When Mecklenburg County decided to expand the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, I initially expected them to just build a trail. Not only are they building a trail but they are building a gem of one. Uptown Charlotte is land-locked. Sure there are lakes nearby and the Catawba river but they are not near the city center and there is not a large green space located uptown which is why this greenway is so important. While the greenway path is nearly finished, it’s all the extras that they are still working on… fountains, seating areas, plazas, stairways all in a beautiful stone(or stone façade). The trail now goes from 7th Street down behind Park Road Shopping Center. I often find myself on the greenway because Freedom Park gets too busy. But that is changing. The greenway is becoming very popular on nicer days. It will be even more wonderful and something the city can show off to newcomers and guests once it is completely finished.

If you have driven near CPCC, Kings, or CMC… you should see the results finally coming to fruition of construction/development of this very nice greenway. You can tell there has been a lot of thought and planning put into this greenway, between the plazas, fountains, and public art there is something for everyone. The construction is also part of a project to restore/repair damage to Little Sugar Creek caused by over development. Currently the greenway stops at Morehead, but it may one day connect to the other Little Sugar Creek Greenway that takes you over by Freedom Park. I’m hoping the end of the construction would let them add a small section that lets you go underneath Morehead for a nice, un-interupted run/bike/walk/jog what-have-you. To be honest, I ran on it this morning and it was a little to dark to see if that section had be done anyway(and I wasn’t about to go running under a dark bridge…).
