Hilltown Tree and Garden

Jim was great, from giving us a free estimate to arriving here quickly and working hard and cleaning up thoroughly. The trees and garden needed a full re-​working and we can hardly believe it as we walk by the windows: everything looks gorgeous. We are getting more light, the trees are back from the house, and the garden now looks as it should. These guys are professional and know what they are about.

We’ve hired Hilltown Tree and Garden to work on the trees at our second home in Western Massachusetts on two occasions. We have a long row of very old and majestic sugar maples along most of our road frontage, and another equally noble and old specimen next to the pond in our back yard. We lost one maple during a hurricane seven or eight years ago when a heavy and very long bough couldn’t handle the wind and broke, bringing part of the trunk down with it. That tree had to be brought down (by another firm, with whose work we were very happy.) We were determined not to lose any more of these grand maples, if we could help it, and finally decided to spend some money to preserve them.
Jim worked with us to determine which trees we should focus on, where the weak points were on each tree, and what should be pruned, what should be thinned, and what should be cabled. He explained everything to us patiently and carefully, and together we developed a plan.
His team of experts worked hard and steadily to do the work. When questions arose, Jim consulted with us before acting. Each individual workmen had a role to play and had the skills to do his job, but they also had an easy rapport with one another and worked as a team.
Along the way, Jim took the time to point out work that needed to be done and identified those jobs we could do ourselves. He offered advice on how we should proceed (for example, strategies for how to handle wayward lilacs and forsythia bushes).
We were thoroughly satisfied with both the work performed and the process of working with Jim and his crew.
Recently, our insurance company threatened to cancel our insurance unless we removed all the branches overhanging our garage. We discovered the warning late and had to move quickly. A couple of tall ash trees had to be taken down, and many branches had to be trimmed. Jim fit us in to his schedule; the work was quickly, skillfully, and carefully done. His men reached what they could from the ground, climbed trees when that was necessary, and dispatched the job quickly, with no damage to anything.
We have a lot of trees. Next time we need work done that we can’t handle, Jim’s coming back.

I’ve had Hilltown work on my house three times and have always been super pleased. These guys are experts. Jim always has time to explain everything, when he comes for the estimate it’s practically a continuing education course.
They aren’t the cheapest but these guys are pros, exactly who you want climbing trees with blades and chainsaws in your backyard.

I hired Jim and his company, Hilltown Tree and Garden for a couple different jobs — one, to prune and cable some important but scraggly trees and, two, to give me a plan for a couple privacy beds.
Jim is knowledgeable and well trained. What I like most about him is his willingness to share information and his articulate nature in doing so.
