What happened??? I went in for my beloved boxed lunch yesterday, and it went all wrong. First off, the box was not actually assembled, and there seemed to be a ton of confusion behind the counter as to what exactly was supposed to happen, which really gets in the way of the entire grab ‘n go concept of a boxed lunch. Then they told me that I was going to get a cookie with my box, and I told them I really didn’t want the cookie(the piece of fruit for dessert instead of a cookie is actually one of the biggest selling points of their boxes for me). Blank stare. Fine, just give me the cookie, I’ll give it away. After a few more minutes of throwing stuff in the box, I noticed there was no olive oil. I asked for some, and they went off to «try to find some». They didn’t have a lid for the little cup they were going to put it in, was that okay? Well, I have a six block walk to the office, so no. Blank stare. Dejected, I said that I would not be taking the lunch — and she rang me up anyway. Not really having the energy to argue, I took the lunch, but bought a tuna sandwich from my favorite coffee shop by my office to eat instead. Later on, I thought I’d give the demi baguette a try, so it wouldn’t be a total loss. It was totally undercooked and wet all the way thru the middle. I know there are a lot bigger problems out there, but this was my favorite, consistent, dependable pick-me-up and make me smile lunch, and instead it had me fuming all afternoon.

I went to the French Market at Randolph and Clinton, and came across the Necessity Baking Co. They had a big glass case full of fresh baked breads. They looked just delicious, soft and fresh. I bought the huge round roll topped with baked cheddar and little bacon bits. And by huge, I mean about 6 inches wide, and 2.5 inches tall. DELISH! I believe it was about $ 8 for the humungo roll– and worth it. It lasted about 2 days. I will be back to the French Market– and specifically to top by this counter. The ladies serving were especially nice as well.
