This is a great store with lots of fun stuff to enjoy. However My experience walking in on a rainy day at 4:30 just sucked. I had a rare free afternoon and having never been to this place I thought I’d give it a shot and drove down from Providence. I walked in the first shop around 4:10, and was warmly greeted and shopped. At 4:28pm I walked into Small Axe, No one said hello, the first words I heard were ” … just to let you know we are closing soon.” Now I had called before I came down and I was told they close at 5pm. So my reply was — «Hi there! Aren’t you open until 5pm?» The voice yelled back, yes, but that’s coming soon. It was exactly 4:28pm. Now, I’d like to mention this was a rainy day in early in May and probably I was one of the only people shopping. But I called first and was assured all shops were open. I did purchase something and as I was checking out I asked the woman which shop answers the main phone line listed for the umbrella factory that’s in the phone directory. She told me it rings right there e at small axe. She was the person on the phone that told me the shops were open until 5. I’m sure this place is slamming on the weekends and even week days during the summer months, but you would think customers walking in the door during working hours would be welcome. I left at 4:38pm. and I can’t say I’m in a rush to return. I would have LOVED to rave about this place, but I can’t. When I’ve had the chance to talk about it, all I can do is mention the cranky greeting from the woman at small axe who was old enough to know better.

I feel happy every time I stop in at Small Axe Productions. The owner, Dave, is a kind soul who loves music. As a matter of fact, if you’re lucky, you’ll pop in on a Sunday when Dave and his brother-in-law, Phil, are playing some music. The restaurant is quite lovely on a summer day. The inside cabin is quaint, but the outdoor dining is spectacular because the grounds are so pretty. I enjoyed a delicious burrito bowl, filled with homemade black beans, wild rice, and a fresh queso blanco. I also enjoyed a glass of homemade passion flavored raspberry tea, which was so refreshing. The main garden is maintained by Dave’s wife, and it is truly a beautiful oasis for one to wander. May I also add that I love the store, Small Axe Productions. It is filled with unique clothing, accessories, and items for the home. I really love this treasure in Charlestown.

This is my most favorite store at The Umbrella Factory and that’s because over the years, many other stores have come and gone, however; Small Axe always remains. Small Axe is the store that will sell you food to feed the animals. They have an awesome selection of gorgeous sterling silver/stainless steel jewelry, great home décor/gifts, women’s clothing, wallets and handbags, as well as an upstairs room with fun instruments and tapestries. When I walk into Small Axe, my heart feels happy. I’ve never walked out of the store empty handed. If I had hundreds of dollars to spend here, I would do it in a second. If you’re in the Charlestown, RI area, you must check out Small Axe Productions at The Fantastic Umbrella Factory; you will not be disappointed!

Every time I’m in Rhode Island, I make a point to stop here. I absolutely love the jewelry, figurines, and all natural products. The glass blown pieces are spectacular. The African and Asian pieces are so beautiful and remind me so much of the time I lived in India. All of the products are high quality, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their products. The man who does the glass blowing is often working at the register.
