Tokyo Bowl

There are not many selections in town, so Tokyo Bowl is pretty much alone in its category. Visited with the family, since we have always loved Japanese cuisine. Our experience was good, but we have been spoiled with amazing Japanese food our entire lives, and this was a bit of a let down.

Very disappointed. Spicy seafood noodle soup for $ 8.50 turned out to be an instant ramen soup. I can’t understand how a place that calls itselt a restaurant can serve such food. And if I craved instant noodles, I could get them at any food store for $ 2.00.

Not bad, but it seems like they’re missing something in their rolls to make it great. Decent flavors, but they have skimped a bit on the portions. Service was VERY good and prompt. I wish the tea was free but it’s $ 2 a cup. A bit expensive in my opinion. Considering the cost of a box of tea. We ordered the Heart Attack (jalapeño poppers) they were good. Our main entrée was a Lobster Popcorn Roll $ 12.50. It was ok, but for that much money it was lacking some lobster. All in all, average sushi place.

Since we are in Cheyenne right now for an extended period of time I’m so glad we found this place! We had the heart attack as an appetizer. Yum! A volcano roll and a tnt roll. All amazing. Wonderful wait staff. I’ll return many times if I have the choice.

I tried 4 and 5 stars sushi. This place is not that. I give it 2 stars because of the friendly staff, nice and calm atmosphere, and decent prices. 2 rolls for $ 10 is cheap for sushi. However…
The sushi is not good. The rice is not cooked right. It was too hard. Watch «Jiro dream of sushi» and you’ll see how sushi rice should be made. Imagine supermarket sushi. Now subtract one on flavor, texture, freshness and you get Tokyo Bowl sushi. The sushi at King Soopers down in Dell Range taste better than here, though not much better. The teriyaki chicken was a joke. All they did was boiled a piece of chicken breast and pour teriyaki sauce over it. And the teriyaki sauce was bland. I was not please with the food.
Okay, I understand you are in Cheyenne, a small town focused heavily on fast food and burgers. You shouldn’t expect good sushi and you are right. There are no good sushi anywhere in this city. This is not the place to go to satisfy your craving for sushi. Keep driving and hope that your appetite changes to American food or until you go south into Colorado.
I tried, but won’t try again.

Well i got there at 830 pm and they close at 9 pm…
FOOD was Very Good… BUT felt rushed…
at 9 pm they notified us they were closed and if we needed anything else…

So, my cousin, sister and I brought her here.
My cousin and I (both love sushi) were extremely happy with the quality and selection of the rolls.

Decent for Cheyenne and surrounding area. For better/​special occasion sushi, I’ll drive to FoCo. Each time I’ve eaten here I have nigiri sushi, yet smell like the tempura was cooked next to my seat. Their HVac system needs some attention. Smelling like stale oil after a meal is not cool.

Best sushi I have had away from the coast! A little pricy, but the quality is there!

I was as skeptical as anyone could be about trying sushi in Cheyenne… especially after just spending a week in Hawaii! Wow. I couldn’t have been more wrong! This is a hidden little gem and is honestly better than most places I have tried in my native Colorado. Service was quick, variety was great and most importantly, everything was FRESH. I will absolutely be going back to this little joint for sushi!

We just moved to the area and stopped at this restaurant on a whim for lunch. I lived in Japan for 4 years, and my previous location (Wichita Falls, TX) had a fantastic Korean Sushi place. I was a bit skeptical about what Cheyenne could offer me in terms of sushi, much less anything resembling «real» Japanese food.
WOW! This place exceeded my expectations! We ordered off the lunch menu. The prices were VERY reasonable for the amount of food you got. (I was stuffed when I was done.) Our group ordered beef yakisoba, beef teriyaki, California and spicy tuna roll. There was also miso soup, rice, and salad (with ginger dressing). All of it was VERY tasty and the yakisoba tasted quite authentic. I enjoyed my California roll and the person who ordered the Spicy Tuna said it was good but not very spicy (to be fair, she lives near Louisiana and they have a different definition of spicy).
I also got beef gyoza (pot stickers) and was very surprised at how good they tasted. Usually gyoza are pork based and steamed. These were fried. They had an amazing flaky-​tender texture (hard to describe) and the meat mixture inside was some of the best I’ve ever tasted. If you’re thinking of getting an appetizer, try these! So very worth the money!
The staff was also friendly and polite. They made sure our drinks were filled and got plates out of the way quickly.
My one minor complaint is the bathroom toilet (women’s side). The right one didn’t want to flush. I really had to jiggle the handle to get it going. I won’t take any stars off the place for that though. The bathrooms were clean and the other toilet probably works just fine.
We will definitely be back! I hope to be a regular at this place very soon! :D
EDIT: I’ve been here several times over the last few months. I’ve tried a variety of sushi rolls and nigiri. I would not call the nigiri «Japanese authentic» in terms of flavor, but it’s still quite tasty. I would definitely get their nigiri again! I haven’t tried all the sushi rolls, but the ones I have tried have been consistently good.
In general, the service and food seems to be fairly consistent. I did notice that cooked and fried foods (like yakisoba or tempura vegetables) can vary in quality from great to mediocre. I’m not entirely sure why, as it doesn’t seem tied to day or time. Most of the time the food is great. But if you go there and get a mediocre dish, rest assured that would not be the norm.

First and foremost, this review and score will be based on how I compare it to what my local area of Omaha, NE has to offer. That being said: Cheyenne, you fiend. I want to take this place home with me to Omaha and live with it. Take it to the park or the zoo, have movie night with it, go thrifting with it, and grow old and goofy together. Compared to what I’m use to having, this place tears them apart.
First off, why the H was I all the way out in Cheyenne? Well my Special Lady Wife and I had just spent the week in Yellowstone and it was time to make the 17 hr voyage home. I opted to take the task of making most of the drive since it was her birthday I wanted her to have a day to just stretch, take pictures of the cool sights, and enjoy life. I knew the biggest place we would hit on the way back would be Cheyenne, so being all sorts of fantastical and dashing, I told her to Unilocal Cheyenne and see what they had to offer. Knowing she gets all hot and beefy over some sushi I told her to find a place in town and I’ll take her there and let her take it to task.
After a few minutes of searching, and over 8 hrs of driving, she decided on this place based on a few reviews and a quick read-​over of the menu. With our destination set we proceeded to follow the kooky directions to get there. We survived the round-​about and an endless array of minivans and ended up in front of what looked like a converted fastfood restaurant. It seems pretty «eh» on the outside but we tend to never judge a book by its cover. And how! The inside was a little more dressed up and was clean and welcoming.
We were greated immediately and seated. It was then we were giving their hefty menu. And it had pictures!!! I like pictures of stuff!!! In about 10 minutes we had ourselves sorted out, having ordered partially with our eyes and reading the contents of some of the rolls. In decent time the rolls we ordered began to arrive ranging from one wrapped in cucumber (new to me!) and some other rolls drizzled in various sauces or topped with lobster.
We ended up getting 5 sizable rolls and each one was considered a winner. Let me put it this way: Have you ever been to a place, be it tapas, sushi or a place with a bomb appetizer sampler platter, and it’s so good that you find yourself conflicted? Conflicted by which bite will be your last bite because that’s the awesome taste you want left on your pallette as a reminder that you did something good for you mouth today. Yea… that was this whole meal. My Special Lady Wife and I basically had to joust each other to see who got what as their final piece. She had a good birthday meal to say the least.
Sadly, we wanted to do another round but we still had a long drive to make and didn’t want to eat ourselves to sleep. We did actually considered getting a hotel in town as an excuse to get more. Seriously… we pondered this long and hard. It was some darn good sushi. So to say this place, in MF’n Cheyanne, outdid my local offers is an understatement. You guys win… damn you. Eat up Minions!

Delicious! I was so gladly surprised at just how delicious the sushi was. It was fresh (as fresh as possible for landlocked seafood) and the only criticism I have is that the rolls were not rolled as tight as they could be so it was somewhat difficult to pick them up without having them fall apart. Service was friendly and speedy considering it was hand-​rolled sushi. Godzilla roll was my favorite! Otherwise clean and a nice atmosphere as well.

Stopped in for dinner while on a road trip from the Midwest to California. The sushi was good, but it wasnt great. We were tired of American fare and Tokyo Bowl was a nice diversion.
We split five items and a big bowl of Udom between four people. We had a tuna roll, salmon role, rainbow roll, salmon sashimi, and seaweed salad. The Rainbow Roll was a little different as the base roll had crab instead of tuna. I would say the fish draped across the top on the roll was not very thick, definately have had larger pieces at other sushi places. The standard rolls were, well, standard. The Salmon sashimi was very good with large fat pieces of fish. Oh, the fried green tea ice cream desert is huge and could easily be shared by 4 people. I would go back to Tokyo Bowl but with expectations that sushi is good but not great.

Originally from the Seattle area, I was very skeptical. Sushi? Cheyenne? My brain was telling me no. But my stomach was craving it. So I decided to dive right in (making sure I had Imodium at home, in case my brain was right).
Stomach: 1; Brain: 0. And I’ve frequented ever since! First, great deals on basic sushi rolls: 2 rolls for 9.95 (8.95 for lunch). Otherwise same basic pricing at most other casual sushi bars.
The fish is actually excellent considering it’s landlocked locale. Not as tender as freshly caught fish you’d find at the coasts, but not bad. Had me wondering who their supplier was… can I get in with that person too? The rice is perfect. Not mushy. Not bland. Not over seasoned. Not cold. Not hot. Perfect… right at room temp, each grain holding it’s own but very tender. Which is better than that other place downtown.
Service was great. Three servers, very polite and attentive. Usually 2 sushi chefs and one cook in the kitchen. Sure, the servers are Korean and the sushi chefs are latino, but it’s the product I’m more concerned with. Oh, they have some Korean dishes on the menu as well.
So let go of your higher thinking and let your stomach waltz you into this gem of Cheyenne. You won’t be sorry!

Only in Cheyenne for one night… apparently we picked one of the busiest spots in town. Place was packed… and seemed they only had two servers. Yet they moved fast. If lived in this town, I’d certainly frequent Tokyo Bowl. Even at dinner service, they offer 2 rolls for 9.95. Such a deal. Good flavours… nice presentation… and generous portions.
It may take an extra minute for food to arrive… but thats due to the fact they are swamped. BUT worth it.

I went to Tokyo Bowl the first time about 4 – 5 years ago and the service (checking every 10 – 20 minutes, forgetting our order) and food (room temperature fish) was pretty awful.
When my boyfriend suggested we go last year, I was pretty hesitant because of the horrible experience I had prior.
I now DO NOT regret giving it a second chance. It has since been taken over by new owners and it is my favorite restaurant in town.
The staff is friendly, very attentive, and helpful if you’re new to sushi. We have never had bad service and the food is always stunning and delicious.
It is pretty pricey for Cheyenne, but there are some options (select rolls-​2 for $ 9.95, and lunch and dinner combos that are big enough to share) if you are watching your wallet.
We have gone to Denver for more expensive sushi, and found Tokyo Bowl is still the best. The only places I’ve had better sushi are in coastal areas, and this place still gives them a run for their money.
This place is truly a gem in this little town.

Now under new ownership and much improved! Having ate here many times under the old ownership, I stopped when conditions under the old ownership went down hill. The food soon followed. Now the place is back on track and better than ever. New items, excellent sushi. Will go again much much more.

We’re in Cheyenne, Wyoming for the night and who’d expect to find a sushi restaurant here, nevermind a GOOD sushi restaurant.
The Tokyo Bowl’s got an ample selection of rolls, sushimi, combination plates — just what you’d expect to find in a great sushi place.
I had the «Popcorn Lobster Roll» (playing it safe). Small lobster pieces, fried, and put on top of a spicy tuna roll and avocado with Japanese mayo. It was VERY good. My wife had the «Baked Salmon Roll.» Both dishes came beautiful presented and it was exceptionally good.
And, unlike some of the other reviews here, the service was outstanding! We were very well taken care of; filling glasses, clearing dishes, asking questions to make our dinner that much more enjoyable.
We’ve now marked Tokyo Bowl on our map for a «must stop» place.

No, but seriously folks, this was a decent find in Cheyenne. I was in the area and had read Cassandra’s review so I decided to stop in. I sat at the bar… The couple down the way from me seemed to be on very friendly terms with the chef, and they seemed like nice guys.
I got the dinner box, which had miso soup (good!), salad (good, but drenched in dressing and bit into a frozen piece of lettuce?), and a crunchy roll (yum!) and spicy tuna roll (yum again!)
The spicy tuna had less mayo/​sauce than some other places and the crunch roll tasted great. I saw some other orders going out and they were beautifully presented and looked yummy.
If I’m in Cheyenne again, I’ll go back… It’s a nice little asian gem among the big box stores.
