs: huge. a rack is double what you’d expect to get in terms of meat quantity, these are massive ribs. One of mine had meat which was dry and chewy, the other was more tender which I expected. The bottom half of our rack was in a pan soaking in juice and sauce which made the ribs on the bottom a little overly soaked and not getting as much of the meat/​sauce taste balance.
Pulled pork: excellent though very finely shredded. Good flavor and great even without a bun.
Highly recommend this establishment for those craving BBQ

The staff is friendly, the Pit Master is generous, and the owner is welcoming to all!
My co-​worker and I were looking for a bite to eat while driving from Ohio to North Carolina and I stumbled upon this gem because of others on Unilocal!
I ordered Pulled Pork, and Chicken Wings. The both were extremely delicious and the Chicken fell right off the bone! I’m sorry for using exclamation points so much … But this place is AWESOME!!!

We were driving through WV and hungry for BBQ. I have a rule about Unilocal.I never go to restaurants with less than 20 reviews… but we really wanted BBQ. So we took a chance and it paid off big! I had the brisket and it was the most tender that I have ever had! My husband loved his ribs with the sweet smoky sauce. We both devoured our apple slaw, Mac and cheese, hash brown casserole and baked beans. The owner and staff was so nice and friendly. Note that it is pretty rustic looking from the road. No northerner would stop but once you get in it is so cute, clean and just makes you feel good!

I never give five stars, I’ve also never been treated like an old friend and eaten as well either.
Carl knows his craft well. Unlike most places that throw it all in one smoker not here, everything is prepared the best way it should be. His low and slow brisket is the finest I’ve had in memory. Smoked potato wedges? Killing me! Chicken wings that actually fill you up.
Keep it up. I don’t really think there is bad Bbq but there rarely is great bbq and that is exactly what Rollin Smoke is, Great
