MJ’s Barbershop

I’m at MJ’s watching him shave me. There’s a feather stuck in the edge of the mirror and I ask him what it’s for and he tells me a delightful story about how he saved an injured pigeon but I don’t buy it. That feather is a symbol: This guy has a feather touch.
Look, you need to listen to me here. I’m an overbooked, stressed out, everything at the last minute professional. I don’t have time to tell you I don’t have time. I never stop. I’m a busy man.
So I live for life’s little luxuries, even when, sometimes, I have to build them into my schedule myself. Sometimes when I tell my wife and family I’m «in a meeting,» I’m actually at my favorite cigar shop smoking something from the Drew Estate.
Or I’m getting a shave.
A hot shave is a modern luxury I will not give up under any circumstances. If armageddon happens and we all end up like the walking dead, and people are looting groceries and liquor stores, I’m going to back a truck up to a barber shop and fill it up so at the end of a day of looting and fighting off our android overlords, I’ll still be able to get a decent shave. Like French cuffs and 21 year old Scotch, there are some luxuries that aren’t luxuries. They’re necessities.
So trust me when I say I’ve been all over Chicago looking for the perfect shave. And trust me when I say you cannot beat the shave you’ll get at MJs.
I fell asleep under the hot towels and MJ’s deft touch. I woke up with a face so smooth I wondered if I’d gone through reverse puberty. My wife won’t stop kissing me. I look great, I feel great, and I smell great.

Can a Black Man get a good haircut in Logan Square? The answer is sadly no. But he can travel just a bit west and see MJ. Brand new and still under construction. I walked in was offered a beverage (declined), he began by asking me what I wanted and how I wanted the cut. Important because I can’t have a razor line. The most important thing for me in a cut is get the lines correct and making sure that I’m clean all the way around. MJ excels, no stray hairs to report. He is professional, amiable, pleasant, and inexpensive. Now’ there are shops in Logan Square that cut hair, but I don’t want spend time with home boys and loud music. I prefer a professional with skill. Clean and quick with a happy ending to boot (get your mind out of the gutter!) he finished with a head and neck massage. Will return.
