This place should be called the Crouching Samgyeopsal Hidden Storefront. Why do we go? Samgyeopsal(Pork Belly) How I am the first to review? Hidden Storefront. But if you want good pork belly –maybe the best in Chicago… then get your stretchy pants on and head on over. :LOCATION: Ok, so the place has remnants of a café diner-turned sushi bar-turned mob hangout-turned to a bootleg mom & pop korean kitchen. Make sure you keep your eye out for this place, because the storefront is completely unassuming and may look empty. Still with me? Good. Because you WON’T regret the thick cuts of lightly dry seasoned pork belly sizzling on your table grill. :SAMGYEOPSAL: MUST have here. Orders come big enough for 2 people for $ 28. You cook your own meat like a traditional Korean BBQ, and the pork belly they use is an excellent cut that is tender but meaty. Once you get that nice light brown edge crisp on both sides… Dip that bad boy into the oil/salt mixture, wrap in some lettuce(if thats how you roll), and then indulge. Bonus Levels: –Grill up some garlic and jalapenos, too. –And cold beer/soju is extra excellent with grilled pork belly. :BANCHAN: You get that real homemade feel for all of the side dishes the mom(in the mom & pop) makes. She produces a nice lightness to the kimchi, cucumber kimchi, bean sprouts, sauteed eggplant, odeng, and so on. It is a wonderful coupling to the loving amount of pork being consumed. And for the first timers, yes all these side dishes are complimentary with meat orders. :KIMCHIJIGGAE: I’m not a huge fan of it in general, but this place does it well. It has a kimchi-spicy broth with the typical players: kimchi, tofu, that delicious pork, bean sprouts, onions, scallions, etc. If you need a soup fix, then it’s worth a slurp. Now, I just need to figure out how to handle my pork withdrawals.
