I have been around the block, and catch a lot of the references in the murals inside this great space. For a while when it first opened, I wasn’t sure about it, but in my last leg of time in the Chi, I was a regular. Lots of great fundraisers, benefit shows, art receptions, youth group events, and basic fun was had here. There’s such a variety of young folks that check this space out. But not too young: they are as strict at carding at the front as I’ve seen in a space, and making sure you pay that cover that either goes to a cause or keeping the space itself open. But I’ve seen plena and bombazo, Rebel Diaz’ hip hop and Los Vicios De Papa ska, afro-beat and spoken word. And danced too many hours into too many nights.

Think urban. Think art. Quennect4 is a Humboldt Park art gallery hosting non-profit events, open mic nights and political discussions. The gallery throws bi-weekly open mics on Thursday nights dubbed 20khz /20mhz featuring local rappers, freestylers, spoken word artists and DJs. I have seen Afro-Cuban bands, reggae DJs, and people reading their poetry here. Unique art made by local arts adorn the walls and when the gallery is holding an event often they have a projector on showing a random film while people all roam around. In the basement there are couches and chairs and plenty of room to dance if the music makes your feet move. They have fans to blow when it gets too hot as it often does on a sweltering summer night. Often events here have a suggested donation for non-profit causes and ID is required at the door. Events generally last from 10pm-2am and the crowd is an eclectic mix of people with heavy hipster concentration. A fine and inexpensive way to spend an evening, but I’d be careful walking past the liquor store nearby as there is usually a crowd of five to ten people standing right outside.
