What did I miss??? The place is dirty a long wait and the food was not good. Too much use of microwave and dry.

I love Mexican food so I was excited to find out about this new place near my home. My wife doesn’t share my love of Mexican food so when she told me I was on my own for dinner a few nights ago I seized the opportunity to check out Taqueria La Cabana. There is a very small dining area inside the restaurant but given the limited seating I see this as more of a takeout place. Upon entering I was greeted warmly by a young man. I enjoyed the atmosphere of this family owned and operated establishment, they really make you feel welcomed and comfortable. When I told them I hadn’t been there before and needed some time to study the menu they gave me some chips and salsas to nibble on while I contemplated my order. I settled on the number 18 dinner combo(taco, burrito, refried beans and rice) with an extra taco. I chose the soft shell option for my beef tacos and since I don’t care much for cilantro I asked them to skip it. I enjoyed a brief visit with the with the friendly engaging crew as they prepared my order. When I got home I spread the food out and dug in. I have to confess I was a little disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, it was good but it didn’t excite me. I really enjoyed the delicious Mexican rice and the refried beans, very flavorful. The tacos I thought could have used more seasoning, they were good but a little bland. The flour tortillas were a little chewier than I prefer as well. I felt the beef burrito was kind of bland too, good but not great. I enjoyed the complementary chips with the white sauce but I’m not a big fan of their salsas. One salsa was mild and another was hotter and a third sauce was habanero based with a nice slow burn but not a lot of flavor. As I said earlier I don’t care for cilantro so that is probably the reason I didn’t care for the salsas. They were also thinner than I prefer. I like a thick salsa that stays on the chip. I did really enjoy their white sauce for my chips. I like Taqueria La Cabana enough to try them a few more times to experience more variety from the menu, especially since their location is so convenient to my home. I will update this review if I feel it is warranted.

This place is incredible. The authenticity of this place makes it a true hidden gym. 2 dollar tacos, can’t beat them.

I lived just down the road from this place, and I had no idea it was there until I was majorly craving Mexican food and found this place to be highly rated here on Unilocal. It’s authentic, inexpensive, and delicious! They even gave me a whole bag of delicious tortilla chips with salsa! Will definitely go again and again. :)

Being 3 doors down from this place is awesome, and terrible at the same time. Lol. I have to exercise great control. The food is great. Authentic & reasonably priced. Just a small little spot. Pop in and have a seat or grab some take out. You won’t be disappointed!

Food was not bad at all but I definitely was not impressed… Authenticity was there but food lacked a little flavor.

Thought it time to write a review since we’ve been coming here for months as our«go to» Mexican. My favorite is the San Jose salad, but the most amazing thing are the burritos! They are stuffed with so much goodness that it is sinfully good…

This is one of those hole in the wall places you’d drive by if it wasn’t for Unilocal. It’s pretty small inside, so plan your visit around that. I ordered three traditional tacos. Steak, chicken and carnita were all fairly flavorful, but really dry. I came early so it shouldn’t be meat that’s been so over cooked. I ordered mine to go. They give you three salsas. I found them to be just ok. The chips seemed like they’ve been sitting around for a while. I really wanted this place to be phenomenal so I can get traditional tacos when I visit. Unfortunately it’s pretty average. To those who are reading this and like Taco Bell you should come here to eat. This food is 1,000 times better than any Taco Bell.

I had lunch there today as I was passing by the area and looking for a hole in the wall place for a bite. I had the lunch San Jose burrito $ 7.99. A 10″ loaded burrito. Man was it good. I’d rate it a 10 among burritos. I also tried a Pastor Taco off the wall board list $ 2. Awesome combination of pork & pineapple flavors. I’m stuffed. The only negative– No beer available. I may have been passing by and stopped today, but I will drive back for this great hole in the wall place. It has recently changed owners and names. It used to be Taquerias Y Tiendo San Jose. Now it’s just San Jose Restaurant. The owner served me and checked on me often. Good caring service and reasonably priced food. What else could you ask for? other than beer lol

$ 2 tacos can’t be beat. Also have a wide variety of meat choices. Also came with a side of chips and salsa. Salsa was delish and I know good salsa. Ordered 4 tacos 2 pollo 2 carne asada. Only reason not rated higher is due to the toughness of the asada, not as tender as I would have liked. The chicken was succulent and juicy with the fresh onions and cilantro it’s not to be missed. Will be back real soon

This is a place everyone needs to try, amazing! We tried this place tonight based upon location & Unilocal reviews. We ordered Mexican tacos, tacos, tostadas, fried ice cream, & sopipillas; everything we ordered was delicious! It’s nice to have this good, local eatery in the area close to home. The price of the food is great & although inexpensive the food exceeds expectations! High quality food for a very reasonable price. Customer service… felt more like we were at dinner at the families home not a restaurant; hospitality at its finest! The place does not look like much as you drive by but on all aspects it is well worth the stop! Next time you want a taco you must try this place!

Yay for $ 2 tacos! I was originally coming for take out but whined up eating in. There were just a few tables since it is a small store front restaurant. As I was waiting for my tacos I realized it was HOT in this restaurant! Maybe their AC broke or maybe because its 100 degrees outside and the unit can’t keep up. Either way eating spicy salsa and sauces became unbearable. The tacos are good, it wasn’t dripping with grease down your hand when biting into it. I had the carne azada and carnitas and both were good. The carnitas was my favorite with the blend of seasoning and rich roast pork flavor. Both were smaller than I expected but I guess for $ 2 that’s what you get. For me it was still filling so the size of it is all I needed. This place has more of an authentic, mom and pop in the kitchen cooking, so I will definitely be back to try out their other dishes!

Went there for dinner after work and I was amazed at how good the tacos were only $ 2 and much better than Taco Bell which will send you to the toilet with their mystery meat. The manager/server was attentive and polite made sure we had plenty of water. It’s a family owned business and we need to support these kind of people not these greedy franchise rich a holes! Tacos had plenty of cheese and beef. A+ I will be back. I wish them success. Great location on the Norfolk Chesapeake Va Beach SoNo border. Keep up the good work!

Awesome hole in the wall. I had a carne asada taco and the quesadilla relleno and they were both delicious. All tacos are only $ 2 and they have a wide variety to choose from. The service was great as well. Our server was very personable and our food came out quickly.

Awesome! I have to admit I’m biased, this place looks EXACTLY like a lot of taqueria’s back home in New Mexico and CA. Little hole in the wall with an awesome selection of street tacos. I had the carnitas, pastor and carne asada tacos, they were excellent, the service was excellent as well. Hands down the most authentic Mexican food I’ve found in the area, I’m sure I will be back multiple times… u

It’s a little tough to find but the food is maybe the best Mexican I’ve had. I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s tiny and hot inside but that somehow adds to its charm. We’ll be coming back again.

This place is pretty new. I think it opened about 3 months ago, and I went in to try it about a month ago. It was still in development, the store was not yet ready but the food was being served — and that’s all that matters. Food & Drink: I was dying to try this. The word TAQUERIA screams to me. I stopped by for a quick snack before heading to The Last Bison’s free concert. I tried the chorizo taco and agua de Horchata(rice drink). The taco tasted amazing, and I tried the sauces. Did it hit home? It sure did. The Horchata was great too — and I don’t finish sweet drinks much anymore but this one wasn’t empowering. Ambience: The cook and the other guy(owner?) are very humble folk. I was told that the cook has been whipping up tacos out the kitchen for 15+ years — so you’re dealing with man who knows how to cook this stuff! I had a great conversation with the two. This place is just around the corner from where I work! Have I advertised? Heck yeah I have, and I hope my Unilocal review does it justice. As promised, I will be back!

Food was great, the service was excellent. It’s a small restaurant but the hole in the walls are always the best. It’s so much better than the typical Mexican restaurants in our area. I will definitely be back.
