When your fingertips morph into numb little calloused pads you know this needlepoint thing has gotten out of hand. Seriously out of hand. Like: if I die tomorrow my heirs will have 3 unfinished needlepoints to contend with and we all know what happens then. Hello garage sale. If you’re a needlepoint fiend or a wannabe, Ehrman Tapestry is someplace you should know about. What you need to know about them is that they produce the most beautiful needlepoint kits out there in the marketplace. If you’re not going the hand-painted, hand-selected thread route, Ehrman’s is where you should be going instead. For prices from around $ 80 — $ 4700 they put together and ship an accurate kit with canvas, threads, and everything you need to get started. Notice I didn’t say everything needed to finish up; that’ll take light years young grasshopper. I was recently working on a particularly attractive piece in a public area and drew the attention of a young teen who wanted to know how long this partially completed piece would take me to complete. «If you worked on it every day» she inquired, «how long would it take you to finish?» Ridiculously, I responded«How long every day?» as if I had some realistic answer at the ready. «3 hours» «1 year» Was I right? Would it really take me one year were I to work on it for 3 hours a day for the next 365 days? I haven’t the vaguest idea. Needlepoint is a journey not a destination. One gets there when one gets there. Ehrman Tapestry kits are designed by a wide variety of talented, creative textile artists each with unique appeal. Information about the textile artists can be viewed on their website. Kits can be viewed and purchased from there as well. Every once in a while Ehrman publishes a catalog showcasing the artists they feature. The catalogs read like art books; some are resold on Ebay. After a purchase, it’s rare to have any reason to call upon Ehrman Tapestry as kits are fully self-contained. Sometimes however, you mistake a light green for a lighter green and a lighter green for a white and soon you notice that you have an insufficient supply of needed threads remaining. This is called a goof though nobody in the needlepoint world seems to agree that such a thing exists. At these times, you will call upon Ehrman(by phone) and they will tell you that lots of people have made that same error, it’ll all look great(if moderately different than planned), and certainly don’t tear out all of that work you’ve spent months on. Instead, they’ll ask you to send them a sample of the threads you need more of(10 cents per thread) so that they can ensure thread from the new dye lot matches. They’ll send back what you need without incident. Needlepoint people are really nice. Ehrman also sells beautiful embroidery kits.
