Four of the five pastries/bread items we purchased were stale and old. I would not recommend this place, unless your dog is hungry.

This is a great little family owned bakery. Everything was fresh and cheap. The pastry and the cookies were very good and the man who runs the bakery(brother of the owner I think he said) was very nice. From my experience with small store front bakeries this is all to be expected. The real reason I’m writing this review is the loaf of magic bread I purchased. It was just a simple fresh baked white loaf right? Initially it seemed so… good sized, delicious, soft. I even thought $ 1.75 was more than reasonable. I got it home, enjoyed a chunk with some soup and left the rest out on the counter. The next day when i realized it was uncovered I figured it was about to become bread crumbs. But I cut the first hard slice off and it revealed ¾ of a loaf of still incredibly soft and delicious bread. After enjoying a slice or two, for the sake of experimentation, I again didn’t cover the remaining bread. It lasted this way for another 3 days. I was shocked. We dubbed it «The Magic Bread.» Good prices. Cool employees. Magic bread. What more could you want?

So good. My mum(who was here for two weeks and saw more of Chicago than I have in 8 months) found this place. Great local panaderia. We stopped by on a Sunday morning and they had just taken some buns from the oven, so they were still all warm and soft.(I know that sounds pervy, sorry). We got a few more things to share and they were all delicious, even though the buns and the pigs ears were my favorite. And of course it was all v. cheap. Haven’t been back yet(falling in love with a bakery thats only a five minute walk from my front door is probably not a smart idea for my waistline) but perhaps some other lazy Sunday I’ll wander down for a warm bun direct from the oven.
