I am on a quest to visit every branch of the Chicago Public Library system. I’ve passed this branch a few times on the bus. It’s part of a strip, not a standalone building. There are no iron-casted letters to denote it as a library. Instead, this library has window clings that spell out the name. This makes the library look kind of bleak from the outside.(And makes me wonder why they don’t have more legitimate signage.) Since this branch IS part of a strip, there isn’t much room inside. There is a designated place for people with laptops(two tables against a wall, atop which sit two power strips). The children’s area is large and full of children: this means a bit of a louder library. A shelf of DVDs and CDs separate the adult and children’s sections; there is a wide variety of DVDs, and a decent CD collection as well. Aside from the two designated laptop user tables and the waiting table for those waiting to use the express internet computer, there is only one table in the adults section. The internet access computers are in a small room with a window(and they look eternally busy). I snuck a peek at the meeting room, and it looks like a pretty big space! All the doors(including the bathroom) had printed out signs, which was just a little odd for a government building. This seems like a very busy branch, with a lot of kids and, overall, is a little bleak. How about a fresh paint job or at least some legitimate signage in and outside of this branch? Maybe something a little less crappy looking than power strips on top of tables? I hope a standalone in building is in the works for this branch because the librarians and patrons deserve a better space.
