Great food and wonderful family environment! We had the burgers and they were amazing. Great place to go after the Lincoln park zoo

We live about an hour out of the city and was visiting the Lincoln Park Zoo. This was our first time visiting this restaurant. Definitely not our cup of tea. Extremely crowded. A lot of young children(understandable since it’s right across from the zoo) Our waitress was slow. The burgers were mediocre. I had the salad bar and was grossed out when witnessing a woman and her child licking their fingers and then touching the utensils to fetch their veggies. They did it like five times. Ew. However, I did love the $ 5 special on wine. It was much needed.

Long time customer, first time reviewer. Have been here many times with my family growing up and now living around the corner is dangerous! The set up is really cool. You get an old chicago feel as soon as you walk in and it’s awesome. There’s a lot of history with Grunts. As many times as I’ve been here, everything has always been top notch. The service is great, the beer/drink menu is real good, and the food is killer. An absolute must if you consider yourself a true Chicagoan.

Went on a Tuesday night at 8:30pm and had no trouble getting a table. Skipped the salad bar but went for the cup of French onion soup($ 3.50) and a veggie burger with housemade cottage chips($ 10.95). The burger and chips were heaping portions– you’ll have leftovers! Our waiter was very helpful with recommendations and even brought out a complimentary ice cream dessert, which made our night. Will be back again!

A classic, 70, s bar and restaurant atmosphere. Tons of personality ooze from it’s dated décor. It’s unpretentious and family friendly. Nothing fancy, innovative, upscaled, conceptual here. It has something for everyone. Burgers, wings, sandwiches, and Shakes, etc. And of course an old school salad bar. Don’t expect to be blown away by the food, but it should satisfy most people just looking for a cool comfortable place to grab a bite in Lincoln Park.

The original Lettuce Entertain You restaurant… a highly successful group of Chicago based restaurants. There are pictures of all their employees adoring the walls. I liked it! I have tried this place twice in the last week. The French onion soup was good, but the bread should have been grilled or, at least, not just a soggy piece of dough in the middle of the soup. The next visit, I ordered a patty melt that was really well made: juicy and delicious. They’re known for the«all you can eat» salad bar, but I was not that hungry. There are a lot of up charges for alternatives to what is offered; making one feel as though they worked a little too hard to up the bill. The service was very good, however, and they did offer a $ 4 sangria special that was good. Overall, this is a historic, Chicago restaurant that is in serious need of remodeling or, minimally, a serious scrubbing and menu revamp.

Absolutely the worst service that I’ve experienced in the last 2 months living in LP. The only reason it’s getting 2 stars is that we were seated along window along Lincoln Park West. Waited 10 minutes before being acknowledged; almost 15 minutes before receiving drinks — the ice had melted quite a bit, so you could tell they had been sitting on the bar for awhile; the food was cold when it came out; and we had exactly 3 interactions with server — taking order, bringing food, and getting check. I know when the bar or kitchen are to blame and when it’s on the server. This one was on the server.

We came here recommended by someone we met at a Store on our last day in Chicago. When we asked for the best food to finish our trip he said RJ Grunts was the best burguer on earth, and he was right. Delicious burguers. Totally worth the price.(which is kinda high) The ambience is nice and it was crowded on a sunday afternoon, they have a salad bar which I found great. The service was kinda slow but I noticed there weren’t many servers and the food wasn’t too fast either but it was so good we forgot about it. Also they make their own chips and they’re yummy too. And they have photographs in the walls of old servers that used to work there, pretty awesome!

The OG Lettuce Entertain You spot! Food here is decent. Their salad bar is awesome, but I can’t stand how slow the service can be here at times. For food, I recommend their Mr. Chicken sandwich. Think of an Italian beef but with tender juicy roasted chicken. Be sure to dip often in au jus it comes with and load on the giardiniera. I would definitely recommend upgrading for a buck to french fries rather than the house chips that come on the side. Not a big fan of the chips at all. Other than that, don’t forget those lettuce cards to rack up them points! ‘Til next time, cheers!

Trendy, hipster, farm-to-table, upscale are adjectives that do not describe RJ Grunts. I’m not sure who RJ is and why he is grunting but I am sure he won’t be after having a good satisfying meal here and being served by Norma. They just might have to rename the place RJ Happy AF! This place is kind of old, dusty, and outdated which seems to sit perfectly fine with them and their customers. Nothing fancy or hair-raising here just good solid comfort food that will make your overgrown belly sing. Here you will see many seniors, familys, the after church crowd. A good healthy mix of people. The food is mostly bar food type. Burgers, Tacos, wings etc but with what I hear is an exceptional salad bar. I didn’t try it but boy was that thing pretty. My meal consisted of a Mr. Chicken, which is essentially a French Dip but with chicken. Very tasty I liked it. Fresh bread, good chicken, well seasoned Au Jus. The fries were above average, better than I expected. Nice touch! Now let’s talk about that Chocolate Banana Malt. This was absolutely exceptional! One of the best foods/drinks that I have had in 2016. It took a while to make but wow was this thing a sight to behold. Very rich chocolaty taste with a hint of banana. So amazingly good and they give you practically 3 glasses full as it is served in one of those shaker tins. It might not be for everybody as it is very thick and rich but it certainly was for me. The service was also amazing. Norma was our server. Rarely am I blown-away by a server, but this day I was. Norma’s professionalism, knowledge, and mannerisms were refreshing and a pure joy to experience. I felt safe in knowing all my needs were in good hands. She has a bright future regardless of what she chooses to do. If RJ’s sees this please extend my gratitude to her for her exceptional service and reward her. She is an outstanding asset to the company. I am very much looking forward to coming back!

A great happy hour deal. Half off appetizers and cocktails before 6pm Monday-Friday. You get a lot of food too. Their menu is standard bar fair but they make sure to do everything very well. We had the Buffalo chicken nachos and BBQ Wings. Too much food for two people. I would like to come back to try a burger.

The OG Lettuce Entertain You Restaurant! I just love this place. It’s down to earth, has its own dose of character, and arguably«what you see is what you get.» Upscale diner food, and options for the soup and salad bar. Honestly, the soup and salad bar is literally THE reason I come here. I grew up on Souplantation(here called Sweet Tomatoes) and it LITERALLYKILLSME that there isn’t one in the city. Getting seated here can be a hit or miss. Since it’s so family friendly, sometimes they do get SLAMMED. So i always put down an open table. My favorite things? Chicken dip with a soup and salad add on(really just $ 2 – 3 extra for the add on). PS; the open table is a little hard to find. The name is listed under«R J Grunts» vs. «RJ Grunts»

We started eating here 25 years ago but haven’t been back since moving to California a number of years ago. Went back on Friday night and must say it’s as good as ever. We were seated in a window table overlooking Lincoln Park which was beautiful. The salad bar is so wonderful an fresh, great drinks, HUGE portions and so reasonably priced.

got it delivered to office from uberEATS, i liked the service speed so when it got here it is still hot. i got the veggie instead of the cottage fries, it definitely made the plate look healthier. i liked the patty, tasty but not overwhelmingly oily, the cheese melt is awesome too.

Lettuce Entertain You generally sets the bar high, and so I was excited to try out their original restaurant, RJ Grunts. However, my boyfriend and I left feeling unimpressed. We had an 8:00 reservation, but when we arrived, we still had to wait about five minutes in their crowded entrance area, though they were quoting 10 – 15 minute waits to walk-ins. We were then seated at a table that was extremely close to several other parties, to the point where I felt like I needed to be cognizant of not bumping into the man behind me while eating and drinking. We were also right next to the salad bar, which led to a lot of traffic from people using the dressings on the edge of the bar. The food was decent; I had a burger and the chips, which were good but nothing amazing. My boyfriend did love the wings he ordered, though, and Merkt’s cheddar is an excellent complement to fries! Unfortunately, the service was also lackluster, and our drinks sat empty for about ten minutes while we tried to flag down the waitress for another round to enjoy while finishing our meals. The ambiance is fun; very 1970s but still well done. TL;DR: I’ve seen much better from Lettuce Entertain You. Slow service, decent food, nothing special.

We came here after visiting the Field Museum today. Valet parking is $ 12 or try to find somewhere to park(good luck). We walked in to the restaurant and it was pretty crowded. Fortunately about 5 minutes before we got there I made a reservation on open table so we had no wait. The restaurant isn’t very large and the tables are wedged in. It has a cool vibe with lots of good, 70’s music along with signs and pics on the wall. They brought us a carafe of water which is always a big plus in my book! We only sat there a couple of minutes before our server stopped by to get our drink orders. Three of us stuck with water but my hubby got an Almanac Horchata Stout. I ordered the weekend buffet, my son ordered the kids hot dog and fries, my husband ordered a burger and my daughter got the buffalo chicken sandwich. It was all good. My husbands burger was cooked just the way he requested but he thought it was just ok. My daughter thought the buffalo sauce was a little sweet but she loved the homemade chips. I enjoyed the potato soup on the salad bar along with the bacon and bread pudding French toast but thought the salad bar part was just ok. When we got our bill my husbands beer ended up costing $ 12 which is way too much! I’m glad we finally got to eat there but doubt we’ll return. It’s not bad, it’s just not that memorable.

I have been going here since 1972. The menu and the ambiance are a throw back to the early 1970’s(in a good way.) The burgers, fries, French onion soup, impeccably maintained salad bar(a welcome change from the 1970s when we were all too stoned to care), and the milkshakes are what one comes here for. Busy and crowded but the service is excellent. Kudos to the woman that maintained the cleanliness and freshness of the salad bar, during the afternoon of February 6, 2016. She was so focused and dedicated that I thanked her. I got the impression, by her humble gratitude, that no one has done this for awhile. This place is the rare restaurant that can serve the same menu, for over 40 years, with no loss of quality. I’m happy that sone good things don’t change. And let’s not forget the music! The 1970s are alive and well, from Brother Marvin to the Eagles with everything in between. As the Bee Gees’ once said, this place is «staying alive.»

Came here for the restaurant week deal since wings + burger + dessert is a guy’s dream. Plus I came right before the Patriots vs Broncos game so I had some good NFL highlights while I chowed down awww yiss. Place has a real cool vibe since they have their cartoon thing going on, pretty respectable. The wings are crispy and good — I got the hottest buffalo and it was pretty hot, Pretty sure I only refilled my water three times, so 8:3 wings to water ratio means its pretty spicy. Wings were on a bed of onion rings which was a nice surprise, so I started off the course with great wings which basically filled me to begin with. As for the burger, I got the Yowza burger which was cooked to a perfect medium(see pics!). It was a great burger(re: bacon), but I was not a fan of the spicy ketchup. Try this burger but hold the spicy ketchup(or get it on the side?) and you’ll probably like it more. I was pretty impressed that the burger was a great shape, definitely an 8oz packed burger. The burger bun is a little wimpy though, but it’s better than a 300 calorie pretzel bun… Ended with a milkshake to go, which was pretty awesome. I couldn’t finish this all in one sitting, my stomach was about to burst halfway through the burger/fries. I’d definitely recommend this place — tons of food options and the burgers are cooked to your preference. Would definitely come back if I’m in the area.

We ate here for lunch. As we walked in, we were treated by very friendly staff. They seated us instantly to a private booth. We sat near the salad bar and I couldn’t help but notice how good it looked. It was amazing how clean and fresh the entire salad bar was. We weren’t in the mood for salad though, we had a direct recommendation to try the buffalo chicken nachos. OMG, they are amazing. Trust me and just get them. There is enough for 2 people and this wound up being all my wife ate for lunch. I however, had a hickory hamburger with home made chips. The chips are awesome. Ive had homemade chips before, but these were different(I can’t explain how, but again, just get them you won’t be disappointed). The burger was very juicy, perfectly cooked, and on a warm bun. We were both extremely pleased with this place. Next time we are in Chicago we will eat here again.

Stopped in for lunch by a recommendation from a friend that lived downtown Chicago. It was a quick Über ride from downtown Michigan Ave. When we arrived we were seated right away. The waitress was very helpful and made great recommendations. We ordered buffalo chicken nachos and my husband got the hickory burger with the homemade«chips». Everything’s by tasted amazing!!! Strongly recommend!

Given the wait for Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder was 90 minutes, my girlfriend and I walked to RJ Grunts. No wait for a table at 6 on a Saturday night was great. However, they goofed up a burger order(asked for no mayo and it arrived swimming in mayo) the sweet potatoe fries were left over from lunch, and the buns were stale. The server was apologetic, but they had to re-cook my dates burger so she got to watch me eat. No offer of knocking $ off the tab or a comp desert/beer. Never again.

I can’t believe after all these years and so many visits to grunts, I have yet to leave a review. We stopped in after a night at Zoo lights and it was slammed but we managed to snag two seats at the bar thankfully. The bartender Tim was great and getting our drinks so fast and also making some great recommendations for food. We both got the soup and salad bar which is pretty standard fare but I will say that the cream of chicken rice soup was absolutely perfect for a chilly night warm up. After the salad bar we split the peppercorn burger it was grilled to perfection flavorful and super juicy. I love the whole vibe at grunts, it reminds me what Chicago was like in the eighties kind of like the movie«About Last Night» just a fun chill vibe with good eats, aChicago staple.

I really like this place! The service is friendly and quick, the food is your general American fare(done deliciously), and the décor is unique. Apparently the many photos on the walls are those of prior waitresses. Our waitress had started at age 34 and worked at the restaurant for 35 years! She showed us her picture and she was a beaut!

Great food and service. My son really enjoyed the«world famous» cheese burger and tried to finish it off. In particular about tuna melts and was pleasantly surprised rJ grunts offered 3 melts with 3 different types of cheese(cheddar, pepper jack, and Swiss) and I added fresh steamed broccoli. The broccoli was not mushy :0). We even tried the buffalo wings which were tasty too. Overall good experience!

This place reminds me of Max & Erma’s but with a salad bar instead of a sundae bar. Both times I’ve come I got the bottomless salad and been extremely happy with my choice. The salad bar comes with multiple kinds of lettuce, lots of fresh veggies, pasta salads, tuna & potato salads, fresh(ish) fruit, and then soups(veggie minestroni + the gumbo were both delicious). The last visit– I also expanded and tried the sweet potato fries — good, crispy, and salty, the cottage chips(AMAZING), and a mushroom swiss burger. The burger was fine, however as the burgers are one of the things they’re known for– I was actually a bit disappointed. I think I‘d stick to something else for my next visit if I didn’t just get the salad. Servers have always been great. I would definitely recommend reservations though– this place gets crowded!

11 years ago my hubby and I had one of our first dates here. I remember seeing a beautiful family with beautiful kids, and I told myself I want that life! Today we brought our beautiful boys here, BUT, I don’t remember my hubby EVER mentioning that two of his prior girlfriends had their photos hanging on the wall. Ha! RJ Grunts is legendary and has been around forever. And, those girlfriends on the wall are former servers from a long time ago… a REAL long time ago. Sure, it’s a little pricey, and I agree with Lisa A about the salad bar, but I also think their food is top quality. Aside from my vegetarian hubby who doesn’t eat cheese, the rest of us ordered up cheeseburgers. When I asked the waitress whether I should get the pulled pork sandwich or the burger, she really stood by the burger. It was a great option. There is no cheeseburger on the kids menu, so the boys ordered off the grown up menu, and the portion size for a nine year old growing boy was perfect. Each of the burgers came with homemade cottage fries(potato chips). I ordered a burger with smoked bacon and provolone cheese. The only thing my hubby could order, since he didn’t want the salad bar, was a small bowl of veggie chili. It was actually delicious and hearty, but more like an appetizer size. Clean restaurant, clean bathrooms, great service, cool artwork by Peter Max above our table, and a view of all the pretty people living in the area :-)

Ordered delivery via GrubHub and food came at a decent time(~40 min), which was actually earlier than the eta. We got the Pickle Fries, Tangy BBQ Wings(8pc), Yowza Burger, and the Sunday special of the Dixie Fried Chicken. The fried pickles and the wings were definitely the standouts. The breading on the pickles was perfect and crispy and nicely seasoned. I did not expect the wings to be fried and the sauce to come separately, but I understood it and they were yummy. They really got their breading down here. The fried chicken was pretty decent but not worth roughly $ 19. It did come with mashed potatoes and cole slaw and neither were that great. The burger was quite lackluster. The accompanied fries were very sad and reminiscent of limpy cafeteria fries. The spicy ketchup however was delicious and addicting. Overall, for food alone, I wouldn’t mind trying some other options, but their chicken wings and fried pickles so far is where it’s at.

I had never heard of this restaurant but I received a gift certificate so I decided to take my grandbaby and niece as a girls day out before school started. Anyway! They had pictures of women that covered the walls and no not the naughty type just pictures mostly in black and white. They had seating in the middle of the restaurant and booths around the wall. When we sat down and was greeted with our water carafe which was cool because I drink a lot of water. I was pleasantly surprised by RJ Grunts but it is on the slightly expensive side. We got the Temperature Soup(broccoli cheddar soup), Stackable Onions, Fried Pickles, Kids Meal Grilled Cheese, and two different kind of burgers(Hickory Bacon Cheddar Cheese and Yowza Burger) The temperature soup that I had was awesome the flavors rolled around on my tongue like a beautiful dance(broccoli cheddar) and it was only .69 cents… I wish I had another cup that day I liked it so much! The way temperature soup works is that you are charged by what the temperature is for the day, but you have to buy an entrée’ in order to get it at that price. That is a great little gimmick if you ask me… I know you didn’t but hey this is my review… smile Now the Stackable Onion Rings were very tasty and just the right amount of crispiness on the outside and made with real onions… The price was kinda of steep at $ 6.50 for 10 onion rings! I have had Fried Pickles that I don’t like, Fried Pickles that I like and Fried Pickles that I LOVE this was very close to love. The batter was just right and the pickles were just the right sour… Now the price was $ 6.95 and they did give you a healthy portion for the price. My granddaughter loved them so much that she was ready to have both the pickles and the onion rings all too herself. I had to tell her that other people are at the table… lol she said«Oh but its so good NaNa!!!» yeah but I’m not ordering anymore so share!!! Let’s talk burgers for a second because, all while I was out that day that’s all I had on my mind and although the first part of meal was delicious the burger was kind of a late down and here is why: First I wanted my burger Medium but it was more like Medium Well, Secondly, it wasn’t well seasoned(it was like the depended on the ingredients on top of the burger to make up for the flavor) the toppings were very good but they could not carry the burger, Thirdly, it was kinda of dry. I mean listen they give you a big burger but it just was okay to me nothing that I will sit at home and think«Man I want a RJ Grunt Burger» like I did with the soup and appetizers did when I tasted them. My niece and I both felt the same in regards to our burgers but my Cottage Fries were very good and so were the regular fries. Side note if you get the regular fries they charge you an extra $ 1. My granddaughter had the Kids Meal Grilled Cheese for $ 6.95 and it was a really good deal. She got her grilled cheese of course along with fries, animal cookies, chocolate milk(which look to be made with Hershey Chocolate Sauce) as well as a toy. She was doing her own happy dance as the cheese oozed from the bread. I want to go back and try the Salad Bar because all the veggies looked fresh and after I had my Burger I had wished I got that instead especially since I could have had more soup, but it is kind of expensive at $ 14.95 and if you want to add grilled chicken or a scoop of tuna that is another $ 4.95 and, if you want any other item beside an appetizer it is $ 6.95 and, if you want the appetizer that will be an extra $ 8.95 added to your total. What I haven’t asked or found out is this… Are you charged separately for the chicken/tuna now stay with me and the appetizer if you want both… so do I start with $ 14.95 +$ 4.95 +$ 8.95 =28.85 that is very expensive for a salad bar especially if I don’t eat that much… lol I will ask the next time I go because I have one more gift certificate but I’m truly hoping that isn’t how it works… I will update as soon as I find out how that works. I also want to try the adult shakes but I can’t see paying $ 6.00 for a regular shake, but that’s just me! My waitress was great and I truly did enjoy myself enough to come back even if I didn’t have a gift certificate for my next visit! I think they are worth trying out and making up your own mind about what you like or not!!! I will be back!!! Enjoy!!!

Came here with my husband and another couple after taking pictures at the LP Zoo. We loved it! We started with the onion rings and fried pickles(my fav) which were really good. I got the California wrap which was really good and my husband got a burger which he really liked. The portions are HUGE! And the prices are very reasonable. The atmosphere was fun and our server was really nice. My only complaint would be that after the ice and fruit, there wasn’t much Sangria in my drink, but it was still very good! Wish we lived closer, we would come more often!

Found this lovely place on my cab ride to Lincoln Park Zoo(just across the street). The staff were all super friendly. My server was a gem. She walked through the menu as it was my first time there. Got the salad bar(huge compared to most, very fresh), the BLT(Yummy!) that comes with 2 pickle spears and fresh made potato chips. As there was a carafe of ice water waiting on the table, I ordered one of their amazing shakes which you can customize. I got a chocolate peanut butter shake that was to die for. I will definitely return here the next time I’m visiting LPZ!

I really wanted to like RJ Grunts. We showed up 30 minutes early for our reservation but they couldn’t accommodate us. Not a problem. We walked over to the zoo and enjoyably killed the time till they could seat us. When we got back, they seated us almost immediately. This gives them lots of bonus points in my book. Hence, I wanted to like it. Feeling adventuresome, we decided to try the fried pickles as an appetizer. Not a great choice. Basically it was like chicken McNuggets with a pickle in the center instead of mystery chicken parts. Not something I would ever get again. I tried their signature burger, the Grunt Burger, as a main course. Big disappointment. It was a very ordinary burger for $ 13. Not bad, but nothing I would ever get again. The only exceptional part of the meal was the dessert. We got the Cookie Bowl. Wow, that was great. My buddy got an ice cream sundae which he said was very good. So if I were looking for a place for dessert only, this would be a go-to place. But for a dinner, there are a lot of other options that are way ahead of it.

Great burgers a few blocks away from Lincoln Park Zoo. This place is known for its burgers. I happened to be around the neighborhood and decided to give it a shot. As I was walking towards the restaurant, first thing I noticed was the smell: we could smell hypnotizing delicious burgers even half a block away! Menu is generous and they offer more food beyond burgers. But I wasn’t there to explore anything else. I ordered a burger with a poblano pepper inside and was fascinated by it! At first it seemed to have too much cheddar cheese(the fake orange kind), but it turned out to balance the flavor just right. In a party of four, each one of us loved their burgers! I high recommend this place. They offer decently priced and delicious burgers!

Good spot to grab a lunch or dinner. It does get busy so it’s wise to make an advanced reservation. Huge salad bar with lots of choices of greens, pasta & soup selections. Look thru their menu before going because they have a large selection of choices(Menu: ). Overall service was Ok; our server was attentive and prompt with our needs & requests; wait for the food wasn’t long and the ambiance was a bit retro with dark amber lights and 60’s pictures of women every corner of the wall. I ordered the Old Hickory(Chicken Breast with cajun spices) for $ 10.95. It’s always an odd feeling for me to order a burger priced over $ 10. I am not a fan for paying that much of a burger. My sandwich lacked cajun spices and tasted mediocre. My wife ordered the Mushroom Swiss Burger for $ 11.95 and tasted like any other burger. There is nothing here at RJ Grunts that placed their food or service above other restaurants besides their prices. Kids menu available but I don’t recommend it. Very small portions. Kids ordered chicken tenders/strips and it came with(2) descent sized strips with their homemade chips(potato chips). I don’t see a reason to recommend RJ Grunts. It’s is over priced. C’mon who pays $ 8 for grilled cheese? Two slices of bread & Kraft Velveeta cheese melted in between(I prefer bacon) too. Gave(3) stars because it’s descent but nothing to rave about.

After an extremely long day at work, I had decided to stop into this Lincoln Park gem. After waiting a short time, I was seated in Dori’s section. She is outstanding. To make a long short, I decided to order the BBQ Ribs, which was the daily special. When I was presented the incredible platter of ribs. OMG, the ribs were outstanding. Dori would check in with me without being overbearing. There were enough ribs, I had to take half of the ribs home. Again, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
