This statue of the late president, Abraham Lincoln, stands proud as a homage to «The Great Emancipator». This statue was erected October 16, 1956 and is located on Lincoln, Lawrence and Western Avenues in Lincoln Square. The statue was sculpted by Dr. Avard Fairbanks, a prolific 20th-century American sculptor known for being a protégé of the sculptor of Mount Rushmore. «Free society is not, and shall not be a failure,» reads an inscription on the statue in Lincoln’s own words. This was quoted from Lincoln himself during a visit to Chicago on December 10, 1856. Whether you are driving, walking or biking pass this historic landmark you can not help but see Lincoln and all his marvel… and marble too! You may see people sitting down around the statue taking in all his beauty or you may see bums, burn-outs, people dressed like The Statue Of Liberty(what a coincidence!) or friendly Chicagoans waiting for the bus. This little landmark may even make a great place for a picnic or a family BBQ. If you are taking a stroll through Lincoln Square someday stop and bask in the wonderful greatness of this statue. With such a great story and an amazing history this statue is definitely a gem within Lincoln Square. Brush up with your history or with some stranger next to you and make us all proud of our state’s slogan, «Land Of Lincoln.»
