So I schlepped out to east Charlotte in the hopes of finding a delicious sweet potato empanada. Maybe a few cookies too. The spot looked promising as I closed in — not one but two delivery vans indicated to me a successful little spot; but peering in I noticed somewhat limited shelf space. So I imagine most of their business comes from selling cakes made to order. Unfortunately I was not there for a mouthwatering tres leches cake. There were no labels in english or spanish so it was pretty much a crap shoot with the empanadas. I struck out — the one I chose ended up being filled with cloying cream cheese, not subtle camote(note: some folks like that cream cheese filling, I find it too overbearing). Some of the goods seemed stale on the shelves(it was only 10AM) but when I actually sampled my purchases they were still pretty fresh. The butterfly cookie was excellent, flaky and crisp. The concha was soft and good for pairing with coffee(which I am currently doing). Ok then. Of course the best thing about Mexican bakeries is the price: one creamy empanada, one big flaky butterfly pastry, one chocolate topped concha and a lemon lime jarrito soda pop for only $ 2.25. I would have preferred a larger selection, so my search will continue.
