Love traditional mexican sweet bread? Look no further than La Baquette. Wanna read spanglish… here goes lol. I love coming here because no matter what time of day you come, you will always see at least 2 or 3 carts full of sweet bread, still stuck on the baking trays. Now thats as fresh as it gets. Traditional mexican bread, biñuelos, puercos, empanadas de camote o de vanilla. Who can forget the infamous conchas de vanilla, chocolate o de fresa. Cookies n their mini cookies. Bolillos y pan de birote y pan para tortas in the plastic bins so that they stay soft throughout the day. Plenty of parking and the women there are always very attentive. **prices have increased dramatically within the last year but still economical.**

I was in the neighborhood, and thought I’d stop by for Mexican sweet treats. This bakery is big and has a decent selection of goodies, but it’s not one of the better ones around. They have way more cookies than I’ve seen at other bakeries, and well… I just don’t go to bakeries looking for a good cookie. They have a few sizes of «bolillos» which are a staple at bakeries, so that’s nice, and they have a loaded glass case with cakes and brownies and other fancy looking desserts. The breads, croissants, and donuts all look good and taste fresh. The workers, though, are kind of awkward and probably not happy to be there. At least, that’s what I got. I smile and said«buenos dias» only to get a grimaces in return. One worker decided she was going to mop through me instead of just waiting three seconds for me to get out of the way. The cashier was pleasant, but just couldn’t keep her eyes off off the novela on the television above. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here again. Considering the neighborhood, there’s bound to be a better bakery close by.

This is one of the first places I stop when I am in Chicago… in fact, sometimes it is my REASON for going to Chicago! I get a craving for the little butter cookies with the sprinkles on top! I love wandering from rack to rack with my tray and tongs and picking out all the wonderful Mexican bakery I can carry. As others have said, the Pastel Tres Leches is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! The store is spotless, bright and well stocked all hours of the day. Be sure to ask for your items in a box instead of bags. You’ll have to pay a minimum amount for boxes, but it worth not getting your cookies crumbled! The parking lot is shared with other businesses in the strip mall next to it and it can be challenging to find a spot. KEEPTRYING!

I was craving some Mexican for lunch, so a friend suggested I pick up a «Torta». The place he sent me to was in a strip mall off of 26th and Kedzie. I don’t read or speak Spanish, so I just pointed at a Torta that looked good. I still don’t know what was inside the sandwich, but it was delicious. They also provide some green salsa which was spectacular on the sandwich. This place is a must try if your ever in the area.

A friend brought me to La Baguette, and I cannot thank him enough. They have a great selection of freshly baked Mexican breads, pastries, and cakes. I ended up leaving with 6 items for $ 4.50! I will not do a diservice and butcher the names of each pastry, but I can speak to each being delicious! Note: $ 5 min for credit cards The tortas offered at the restaurant looked delicious. A great stop when passing through or visiting the Little Village.

An extremely authentic Mexican bakery. Its so authentic, most people here do not speak English. The baked goods/pastries are displayed openly(not covered in glass) but do not have labels so you have no idea what you are looking at. What you see is what you get, unless you take it home to find out whats inside what you bought. You can try your lucky by asking someone here what the pastry is made of or what the inside filling is. I bought an apple turnover, a butterfly cookie, and some other flaky pastry covered in cinnamon and sugar. All of it was delicious and only cost me $ 2.40!!! They have many cakes for special occasions and chocolate covered fruits here like a typical bakery. They accept credit cards here but require a $ 5 minimum charge. The one thing I didnt like was that I saw a few flies flying around that sometimes landed on the pastries. Needless to say I didnt buy THOSE pastries. I dont know if the flies ever got to my items but nothing a little nuking in the microwave couldnt solve!

I decided to polish off my charbroiled chicken from Pollo Feliz with tres leches cake from La Baguette. For $ 3.25 you get a well portioned, square sized cake. As far as bakeries go, I think this location has the best tres leches. However, Kristoffer’s and El Ranchito are still on the top of my list. Besides cakes, they have an eyeful of bread and pastries. I also tried the donut but it was pretty bad. So after trial and error of other Mexican bakeries, I’m gonna conclude I’m not a huge fan of Mexican pastries in Chicago. Gonna stick to the items in the show room fridgerated section.

I stopped in here on my way somewhere in La Villita, after having seen several of La Baguette’s other locations for years, but never having gone in. This location is especially interesting because the building is divided between the bakery on the right, and a restaurant on the left, serving tacos, platillos(full dinners), and specializing in tortas named after Mexican soccer teams(and the«Super Tortas» named after Mexican and international star players). As tempting as the tortas sounded, I only had time to grab some sweets, so I took my tray and tongs and scanned the full selection before making my decision. This location is smaller than the other locations of La Baguette that I’ve seen, but they still have the full selection of favorites. I got a couple churros, some bunuelos, and a few polvorones de nuez. All were very, very good. Being that it was a burning hot day and I wasn’t going straight home, I didn’t get anything out of the refrigerated case. I did look to see what they had, and might have actually gasped when I saw the lychee pastel de tres leches. I am very well-versed when it comes to tres leches, but have never seen lychee anywhere. Two of my favorite things in one place… it killed me not to be able to bring a slice home. I talked to a friend from out of town later that night about La Baguette, and it turns out that this is his favorite torta place in Chicago, and visits it every time he’s here. I plan on coming back soon to try the tortas(La Memo Ochoa or La Rafa Marquez?), and am looking for an excuse to get the lychee tres leches.

Years ago, someone brought a tres leches cake from La Baguette to a party and I loved it! It was the first time I tried tres leches, and I was instantly hooked. This is the original location for La Baguette, which has branched out to several other locations in Chicago. It’s a Mexican bakery with everything from bread to Mexican pastries to birthday cakes. But definitely try their tres leches cake.
