Value City is a step down from Ross/TJ/Marshalls, but it can be worth your while to hit the burbs for it. For me, I only stop when I’m already in the area, but for considerably less than those other guys, you can get, like Jon mentioned, suits here at a major discount. Even though I outgrew my «I love sports» 10 year-old phase, these chains have GREAT deals on sports paraphernalia. My father shops here in the home goods section. He once found a deal on $ 3 lava lamps a few years ago, and gave every kid in the neighborhood, school, kid he saw on the street lava lamps. I think he still has some in the basement to this day. Point being, this is a fun warehouse to hit in the pursuit of looking for the perfect bargain. I much prefer Filene’s or Maxx, but this one’s easier on the wallet, and much more casual-minded.

If you enjoy shopping at TJ Maxx and/or Marshalls and you want to kick your value hunting up a notch, try Value City. Obviously, they carry a lot of clothes that are hilariously ugly — and sometimes they’re defective. But if you know what you’re looking for, you can find very decent clothes for probably a quarter of what you’d expect to pay for them at a leading retail chain. I haven’t been in there in a while, but they used to get all the stuff the American Eagle stores stopped carrying. They also have a lot of designer jeans and a even — get this — a huge section of men’s formal wear. A good tailor can probably make you look like you’re wearing a $ 500 suit, even though you’ll probably have paid under $ 100.
