My husband and I sought out Catherine Hill winery after having had a bad experience at a nearby winery. Catherine Hill, situated just off the side of Blacks Wood Road, is quaint and charming with down-to-earth friendly staff and visitors. There isn’t much parking on their hilly driveway, so most people pull off the side of the road. Walk up the gravel drive and into the small wooden barn-like building to purchase wines or have a tasting. There was a special that day as there was an event to raise money for the local animal shelter, so for $ 5 you could try all of their wines or, their normal, try just two wines for free. The tasting bar is very small(could comfortably hold 8 – 10), but the owner is always watching everyone’s glass and no one is empty for long. The pours are pretty generous, too. They had a live band playing, but I don’t think that is a normal occurence and there aren’t many places to sit, so it’s really just a stop-in kind of place. There are 18 vines growing in the front yard(all but 2 were lost in the last harsh winter) but they will soon be up and growing most of their grapes for the wines! Having only been open since 2011, Catherine Hill Winery has already proven itself as a force to be reckoned with in the Maine wine business. If you have the time to stop by to see these friendly folks, you won’t be disappointed!
