I was excited to get some pastries here. I checked to see if they accepted Visa cards as it says they do on their door. I walk in and get my things and then pull out my card and the woman gets upset telling me they don’t accept cards. I don’t feel I deserved the rude look and treatment. Was only looking to support local and I’ve heard good things about this place. Will not be going back. They should also put their trays by the front along with the tongs. There is no way I should know to look at the checkout counter for them.

This is my favorite bakery in the city! The pastries are huge and only cost a dollar. The owners are sweet. I go here whenever I want to treat myself to a weekend breakfast(although they are open all week). The blueberry muffins are the best!

This has to be the rudest business I have ever encountered. I phoned the bakery to place an order and the original lady I spoke to explained she was busy which is not a problem, I appreciate that people have busy days and asked if I could phone back in 10 minutes. Again not a problem. So I phoned back and as soon as I said hello she hung straight up on me. I thought maybe it was an accident and called again, same thing and this time she said go away. Have the manners to at least take my number and call me back when you have time, don’t just hang up on a customer. I am more than understanding when it comes to being busy in retail but this is not how you conduct a business. Needless to say I went somewhere else.

Best bakery in the Lakeview area! Can’t beat their prices anywhere! Everyday fresh goodies are available and they make enough to last until the end of the day! Always have friendly staff to help you out if you have any questions. It’s the perfect place to pick up a pastry for breakfast.

Located across from Pizza Rustica, it was hard to deny a Mexican bakery. This was my first time in one and let me tell you, I went crazy in this store. I love Bolillos. they are my favorite breads. It was midday, so sometimes the bread can get stale. I took those tongs and squeezed one the rolls. It was still soft! I bought 5 of those. But wait… how can you ignore the other treats? There were macaroons, sugar cookies, doughnuts. I grabbed two to three of each. I was eating with my eyes. When I went to pay for everything, the price came to $ 12. It was so cheap and so good.

I’ve walked past this bakery several times, but I just ventured in for the first time this weekend, and it’s a real treat! Everything looks delicious, so no matter what you pick, you’ve made a good choice. If you want to know what’s in everything, though, knowing Spanish helps tremendously.(This is what I went to college for – buying tasty pastries and knowing what they’re made of!) All those tasty pastries(btw, it’s all self service, which is very dangerous when you already want to try one of everything they have), plus the very low prices makes this bakery a go-to for all your sugar cravings. The lady running the counter is also extremely friendly and helpful. It will take a large effort on my part to not go there everyday and eat my weight in Mexican pastries.

We all like a good routine. Artemio’s has become a regular spot for me. Located conveniently next-door to my boyfriend’s apartment, I stop by here twice a week in the morning to grab pastries for me and the beau. Artemio’s specializes in Mexican baked goods, which I have a liking towards as someone with a Chinese palate. Chinese desserts tend not to be as rich and sweet as American desserts. I usually go for the conchas, they remind me of Cantonese pineapple buns but without the filling(which I never loved anyway). Artemio’s is usually bustling in the morning, though the lines move steadily. I don’t mind waiting a bit either, as I like to be nosy and look at what other people are piling on their trays. There is also mild satisfaction I get from observing other people getting their day started, too. And as David V. stated, Artemio’s – family owned and operated – feels like a vestige of the old neighborhood. Mexican aunties and uncles make up its customer-base, a welcome contrast to the younger crowds that fill up the bars in Wrigleyville.

Perfect. The breads and pastries take me back to my youth in Colorado where, like Artemio’s, the local panadaria served up not-too-sweet treats and delicious, wholesome breads and rolls. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the selection is as varied as it is mouth-watering. They take credit cards, too, which is a convenient bonus.

Going to Artemio’s was a one of a kind experience. All of the reviews are true: there are bunches of baked goods to choose from and none of them are labeled. For me, that was half the fun, though. When you walk in, you go up to the counter and grab a pair of tongs and a tray. Then, you go around to all the cabinets filled with the goodies(that you walked passed to get to the tongs and tray) and pick out whatever you want. I ended up grabbing 4 things my first time there, 2 I was familiar with and 2 I was not. Familiar items I chose: a doughnut and a muffin. The 2 I wasn’t familiar with: a long thin pastry filled with cream and topped with sugar as well as a short, more rectangular pastry that looked like it had a little bit of a sugary glaze on top. After I got my goods I waited in line. For a looonnnnggg time. There was no one at the counter. And that wasn’t because they didn’t know we were there, in fact, we had someone come out multiple times to let us know they were on the way. When I finally did pay, I think the total was $ 3.70. That is crazy cheap and worth a return in itself. When I got back to my apartment, I immediately dug into the goodies with my boyfriend. Some of the items had potential, and others were just kind of ok. Most of the items tasted and looked like they were mass produced and not baked fresh. Definitely not handmade baked goods as they were all so uniform. The doughnut was pretty good, it was a standard doughnut you could buy at a gas station. With all of the doughnut options in the city, this isn’t a destination spot. The same comment is true for the muffin, which also had a very dry cake. In fact, most of the pastries were super dry. I liked the long pastry filled with cream. Again, the outer shell was very hard a dry, but the cream on the inside was good and I wish there were more of it. The last item, the short rectangle with a sugar glaze was just that: some fried pastry with a sweet taste to it. I definitely wouldn’t crave these pastries again, but wouldn’t avoid the place altogether. I think there are a couple gems hidden here(I’ve heard a lot about the coconut macaroons) and would try to stick to items that have a frosting or pastry cream to go along with the really dry pastries. However, the price can’t be beat. If I need to fill up on the cheap(or if it’s the end of the month and my grocery budget has run out), I wouldn’t think twice about popping in. I think the quality is darn good and not at all unhealthy for the price you pay for it. I’ll probably be back.

I stopped in on my way to the«L» since it’s so conveniently located. They have a wide selection of tasty baked goods. You grab a tray and tongs and then bring them to the cash register to pay. Prices are on a list above the cabinets but the items in the cabinets are not labeled so if you don’t know your pastries you might not know what you’re getting. Don’t worry though! everything is pretty cheap(I didn’t see much that cost more than a dollar)

There are three reasons I always try to stop at Artemio’s: 1) They have some great stuff: the coconut macaroons and flan are exceptional, and a huge overall variety of items. 2) The prices are reasonable, or compared to the north side of Chicago, cheap. 3) It’s a vestige of the old neighborhood — a family owned/run bakery, open every day, all of the time. Don’t miss out on this experience. Get a tray and some tongs and load up — I’d be surprised if you could spend more than $ 5.

Absolutely LOVE Artemios! The FLAN is a must. I have been coming here since I was a little girl back when Cardenas(Grocery) was in front. Every time I go, which is often, it always brings me back to my childhood. I love the smell of fresh bread when I walk in. Everything in the bakery is good and the prices are ridiculously cheap. Hands down best Mexican bakery in town!

Pastries. All day, every day. This place is way too close to my work for my own good. Their pricing is probably arbitrary based on how much they like you, but it’s always cheap. Get those tongs and grab some mystery pastries. Nothing is labeled. You have no idea how fresh stuff is, and I’ve had some drier items, but if you see them loading up a cabinet, grab whatever that is. It doesn’t matter, they just made it. Identifiable thing you should definitely grab: croissants.

This place is yummy! Tons of cheap delicious pastries. No prices on anything, but it’s not really necessary because everything is crazy cheap. I got 12 cookies, 2 huge sweet roll things, a piece of coffee cake, a sugary roll thingy, and two danish like things. My total was $ 9.20 I also noticed that they have pretty cheap cake prices, so I think this place may become my go-to celebration-y cake bakery. For lunch I ate the coffee cake, and it was SO good. I’ll be headed back to Artemio’s soon for more. And the woman behind the counter was friendly, and everything tasted fresh, Crazy cheap!
