Awesome restaurant. We stayed at the inn Victoria and this restaurant was steps away so we came here for dinner 2 nights in a row. The first night we had spinach and artichoke dip, wings, a burger, and sweet potato fries. Everything was delicious. The sweet potato fries are a must and they come with 2 amazing sauces. The second night I had chicken parm and it was also delicious. The place itself is really cute and the staff is extremely friendly. If you’re in the neighborhood this place is a must!

Wow! Stop there for lunch, Amazing. Meatballs are crazy good, sauce has great flavor. Braised short rib steak and cheese is breathtaking. If you are in the area stop there, you would be sorry.

We had lunch there today. Amazing! The soup my son had was roasted butternut squash with coconut. My husband had the«not so common clam and corn chowder» Yikes! We wished we ordered a bowl of them. Enjoyed the thai wings as well. Our server Sarah, told us her favorites and I went with her veggie burger recommendation which was outstanding! It came with fresh salad and I’m thinking home made dressing. All dishes delicious and plentiful. Friendly staff all around — met the owner Rick who obviously takes pride as he should. They had two beers on tap which were fresh and delicious, Switchback and an Otter Creek double IPA. We look so forward to coming back!

Popped in for just drinks and dessert. The drink menu is inventive and very good – I had the Vermont & Stormy – and the desserts we ordered(especially the Happy Camper) were delicious. The food we saw go by looked great and the owner introduced himself and was very friendly. Will definitely be back for dinner. Definitely worth stopping in.

While visiting family in Chester we were invited to a dinner here at Free Range. WOW! I was impressed! From the moment we arrived we felt completely taken are of. We walked in for for our reservation of 14 people. They had us set up on two separate tables, but since we are rarely all together, we wanted to be all together. After asking if this was possible, within minutes they had one large table configured to accommodate us! Yes, we were a tiny bit cozy, but very happy to all be sitting together. Everybody on the tabled raved about how much they enjoyed the food. I started with the clam & corn chowder. A nice twist on this New England classic. Not too heavy, and with lots of flavor! For dinner I had a trout piccata. A small perfectly cooked trout sitting on top of a bed of yummy piccatta style pasta that had artichoke hearts, a sprinkling of sun dried tomatoes. Really yummy. You are getting the idea here? Delicious classics with a twist. My family can be a little intense when all together. We are loud, and talk over each other, etc. You know, family! Our waitress did not flinch at any of the nuttiness that was happening. She took amazing care of us! Dealing with any and all of our annoying needs, or requests. And not only dealing with it, but making it all more fun! She became part of the awesome experience we enjoyed while dining! I look forward to my next visit to my Family, because The Free Range will be on the list of must dos while there!

Been on the list to try for a while. First experience, breakfast, was superb. I was torn between the classic Egg’s Benedict and the wildly creative Michael’s Benediction, but opted for the skillet special — I’m a sucker for anything with chourico and cheese! The fried tortilla strips and homemade guac were great added details. A divine meal. As for service and experience, my server was awesome — attentive but not annoying. My coffee was always filled and I as given a carafe of water to have at the table. A cup of colored pencils sat next to the salt and pepper — because who doesn’t love drawing on their paper table cloths? Owner Rick walked around and personally greeted everyone at their tables. No complaints. Like the Terminator, I’ll be back.

Within the past month, I have been to The Free Range on two occasions– once for lunch and once for dinner. My lunchtime experience was surreal! The music playing was fantastic(Beck and Van Morrison), the service so friendly, and the burger so delicious! Getting a nice little bottle of prosecco with the mimosa was also a treat! Two weeks later, I returned for dinner. They were overwhelmed with people that nighht! The owner and the waitstaff kept apologizing for the delay in getting us our dinner, as the cook was struggling to keep up in the kitchen! That is FINEWITHME! I love lingering over a leisurely dinner! Especially in a nice, cozy restaurant such as the free range! I enjoyed my «steak frites», but I think in the future I will always order the burger with bacon, no matter what! Hoping to return soon! And wishing The Free Range much deserved success!

My boyfriend, Steve, and I ate here for the first time last night(Valentine’s Day). We both have pretty high standards when it comes to dining out and were not at all disappointed with The Free Range. First — the service was excellent. Very friendly wait staff, attentive and genuine. Even though they were very busy, we were not at all rushed. The shrimp & avocado tacos that we had for an appetizer were absolutely delicious — the combination of soft shrimp with the avocado and the crispy taco with a delightful sauce was to die for. Our main courses were as equally delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection and very flavourful. The pork, again, cooked to perfection and came with a fabulous sauce and a healthy portion of sides. For dessert — the chocolate decadence — excellent. Great wine menu. The presentation of the dishes was superb and the affordability of the entire meal was a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Wow, love it! Warning: dress in layers, because our first night here we sat by the heaters and we’re super toasty, but tonight we sat by the window and were cold. Heating very uneven. Food was really great. All portions are fairly large, and the kids meals are especially large. We were up skiing at Okemo and came back for a second dinner since we enjoyed the first so much. Skip the appetizer and go for dessert instead: they’re great!

Our party of 4 had reservations at a place in Bellows Falls, but there was a mixup & we chose not to wait an hour. So we headed back to Chester to try to get into a new place our innkeepers suggested. Turns out luck was with us! The Free Range was everything we like – excellent food, well prepared cocktails, and friendly service – all at a reasonable price. The menu isn’t huge, but there were plenty of options for us. Tasty French onion soup, clam & corn chowder, fish & chips, Mac ‘n cheese with spinach, Caesar salad with chicken and a grilled chicken sandwich with cheddar, bacon and maple-flavored mayo. All delicious! Quite a few beers on tap, a nice wine selection and my favorite rye for an old fashioned kept us all satisfied. No one had room for dessert, but I’ll try to stop myself from gobbling down the delicious fries next time to save some room. I highly recommend The Free Range if you want a great meal served by nice folks.

Had a great late-lunch here and must say my wife and I cleaned our plates! She had a Veggie burger and I had the Mookster sandwich. Started with the butternut squash& coconut soup. so damn good. We will definitely be back for dinner. The owners are really sweet and it was a pleasure chatting them up.

I went there back in September and I have been thinking about their shrimp piccata ever since. Can’t wait to go there in a week to have another wonderful evening.

Service was super friendly and attentive. The clam and corn chowder was awesome. But those were the only good parts of my meal. I ordered a dirty martini and the waitress brought me a plain martini. When I commented to her that it was not a dirty martini, she said that the bartender thought a dirty martini is just a plain one but with olives. What? I was not offered a remake. The soup was awesome, but no bread was offered or brought to the table. My entrée was the duck special, over white beans. Sadly, both the beans and the duck were undercooked. It was not possible to get the meat of the duck leg bone. I even tried to pick it up with my fingers. Another 10 minutes on the fire would do it. The apple crumble pie was ok, nothing to write home about. My espresso was lukewarm and weak. Worst espresso I have ever had. Ok, they have been opened two months so some shake down is to be expected. I WAS impressed and surprised that Rick the owner came by to greet our table. Nice personal touch and most appreciated. I did pull him aside to tell some some of the issues I encountered

I’ve had great apps here, nibbles from the entrees of others are also very good. The Calamari Flatbread is really fun and different. Heard good things about the fish & chips. Crème brûlée was perfect. Switchback and Wolavers IPA on tap, great selection of local spirits. This place is new, and still working through some operational things I think. The food & drink are great.
