This place is NOT closed! We ate there twice during our five day stay. The fish is very fresh and delicious. We also had a ramen bowl, which was great. Get The Dragon’s Tongue drink; it’s so damn good!

My husband and I went to the new sushi hiro last night, which is now called Izakaya Hiro. The new décor is beautiful. Unfortunately the sushi hasn’t improved. The sushi is small and the fish did not taste fresh. The sake selection is impressive but they have the same selection at other places for much cheaper. Our cold sake was not cold. The crab salad and the octopus salad were both very good. Overall I would say go to Wasabi or Bambu instead. The sushi will taste better and the sake will be cheaper. On a more positive note the wait staff were very nice and attentive. Hopefully the food will improve as their menu expands in the weeks to come, but with such a limited menu one would think they could get it right.

This is a really under appreciated Japanese Restaurant. The fish is fresh and selected by the owner from local sources it seems. It is run by a very friendly Japanese man and his wife and looks and feels like all the family owned places my family enjoyed when we lived in tokyo.(bonafides: I lived in Japan for 4 years, asia for 15). I would recommend ignoring the old reviews. the place changed management a few years back. give it a try. good sushi for a reasonable price

My experience with Hiro has always been the best, I knew him when he worked at Kyoto’s on Savannah Hwy. Many a night I have dropped a C note on his sushi without any dissapointment. In fact if you get to know the man well enough he will offer you items off the menu that he doesn’t typically give out. I like it when he smacks the surf clams down and they start moving, you know the sushi is so fresh. I would recommend Sushi Hiro in Charleston over anyone else in the low country.

I lived in New York City for 12 years so I am familiar with good sushi. This place unfortunately does not make the grade. Below par sushi. I would pass on this place and save your money.

Very good. Great food and polite service. And the devil roll is a must! Pricing was not bad either.

This was the first time I was able to go to Sushi Hiro. The first time was a little after 9PM and since there were no customers, they recommended we don’t stay even though they were open til 10. On this evening they really urged us to leave shortly after 10:30(which is the closing time but should be the last time to seat). That was not handled well in my mind. As far as the Thai and sushi. The food was OK but not the best in downtown Charleston. Overall, the service was engaged and I give kudos our server. I would chose other options if you are in the mood for sushi or Thai and of course come early.

Sushi the size of your pinky is a perfect description of the rolls we got for their lunch box menu. For approximately $ 10, you get 12 pieces. When I saw that, I was so sure there was no way I can finish it… until it arrived, and I realized it was almost not enough. The lunch box comes with 3 cali pieces, 3 philly pieces, 3 spicy tuna, and 3 pieces that look like california without the fish roe… The starter house soup was good but really salty. The only thing i really liked was their spicy tuna rolls, which brings this review to a 2.5 star. I rounded up because the sushi there is not unedible.

I read the other reviews on Unilocal and was a little discouraged, but went to this restaurant anyway since I had a gift certificate. My experience was vastly different, especially in terms of service(we had a great and attentive server named Jared). I suspect this may be because we went on a Tuesday night rather than on a weekend night. The food was good and I felt that the prices were very reasonable. I would recommend this place to a friend. This place does not have a children’s menu and really has no good option for kids under 6 on their regular menu, unless your child likes sushi.

The sushi roll was the size of my pinky — and to top it off, $ 50 bucks! I’m sorry, sushi in DC doesn’t even cost that much. It’s my fault though. We were pretty limited on choices due to Lent, and I should’ve Unilocaled before making a decision. Uggg… and Jim n Nicks looked soooo good!

Nothing fancy with the atmosphere or service, but the nigirl and rolls we had here were actually really good. I would actually rather go here to get decent sushi than some of the snootier, more expensive places around town.

Not going to spend much time on this because it’s not worth writing a long glowing review or a long bashing review. It was ok. Service is really slow — took them 10 minutes just to return my card after I got my check. Sushi was marginal. Atmosphere is underwhelming. Definitely other places in Charleston that I would hit before this one. I don’t think I’ll be going back.

Not bad. Not bad at all. We stopped here as an afterthought while meandering down King Street, and I’m glad we dropped in. Their menu was pretty nice, though I think their style of food is more«American Japanese» than anything that could be called traditional. Their California roll was the best I’ve ever tasted. Their udon is also good, though not quite authentic. We got politely shoved out the door after lunch though, cuz apparently places in Charleston close between 1 and 2PM or something. I wasn’t a fan of the«get the heck out of here» vibe, but oh well. I’d stop in again to try another dish or two, but it’s not something I’d go out of my way for.

Calling spaghetti noodles udon will get you killed in Japan.
