Five Faces Ice Cream Shop

great restaurant one of the best polish joints in chicago. i grew up in chicago and cant believe i never heard of this place. i will be going back to this place more often.

The green chile steak sandwich looked juicy, colorful and flavorful when it came off the grill, and it turned out to be one of the BEST things I’ve eaten in a long time. The steak was perfectly tender, the green chile really gave it flavor, and the tomato/​onion/​pepper etc. added delight to the mix.

You won’t find any stupid ice cream here but you will find some amazing gyros and cheese fries. This is my go to spot when I need my gyro and cheese fry fix. I like to go by myself so I can enjoy the deliciousness with no distractions or interruptions.

Let me give you a little background: so a friend of my wife’s and I said she had been in Chicago and saw a sign that said something about green chile cheeseburgers. She took a picture of the sign but couldn’t really remember where it was (between you and me, I think she was drunk). Anyway, she sent the picture to my wife, who sent it to me. A little image processing, satellite imagery, street view analysis and a few classified algorithms, and I figured out where I thought this place was (not kidding, I worked on this for more time than I should admit). Keep in mind that we’re talking about GREEN CHILE here, so I was willing to call in some favors and do some serious detective work to find this place Chicago. At the end, I found Five Faces on Division.
Five Faces is obviously dedicated to drunk late night food. And that’s a review for another time. Here, I’m really focused on their New Mexican green chile fare.
Skip ahead to me finding Five Faces Ice Cream Shop and heading in. New Mexico Green Chili (sic) cheeseburger and hotdogs? Yeah, I’ll be the judge of that. Fair warning: this place is NOT an ice cream shop. The origin of that name is lost in the mists of time. This place serves a wide array of Greek, Mediterranean, Mexican, and yes, New Mexican (which is neither ‘new’ or ‘mexican’) food. Maybe more.
Okay, so I ask where they get their green chile. «New Mexico» is the answer. Duh. Ok, hit me. I order the green chile hot dog, with onions and mustard, but that’s it. The dog comes out and I give it a tastes.
To my ABQ friends: this is not the best green chile you’re gonna have in your life. But it’s really not bad! I’d say it’s somewhere between a strong mild and a light medium heat. But it is definitely New Mexico green chile. Not crappy diced jalapeño or some such. It is the real deal. I’ll be back to try their green chile cheese burger. Will it be as good as the Owl Bar? Hell no. But, will it keep me from going into withdrawals between my trips back to the Land of Enchantment? I can only hope.
Look — Chicago has some seriously amazing food. But Five Faces has the best shot at real New Mexican chile that I have seen yet. Now, I’ve got to get them to work on the carne adovada and we’ll really have something.

Perfect place for late night food when you know damn well you are going to be hung over after doing Division up right!

Actually have great food for this dive. Late night or whenever its pretty good. Zuchini fries are bomb, best ever! Gyros is the best around, staff is friendly, super fast once your order, you get your food and in and out. I always come back.

WTF — we walked pretty far to come here, pretty late a night. THIS IS NOT AN ICE CREAM SHOP. (Reminded me of a place in Kolkata airport called «Chicago Crust: It’s All About Pizza,» which didn’t serve pizza.) Five Faces sells gyros and fries, and as a consolation, they have McDonalds-​level vanilla soft serve. Otherwise, it’s a dingy dive.

Fried fried and more fried. In fact, there is a box freezer where everything is kept behind the counter.
The fries were not warm and it seems they cook a lot of the more popular items part way and then finish it off when it is ordered.
The dogs at Portillos were far superior as was the chili.
This place is called an ice cream shop but really just has vanilla soft serve with some different flavor syrups.
It seems like this is the perfect place to get some greasy grub after visiting the many bars on the block. Everyone in there during my visit was pretty hammered.

Good for what it is… greasy delicious beef stand food. The falafel burrito is beyond amazing, highly recommended!!!

I came here to eat after 2 hours at Detention across the street and myself and the friends I came with got the munchies and it’s known to frequent clubbers as the place to get food after a night of drinking. I got a double hamburger and some cheese sticks and cheese fries, but I wasn’t too crazy about the cheese fries because I’ve gone to other places and got better cheese fries where the cheese was actually hot going on the fries not squirting cheese on the fries from a bottle. The only issue are people cutting in line when you have to let them know the line starts at the back of the restaurant. The food is better than the places you go to off the Dan Ryan/​Kennedy intersection which was once a part of those mom and pop places on Maxwell Street. They do however should put on the door the line starts at the back so people aren’t cutting in line. They do need to have other flavors of ice cream instead of vanilla or have some way to hand mix different flavors into vanilla ice cream. The food I ordered was pretty good and I’ll definitely come again if I am in the area and want a bite to eat. Just to give you the heads up they do not take credit and debit cards they only accept cash so make sure you carry plenty of it on you and there are no seats so you’ll be standing and eating so wear comfortable shoes and get it to go if you can’t stand very long to eat.

I probably should’ve read the reviews before I came here when people were saying this wasn’t an ice cream shop… because I came here looking for ice cream!
I was utterly disappointed to find that they only had ONE flavor of ice cream and it’s VANILLA… and it’s SOFT SERVE??? WHAT!
Anyway, the background story was that I came here after visiting The Mid on a Monday night (President’s Day). After dancing the night away, I thought that it would be awesome to have some yummy cold ice cream to end the night… but aforementioned I didn’t get any! So my friend ordered a Chicago Dog with a Root Beer float. I think she enjoyed it? While she munches away at her food, two of our guys friends and I sit there and watch her. I keep reading up and down the long list of food items they have. I was actually astonished they had such an extensive list of food items to have at such late at night. But anyway, I ended up ordering their chili. It was about $ 3 and some change (with tax included) for a small bowl. Not bad. The service was really nice though, I’m satisfied with how they handled their customers.
Overall, I’m giving this place 3 stars because i felt like the name was deceitful BUT I really did enjoy their chili. It was spicy, just how I like it! I’d come back in the future for their chili but not for their «ice cream» they seem to be advertising in their name. :\ They should really do something about that!

It is what it is. And what it is is a kinda scary, very greasy spoon that serves greasy goodness well after midnight.
Gal Pal had «cheesy fries», but that yellow goop was NOT cheese. Not that it mattered, as she inhaled the scary mess in seconds, licking her fingers to ensure she didn’t miss any of the $ 4 not-​cheese «stuff».
For the same price, I had a meal of a Chicago dog (Vienna dog with a kosher dill spear, a pickled pepper, tomato and lettuce), a Sprite (don’t let little things like their menu fool you; they do not have lemonade and the worker seemed offended that I let the menu talk me into thinking they would) and not-​cheese-​less fries.
We got what we wanted (greasy stomach coating carbs) when we wanted it (~ 1am), so take the 3 star as what it is, just like the restaurant.

For those of you who have been to Grenwhich Village in NYC, you will note the availability of late night falafel and shwarma samiches, and sometimes bagels with cream cheese.
Here in Chicago we have Five faces for when you are really hungry after a drunken time with your friends at Shenanigans which may or may not involve pole dancing at 2 AM which is about 7 hours before you have to start your presentation at the office the next day :) Ah living in Chicago.
The Gyros are awesome. Yes have as many onions as you want. As a matter of fact bring your own garlic and put chunks of it in there. At 3 AM no one gives a shit about your breath unless you are making a mistake with Mr or Mrs right now then maybe stick with the burger and fries.

The name of this place ended up being pretty deceiving. My friend and I came here expecting to get Ice Cream and some food also but this place ended up being just mostly food.
The food overall was pretty mediocre, reminiscent of something at a non-​chain fast food place. The place is also Cash Only. My friend ended up throwing away most of her Pizza Puff.

Looking for cheap greasy yummy fast food but not craving the usually mcd and BK, u came to the right spot… small place with very limited seating, this place serves up burgers, dogs, fries and wraps which satisfied my tummy… I only got the Vienna hot dog
I was tricked no where did I see ice cream at this place but that was okay

This place is always packed full of drunk people whenever I come here, but the line always moves quickly and the food is always delicious. This place is the perfect place for drunk and late night eats. I’ve only had their carne asada burritos, but that’s enough to keep me coming back. Check it out if you’ve got the drunchies!

This place should definitely get renamed «Five Chins» because that’s how many chins I have after eating there at 2am last night. But guilt aside, it was fantastic. Got the gyro and cheese fries and it was amazing… shoot I really can’t vouch for it sober, but 8 drinks in I give it 5 stars.
No seating inside though so I just go with the walk-​to-​the-​nearest-​curb-​and-​sit move.

Honestly, I’d say the food was decent. But when it’s almost 4am and you’re starving, it’s AWESOME!
They have a really eclectic assortment of foods. Greek, Mexican, American, Italian. You’ll have a hard time not-​finding something you’ll love. Truthfully, I can’t say I remember the experience that well (can you blame me?), but I do remember that if I was in the same place and looking for a late night spot for munchies, I would totally go here again.
Watch out for the CASH ONLY, but they round the prices, which is nice. They must know that people are drunk at that hour, because they were very patient with us when we were confused by the huge menu. There’s not a great sitting area, so it could be good for take-​out during the day.
