Sorry Chundy’s! You almost made it as Golden Rise, and you almost made it again, but not quite. Man. Diversey & Sacramento is STRUGGLIN’. FYI — Golden Rise Bakery still exists in the form of awesome Farmers Market Stand(Check the Square on Sundays in the Summer), but the bakery/restaurant is now officially closed. Sac & Div now consists of: Chundy’s/Golden Rise(closed), a Supermercado(closed since 2006), a car-parts store(which I’ve never seen anyone enter), and Marathon Gas(which is CRAZY cheap).

Though it’s not as packed as you’d expect in better times, the biryani and curry dishes offered up at $ 5.95 at weekday lunch officially* makes this the best lunch deal on a street that runs from the shores of Lake Michigan to the tombstones of Elmwood Park. I also recently tried the $ 6 breakfast platter(standard fare, eggs, bacon or veggies, toast, potatoes) which was generously portioned, and put this a notch above the rest since they toast their very own fresh baked bread. *officially = according to Rob R.

I know of Chundy’s from the Logan Square Farmers Market where he serves delicious bread. We only stopped in for coffee this time, but it was lovingly prepared and just the right temperature. When you walk in you’re slapped with curry. And it’s so good! When we eat, we’ll update the review.

Huuuge portions, tasty food and a sweet interior. Sandwiches come with an oniony/garlicky pasta salad that just melts in your mouth. The club I got was the largest club sandwich I’ve ever had in my entire life. The gigantic cookies are definitely worth the $ 2. They have Indian food as well. Sad story, however: A quarter fell out of my wallet(why the hell am I keeping change in my wallet??). It went under the counter and disappeared. I didn’t feel like asking the cashier to get on his hands and knees to find it. Oh well. I’ll chalk it up to karma telling me that I shouldn’t put change in my wallet(I’m not a chick).

A stop at Chundy’s will definitely be worth your while. I absolutely LOVE the basil chicken salad sandwich and pasta salad. Their bread is fabulous! Try it — you won’t be disappointed!

i love Chundy– if ya’ll didn’t know that’s the owner’s name— such a sweet guy! he’s sweet like his pastries from golden rise bakery— i miss golden rise bakery— but i also like the savory part of it all if u will — - i love the fact that they show they they arent just one-sided—(like breakfast and brunch-) with Chundy’s they show the fact that they are dynamic and can do the savory not just the sweet— but i’m sure whoever has been to golden rise know that they are awesome! i love their pasta salad! i love it! it’s so good!!!

Thank god we have another option on this stretch of Diversey that isn’t a Mexican restaurant or hair salon. The interior is small with a handful of tables. A display case shows off some freshly baked pastries. They have a nice selection of coffee… lattes, expressos, etc. I went with a latte and was happy with the quality of the coffee. I was able to drink my coffee and read the paper without being bothered. A table next to me had a number of the breakfast dishes, and each person raved about how good their food tasted. The owner was very polite and helpful with their questions. I will totally return and try some of the dishes.

ONLY3REVIEWS, yet they have a ‘Yelp Loves Us’ sticker at the entrance!!! Well how can this be… And here is why: My boyfriend and I have been passing Chundy’s ever since it «reopened.» Logan Square/Avondale is happy to have you back! Now the name has become a joke between him and myself. His Mexican family has several words of lingo that they use on a daily basis. One of these is «chones» instead of undies/underwear. Well the name Chundys just seems to fit right in between two… or better yet, reminds me of undies that had an accident in them: X. BUT, we were finally able to visit this Ma & Pa bakery/café today for a weekend breakfast. –Back-up a bit… I believe it may be a One Son joint because a young man seems to run the cash register, cook, clean and take care of everything else– This same fella is the one who I think also updates and runs the wonderful Chundy’s website that they have up. I love that they have all the daily specials posted online and there’s often some nice humor included. Why isn’t every place like this? I saw on their site today’s lunch special however I’ll definitely have to go back because it looked soooo good(Vegetarian Briyani or Chicken Briyani [a seasoned rice dish], cucumber salad, diced potatoes, and other yumminess). Too bad I was in the breakfast mood and did it the Chundy way. Well half-way. By this I mean I ordered it the way I like. You have the simplistic menu written in chalk above, but you can use your own taste buds on practically everything list. A large croissant with an over-medium egg, mushrooms, and bacon *Simply delicious when it comes to my tastes!*. The second half missed out on was the«Fast» service. The window signs boast«Fast & Fresh Gourmet Food,» yet it took quite some time for us to get our sandwiches. Hence why half a star slips away. The friendly and easy-going jack-of-all-trades employee was just doing everything, so I ended up being the friendly door man. And for story #2: Today is the coldest day of the year so far. Wind chill bring us to an Arctic temperature of 20 below. When we got there we thought it was closed in contrast to the hours sign, but don’t be alarmed if this happens to you. Just be patient, someone is on their way to let you in and unfortunately a mystical«Open Sesame» doesn’t work – I tried everything as frozen tears slid down my cheeks. I later found out that Chundy’s door tends to swing open with a strong gust of wind, wasting any heat produced in the small café. So they lock it in between each visitor. However, there were 6 people who entered and left while my boyfriend and I were chilling(literally) and dining. Little me unlocked, opened, closed and relocked the door for each person with a smile. Something needs to be done about this door, PLEASE! –Minus ½ a star. The café’s décor is cute and colorful, but the dining furniture has much to be desired. Other than the tables and chairs being less wobbly, perhaps a little rearrangement would also help. In response to another review, they do now have an Open/Closed neon sign, so that’s a plus! Oh and they now accept credit cards, from what I saw. They have a huge assortment of plates on the wall, hanging paper globe lamps and a gorgeous tin ceiling. After noticing the décor, your eyes lead right to the dessert trays that are enticing enough to make you salivate. I will be back to buy one of their $ 5 loafs of bread which come in Sweet Potato, Cinnamon Apple, 9 grain, wheat and other styles. Looking back, I do seem quite critical but all in all I had a delicious experience at Chundys. Just the more I pronounce/type that word… the more I love it! :-)

I am so glad that this location opened back up! Golden Rise was yummy but Chundy’s is even better. I have visited 3 times since they re-opened and can attest to the deliciosity of their new menu! Everything is fresh and ready to go when you arrive — no waiting around! They have several choices and the menu rotates daily. My favorites so far have been the spiced chickpeas, some sort of sweet potato masterpiece, and this mustardy coleslaw — I forget what it’s called but for the sake of this review, let’s just call it «superawesome». They are also posting their daily menu online — bonus! You can get a big container full of food for $ 9 that will last the average eater at least 2 meals. They also continue to sell their well-known baked goods and pastries and you can special order holiday pies and cakes. And they are selling a small variety of specialty foods from India /Mauritius(which is the owner’s home country). Speaking of which, they are very friendly and we seem to always have some sort of interesting conversation. I hear they are open for breakfast on the weekends which I can’t wait to try! Yum yum. Go there now — you will not be disappointed!

Avondale? I was thinking this was a lovely addition to Logan Square… I love love love Chundys. The owner is super nice and always willing to answer my questions.(Mostly: sooo, what’s that? for every item-I’m sure it’s fun for him) They rotate a dinner/lunch every day so there is always a little bit of variety. For $ 9 I get a main dish, and 3 sides. My boyfriend and I often will split one order, so I feel like the price is right on for the amount and quality of food. Everything is made from scratch and full of flavor. Sometimes the dishes are Indian, but often they are a hodge podge of all that is good. In one week I’ve gotten the best sauteed veggies I’ve eaten in a long time(for real-SO good), chicken pot pie, chicken curry, chick peas, sweet potatoes. All quite delicious. Their pastries are tasty as well. OH, and they have a cute brunch on the weekends. When I went there was french toast, sausage and potatoes, which is nothing to brag about, but if the brunch has as much variety as the dinner menue I’m sure some more exciting food will make its way in. I will say that the honey syrup they used was OUTOFCONTROL it was so good. Hmmm. I’ve given 5 stars because I hope any kinks will be worked out in time.(They only opened a week or so ago) Like, Keep the blinds open or maybe get one of those signs that says OPEN, because sometimes the store doesn’t look too welcoming. The location is not prime, so any sort of inviting sign would be helpful. Oh and since there is coffee served maybe there could be different creamers, like soy or half and half. All I found was creamer powder which will get the job done, but is weird in any case. ha. All in all Chundys=amazing GO to Chundys, you’ll love it. EDIT: They have a website which as the daily menue on it. I just walk there because I like surprises, but check it out
