The lines are extra long, so be prepared to wait. Not sure I like the cafeteria style serving… but it is an interesting experience. The restaurant has a lot of seating and is pretty clean given the amount of traffic. The quality of food is comparable to a buffet… but I think it looks much better than it actually tastes. I’d choose 6978(which is also soul food and about 10 minutes from MacArthur’s) over this restaurant any day.

Lived in Chicago all my life, but this is the first time at Macarthur’s. Honestly was disappointed. The line moved slowly because the ckerks couldn’t keep up. I had under cooked baked chicken – runny & red. Mashed potatoes stiff & entire meal was cold. Will not go back. I wanted to like it.

Foods good, but sometime the service can be slow and poor. Just tried to order a cake over the phone, nearly impossible.

Everyday is thanks giving at Mac Arthur’s my first choice hands down for soul food they have a clean area they cook their food in and they have a nice setting with all the celebrity picture on the wall which doesn’t make the wait in line so long. This is a nice place to go out on a date and leave satisfied with the service.

I don’t eat this type of food very often, but my family caters from MacArthur’s sometimes for family functions. They do fried chicken very well, along with their mac & cheese. I’m not a huge fan of sweet potatoes or yams, yet I do like a little sweet on my plate and theirs are good as well… candied. Their greens are always cooked well, but lack flavor. Same with the beef ribs. They don’t use any sauce, yet I noticed that they are always very tender and the meat almost falls off the bone. Once I use black pepper and hot sauce to spice my plate up a bit, I enjoy it. This is a welcomed treat every few months.

I wavered between 3 and 4 stars for MacArthur’s, but just on the fact that there are so few soul food spots in Chicago, I decided to go with 4. Overall the food is real good — not as good as my mother-in-law’s, but still worth it. The fried chicken was decent; the ribs were super tender and delicious. The yams, my go to side for soul food, were great but less sweet and more spiced. The mac and cheese was good but a little on the bland side. Peach cobbler was yummy — also more spiced than sweet. Plus it’s fast and reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit.

The food was DELICIOUS! I had fried chicken, catfish, collards and yams. I am the type that needs salt and pepper on everything but I didn’t even touch it for this meal! My only complaint is that the place looked outdated, it wasn’t dirty, actually clean but just needs an upgrade. Pictures on google from 2010 showed a beautiful shining, brightly lit restaurant and it wasn’t like that. The only other thing is that there were no signs that indicated what each dish was. The pics from 2010 had signs, that would of been very helpful. There was also no posted menu with options and pricing. I just moved here from Boston and this was my first soul food visit in Chicago, I definitely will be back.

Nothing but great experiences each time I go to this restaurant. Of course, going on Sunday afternoons are going to be a bit busy. If you go during the week, the lines seem to move fast and the servers behind the counter make sure to give you plenty of food. Love going to this place each time I visit Chicago.

MacArthur’s is a cafeteria-style restaurant that serves up Southern food. I was a little disappointed at first, as I thought it was an AYCE: P Some friends and I came here for a late-night grub, and we were all pretty excited in trying this place out. There was a long line, which I thought was a good indication on the food. I tried their smothered chicken, covered in gravy(the chicken was juicy, had great batter, a nice crunch, and yummy with the hot sauce), the macaroni and cheese(it was too mushy in texture and really bland), and corn(just a bowl of regular corn niblets). The corn bread that came with the platter was more on the dry side. I’d like to come back and try out their meatloaf, baked chicken, the seasonal yams, and the collard greens. +smothered chicken

Solid soul food… know what you want because the lady behind the counter will take no shi* from anyone… don’t know what you want and… No Soul Food for You!!! Menu changes everyday so come often to try other dishes. Fried Chicken… nice and crispy, juicy and full of flavor… one of the best I had. BBQ Ribs… not as advertised… no sauce, but was in a liquid(mostly its own fat)…just ok… but will not order again. Sides: Candies Yams **** Spaghetti *** Collard Greens **** Mac & Cheese *** Potato Salad ** Peach Cobbler *** Banana Pudding **** Green Beans ****

I am sad to read such negative reviews. I have had great meals here. It is my favorite Soul Food in Chicago hands down. I try to go healthy, yes I know it defeats the point, but I love that it can be done here. Broiled catfish is juicy and flavorful. I love the mac and cheese. Not too greasy but just enough so. Great greens. Yams are sweet but less so than at other places. I like that they don’t dress them up with all kinds of fruity flavors or cinnamon. Cornbread is nothing to write home about and the corn bread dressing was just too heavy, flavorless, and gritty for my likings. But the rest of my dish made me smile. This is a great place to bring a family. Good kid friendly seating. The line was flowing nicely. The place is clean and extremely affordable.

So sad someone told this person they could cook, please. Just because your family tells you can cook does not mean you can cook for the public. whoever is cooking this food may be a good cook(not great or awesome) for thier family does not mean you have the ability to cook for large number of folks. this food is swimming in grease all of it. No seasonings, NONE.

I just can’t believe how this Chicago staple went down the way has! Smothered pork chops are dry they didn’t have any greens and the staff was rude! It breaks my heart!

Ordered Short Ribs they were ok. Black eyed peas had no flavor, mac and cheese was mediocre. No kids menu for my 5 year old daughter had to pay full price so she could play over food. No prices for dinner posted. Fried chicken was really good tho. Ran out of sweet potatoes(10min wait) and greens(2 hour wait) @ 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon. WTF?! If you want some better soul food go to Pricilla’s in Hillside just about 10 minutes away with no traffic.

MMMMMMM!!! My whole family loves this place! I never mind waiting in that long line because I know once I get to that display case it is going down! I only ever order a combination the same things. I also like to base my reviews on the cleanliness of a restaurant because I am very critical of filthy restaurants regardless how good the food or their reputation is and MacArthur’s is CLEAN! –Fried Chicken –Baked Chicken –Mac and Cheese –Greens –rice n beans –PEACHCOBBLER!!!(You will lick the spoon) I hate peaches. I would never just be sitting there eating a peach. But their peach cobbler is so good I have it every time I go! It is super rich and sweet so I always get the small and it leaves me very satisfied. I will always be a fan and a regular

Throughly enjoyed my meal here. Yes, the area may be a tad rough, but of course the hidden gems usually are the hardest to find. The price was very affordable for what I got. I ordered a breast, two legs, macaroni & cheese, collard greens(comes with a piece of cornbread) and a bottle juice and only spent $ 9. What a deal! The food was so delicious and definitely filling. Cured my hangover right up. The mac & cheese was a bit drippy, but good nonetheless. I definitely WILL be coming back!

I’ve been to MacArthur’s several times, and I’ve never had anything I disliked. With that being said I will tell you what they do well: Collard Greens Macaroni and Cheese Candied Sweets Fried Chicken Beef Short Ribs Meatloaf Cornbread Peach Cobbler The service is cafeteria style, the ambiance is casual family-dining(think Naugahyde booths), clean, and bright. Since the remodel they have a private room or two, and outdoor seating. The more«special» offerings vary based on the day of the week, but some standards are available daily. There is almost always a long line, but they efficiently move you on through.

Good price. Ok food. Greens had a weird unneeded flavor. Mac and cheeee was ok… not very cheesy nor was it real cheese… it was american cheese. Smothered chicken was good. Smothered pork chop was ok. Yams… too sweet.
