As good as all the reviews in and outside of Unilocal have written! Well decorated and modern restaurant. Everything on the menu looked good! We settled on the rib eye special, cauliflower, mushrooms, & fries. All were delicious! I want to go back to try the steak frites! The old fashions were tasty, but not as strong as other places I’ve been to. A good alternative to steak when u don’t want to go to River North.

First, the service was amazing. Thus the two stars. We sat at the bar and our bartender/server was awesome. Unfortunately I do not remember her name but she was thoughtful, creative, l and just a nice person. Thank you! The room itself has a great vibe. The food, however, was disappointing. We ordered the veggie appetizer. Good, although exceedingly small portioned. Next was the French Onion soup. Absolutely fantastic. I just wish it was served in a wider ramekin. Our one cup portion had very little cheese on it. Lastly we got the leek spaetzle. Styrofoam consistency with very little taste. Now, to the beef. I ordered the steak frite for $ 28. The meat was just bad. Regardless of how many fries you put with it, the star should be the steak, and it was frankly awful. Literally only ate a portion of it and took the rest home to feed my dogs. My dinner companion ordered $ 56 rib-eye. It was cooked incorrectly and had to be sent back. When it came back it was still cooked incorrectly, but he decided to go ahead and eat it. Wasn’t that bad, but it certainly was not worth $ 56. Lastly, and in my mind just inexcusable, is an incredibly poor selection(4!) of red wines by the glass. A couple of syrahs and a malbec. Who is the wine buyer for this place? Whomever it is really needs to step up their game and get both more creative and offer a greater selection, particularly when there are so many bottles available. We spent $ 250 for dinner for 2. I don’t mind spending this much when the food and wine are great, but this was just horribly disappointing. I understand many will disagree with me as per the ratings, but I hope management reads this and gets that it needs to step up their game. As someone that lives close(Bucktown) and loves to go out, I was really hoping this would be our go to restaurant. Unfortunately, at least for now, that won’t be happening.

Service was great but the same can’t be said about the food. Mediocre steaks at a very high cost(especially for the neighborhood). None of the sides were tasty either. Tried the Spaetzle, cauliflower gratin, and the mushrooms; all left much to be desired. The peanut butter mousse for dessert was actually good. Sadly, we felt unsatisfied and ripped off after the meal.

This was by far one of the best dining experiences that I’ve had. The restaurant is beautifully designed. The staff is prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable. But the food is beyond delicious. We had the crudités, charcuterie special(the foie gras was incredible), and short rib beignets. For entrees we had the swordfish, 55 day-aged prime rib and the duck breast. All were cooked perfectly and beautifully presented. Even the desserts and drink list were top notch. I will be back here again soon and will tell everyone that they are missing out if they haven’t been yet. Put it on the top of your list to try. Go now and go often!

A steakhouse 15 minutes from my house… on foot? Yessir! I came for dinner last night for a birthday party. Everything we tasted was great, from the beef heart ravioli to the shortrib beignets to the filet mignon to the steak frites to the NY strip to the vanilla crème brûlée and the daiquiri, smash and some of the dessert cocktails. And special love to our server who actually read all of the specials for the night AND their prices… I absolutely hate going out and having servers tell me their specials but not those prices. It’s pretty loud in here during dinner service, but otherwise, no complaints, although the soundtrack playing in the background here is poor compared to other city staples that have a cooler vibe.(Au Cheval, this is not.) Looking forward to coming back for lunch; prices are fair for dinner, but they are better for lunch given the change in offerings with more sandwiches. Very excited about this place now that I’ve finally checked it out…

Super rad. I went on a sexy man-date here with one of my best friends and it was a veritable meatsplosion. We both had the strip and it was cooked to perfection. Along with that the short rib beignets were magnificent. I’m not just putting a ridiculous descriptor on there for nothing. They were awesome. Great cocktails and very attentive service. I would recommend putting in a reservation rather than trying to show up.

My husband and I had a lovely dinner here last weekend. We were seated immediately upon entering at our two person table for our 8:00 reservation. Our server was friendly and helpful. Nice and affordable wine list. The short rib beignets were FANTASTIC! Yumm. Our steaks were perfectly prepared and delicious. Better than most steaks at fancy spots downtown. The cauliflower and fries were superb sides that nicely complemented our meat. The restaurant was long and narrow, and the bathrooms were beautiful. We will return!

This place is unassuming. Very understated entrance but you know something great is going on inside. I like that already. Come here for a steakhouse-type of dinner stripped of any old school white cloth traditional vibe. It’s chill, non-pretentious and you can dress however trendy you want, or not. I came here for girls night out and it was perfect. Date night, double date night, or friends night out at this place is also a great choice. The pork rillon was fried pork belly cubes and a perfect start to aggravate your hunger even more. I heart the Hamachi crudo; one of my favorites and each slice was pretty generous. The polenta was oh my creamy goodness! Really so good. We shared the 55-day dry aged bone-in ribeye 20 oz. The 55-day dry aged is really not much more expensive than the 35-day also at 20 oz. It’s almost like they want you to get the 55-day. I mean, who wouldn’t and why wouldn’t you? The chocolate cream dessert was good though it overpowered the shaved foie gras topping when eating together. At times I ended up eating the shaved foie topping separately from the chocolate cream at the bottom in order to actually taste the foie. Service was great. Good to see Santi! My old fashioned was pretty solid and not too sweet ++. I tried my girl friend’s vieux carre and liked it too.

The food here is very good, a solid four, but the service is what pushes Boeufhaus into five stars… from the hostess to bartender to waitress to sommelier, all were incredibly nice and accommodating– some of the best service I’ve had in Chicago. with that out of the way, lets move on to the main event… –started with crudite which is something i would usually never order at a restaurant(umm i can go to whole foods for some chopped vegetables) but was told we need to try it here — it was really good… a mix of pickled baby vegetables with a green goddess sauce — great little snack as we figured out what else we wanted to order. –short rib beignets — puffy little balls of fried dough filled with shredded meat with a delish sauce for dipping… little heads up, make sure the dipping sauce gets on the meat in the beignet — definitely needed for the flavor punch — polenta with tapenade of escargot– holy heck this was a great surprise. creamy, buttery, decadent, would definitely order again — oysters — yeah hard to mess this one up as long as they’re fresh(and they were — west coast were awesome) — foie gras –special that night and was super rich. the foie gras was creamy and very buttery– good but definitely a shared plate. –fries — way too salty but nicely fried and good aioli — cavatelli — yum! great flavor and the merguez was very good, just thought the cavatelli was a little too dense — cauliflower gratin — good but mildly flavored and would likely not order again. –55 day dry aged ribeye — would say this was a little disappointing, didn’t get quite the rich beefiness that i expect out of a dry aged ribeye. however, it was still a good steak, but i would likely try a different meat dish next time… — desserts were good, the pot de crème better than the bread pudding — wine — didn’t get the flavor profile we were looking for when discussed with the sommelier, but went well enough with the food that we didnt send it back. overall, would definitely return to check out the rest of the menu…

We came to Bouefhas for a holiday dinner after hearing great things. It lived up to its reputation. It is a small restaurant which seats maybe 48 including the bar. Reservations are strongly recommended. We had a later reservation and sat at the bar as that seating was available. The food was great. We started with ½ dozen oysters, the pork belly rillon, the short rib beignets and the beef tartare. The oysters were perfectly cleaned and the two vinaigrettes complemented the briny oysters nicely. I think the short rib beignets were a bit overrated at least compared to the other starters(however could drink the beef jus sauce that came with it). My favorite was probably the tartare. It was nicely done and the thin brioche slices let the beef shine. My husband’s favorite was probably the pork belly rillon with the slightly spicy red pepper sauce. Bouefhaus is known for their beef so, of course, that meant sharing the 35 day ribeye for our main course. The presentation is beautiful and it is served with the bone. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was so tender, juicy and flavorful. The accompanying sauce was delicious. We ordered the cauliflower gratine as the side. I thought it was almost a crime to not get the mushrooms with the beautiful steak, but I was wrong. The gratine was perfectly cheesy with a nice bake on top. The main course definitely stole the show and earned the 5. Service was on point. Our server(the bartender) was helpful and friendly and kept us from ordering the entire menu. My only complaint is that the courses weren’t properly spaced out — the items kept coming too quickly usually before we were finished with the other plate. We asked for them to slow it down especially for our main course and our server immediately worked with the kitchen to fix that. I would definitely go back. While it is certainly a nicer meal, it is reasonably priced for what you get. For two, with a bottle of bubbles, the tab was a little over $ 100/person with tip.

Unexpected. Unbelievable. Steak knives are laid out nicely but you could get a slice off the steak if you glared hard enough. That’s how tender it is. Leek spaeztle. Yummy. Rough country pâté. Salty but good. Amuse bouche of creamy polenta and escargot. And blocks from our Airbnb right in the neighborhood, not a fancy schmancy place. Pity the music was painfully loud on cheap speakers. I had to yodel at the boyfriend.

Three words. Short. Rib. Beignets. Is this the signature dish of this place? If it’s not. . it should be. Who ever heard of taking a savory dish like short rib and somehow getting it inside that sweet little pastry that we love from New Orleans? I don’t know, but whoever did this gets my vote cuz it’s delicious! Bouefhas is interesting to me as while I wouldn’t go out of my way to have dinner here often, it has an appeal that is apparent to many as it was packed on the nights I went here, so much so that they take a guarantee with your credit card when you make your reservation. But I found the website is a little off putting with all the«rules» they have about that reservation(don’t be late, you may be seated at the bar and don’t linger) Okay. i get that the space is small but it somehow didn’t sit right with me. Our server was very well informed and made sure that we knew about what we were ordering. We started with those wonderful short rib beignets served with jus for dipping which were amazing and also the bacon wrapped pork. We also had a harvest salad which were root vegetables(thinking this changes seasonally)…more of a plate of slivered veggies than a salad which while good wasn’t the favorite dish of the night. While my friends split the steak and frites, I ordered the fresh fish of the day which was over a pound of grilled salmon. It was delicious and plenty to take home and have on a salad the next day. And for sides, try the cauliflower au gratin and the bouef fries. Both delicious! The interior is a repurposed butcher shop. How appropriate. They kept the woodwork and cabinets, moving them to an alternate wall, and upfront is a refrigerated case that they are getting ready(it may be done by now) to serve deli type offerings for lunch. Know before you go if you drive they do not have valet and you may need to park a couple of blocks away as there is permit parking close by. Also– know if you are a party of 3 or less you may be seated at the bar so if sitting there is a problem, you may have to wait little a long time to get a table. All in all Bouefhaus is a hit in this neighborhood. And that’s good as there isn’t anything quite like it nearby. And don’t leave without trying those beignets. They are worth the trip alone!

First review of a restaurant I have never been in. Waited for six weeks for a reservation. Got there ten minutes before our time. Called ahead they said street parking available on Western. I dropped my wife at the restaurant and went for a parking spot hunt. Forty minutes later my wife was not at a table yet and the only parking I found was a seven block walk after forty minutes of circling. Yes there is street parking starting at the7000 N block of Western. Side streets permit parking only. By the way my wife reports the place is very loud and you need nocturnal vision to see the food. Boutique restaurant. Easy just say we recommend Über.

Came for lunch and like everyone else has said, the short rib beignets were amazing. They’re so good they almost make me mad. I also got a Bloody Mary and a Reuben. Both were absolutely delicious. Love the atmosphere in this place and our service was nothing but good. I didn’t get a bday treat comped for me, but it wasn’t my bday treat and I don’t feel entitled to free bday treats so… So no complaints here. We’ll be coming back for sure. Can’t wait to try their dinner menu!

I was quite impressed with Boeufhaus. If you like your steak with rock and roll, you will be too. As the saying goes, this is not your father’s steakhouse in terms of ambiance — its more of a shotgun bar, with banquettes on one side in front of the exposed brick — but in quality of meat, it more than stands on its own. With steakhouses, as with any meal, one must start with cocktails, and they were quite good, they do classic cocktails well. I had a rye Manhattan — Bulleit, as I recall — and Kelly had a Last Word. Superb! But I am getting ahead of myself. We informed the restaurant that this was a birthday dinner for moi, and when we were seated, two glasses of sparkling and a complementary appetizer — Crudite — arrived soon afterwards. How lovely! The crudite was excellent, and the sparkling wine crisp and clean. I know some Unilocalers have experienced a mix bag regarding service at Beoufhaus, but we had no complaints — our waiter was prompt and attentive. We went with the 55 day dry aged ribeye, rare, and were not disappointed. A lovely earthy flavor, and very juicy. For a side we had the spaetzle, and it too I recommend. The wine list is probably the most impressive aspect of Boeufhaus — a well balanced mix of West Coast and Old World wines, may of which are far off the beaten trail of standard steak houses, but still completely food friendly. And unlike your father’s steakhouse, the prices are eye-poppingly affordable. The 2004 Boisrenard Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a steal at $ 90 and opened up beautifully for our steak. But save me a glass if you order it, do you hear? Back to the ambiance, the room is a bit loud, but no more than most steakhouses. The difference is that the noise is from The Black Keys and other sludgy, droning rock bands, rather than crooners of the American songbook. I dug it, and you probably will, too.

I decided to have a small birthday dinner here a few weeks ago(for 4 people). I had heard great things and wanted to try something new while I was back in Chicago. Overall the food was fantastic. We had the short rib beignets, the tartare, and the veggie appetizers. We all ordered the steak frites dish as well. The beignets were amazing and I wish we had twice as many at the table. I also loved the tartare. It was a perfect size to share with 4 people and had plenty of flavor. The steak was perfectly cooked and the meat was beautiful and tender. The fries also held up well on the plate(and there were plenty of them). However, I was really disappointed by the service. Having read other reviews, it looked like some people enjoyed a nice little birthday perk of a comped drink or dessert. We got the veggie appetizer as a comped dish, and we didn’t even order it. I don’t want you to think I’m entitled to anything. But even the little brownie dessert(which was delicious and served with a candle) wasn’t comped. It was about 2 bite fulls of food… split by 4 people. My friend also had to wait for quite awhile for his first cocktail arrive. And when 2 of us ordered a 2nd glass of wine, it took so long to be delivered to the table that we ended up sending it back because we were ready to leave. The place felt a little pretentious and just not very welcoming or observant. Although I was impressed by the meat, suffice it to say that I won’t be back anytime soon.

This isn’t the typical RN steakhouse. It’s hipster. It’s casual. It’s pretty damn good! I would say 4.5 but no half-sies We had a large group but the server was great. There’s no cocktail list, but there is wine & other non etoh. The food was really the highs and lows. Tartare…YES! This was amaz Stra(something that I can’t spell right now)…YES! The bomb cheese and bread dish Short rib beignets were good, but I felt lacked the pizazz that I wanted Salad was fresh and clean Duck was just ok… of course, the dish I ordered Halibut was amazing! Artic Char was great And finally… the steak was fantastic! Sides were pretty rocking as well. Cauliflower gratin was like butter, cheesy, creamy goodness! Roasted mushrooms perfect! Spring veggies were good, but I felt lacked salt The bread pudding(complimentary) by our server… HOLYSHIT! The best I have ever had. Mmmmm, bread pudding… mmmm

This is not your father’s steak house, and thats a good thing. But this place is all about their beef and they have so much finesse. No 40oz chops with thick char crust around here, that’s also a compliment. Beef: 55 day dry rub 22oz bone-in ribeye cooked med rare had as much finesse as the the beef course of any of Chicago’s best tasting menus. Nice thin sear and pre sliced with the bone when delivered to the table. Nice seasoning, great flavor, and again my favorite word: finesse! Other notable good stuff: –stracciatella — if you like burrata style cheese dishes, then get this. Spread it on little toasts, delicious –cauliflower au gratin — rich and cheesy –beef fat frites — yes! –bread pudding dessert — sweet with some spice, dessert was destroyed by our table

It was my turn for date night and although I originally planned to go to Osteria Langhe, this is closer to the apartment and newer. When we arrived, the restaurant was mostly empty and a little quiet. We sat next to another couple who had just finished their steak frites and couldn’t stop raving about the restaurant. We ordered the short rib beignet(loved the sauce even though it was pretty salty. I wish the beignet was a bit thicker so it could really soak up the sauce), steak tartare(really good portion), amberjack sashimi(really light. Good sauce. Maybe just a little something for texture), 35 day dry aged ribeye(cooked perfectly. Sauce was great. Perfect portion for two) and cauliflower gratin(wasn’t as thick and heavy as I thought it would be which was nice) and a glass of rose. Overall, the meal was excellent. Service was on point and everything was timed very well. I can’t remember the name of the waitress, but she seemed to be the only server that night. I can’t remember the last time we were this satisfied with our meal. Also, I loved that they had Laguiole knives. Cuts through the steak like butter. I would highly recommend any steak lover to purchase a set of those knives. Mm. Our meal was about $ 110 – 120 without tip which was cheaper than we thought it would be. If we were to come back again(which we might! I don’t really frequent a restaurant more than once but it’s pretty close to the apartment), I would order the 35 day aged steak and maybe the tartare. Great place for the parents or a special night.
