Arrived early for my appointment with Dr. Stulberg to have my hip replacement checked. Was greeted nicely by the receptionist and at my appointment time I was taken to have my xrays done by another lovely lady. Right after that I was taken into a room and checked in by yet another pleasant lady… so far so good. My appointment was for 4pm and by 5pm Dr. Stulberg was still MIA. As it was late I thought I should go and see if he was still here and that I was not forgotten about. The receptionist called his nurse who came in and told me that he was running late and that there was still another appointment still ahead of me. My definition of running late is 15 minutes and not hour! Not once did anyone come and tell me that he was running late so shame on that office. No one was concerned that I had left work at 3pm to ensure that I would be on time nor did anyone concern themselves that maybe I have plans that I would be late for. It just amazes me that Dr. Stulberg is so inconsiderate of people’s time and feels he can get away with it. Well he did for a bit and then I decided I gave him far to my of my valuable time and left at 5.15pm! If you like being abused by someone wasting your time by keeping you waiting hey make an appointment!

I had hip replacement surgery of my right hip by Dr. Stulberg about 3 years ago. His website showed a cartoon film of the minimally invasive anterior approach, but he uses the classic posterio-lateral approach. When pre-surgical X-rays were taken, I asked Dr. Stulberg to take standing X-rays because I have a pelvic tilt in which the right hip is higher than the left, which can only be fully viewed in standing X-rays. He refused and said that he didn’t need standing X-rays. I explained that the prosthetic femur length needed to compensate for the tilt, which had no impact on him at all. I wrote on the medications form that I could NOT take morphine and no derivatives of morphine, that the opiates made me violently ill, which I also emphasized to Dr. Stulberg orally. The upshots were: (1) Morphine or a derivative was infused in the recovery room through an arm catheter, which caused me to vomit continuously for 6 hours, when I finally realized what was being infused and demanded it be removed, which it was. Although the vomiting stopped within a couple of hours of removal, I felt so sick to my stomach that I couldn’t eat for 3 days in the hospital nor anything except broth and ice-cream during the subsequent week in a skilled nursing center, (2) Dr. Stulberg made the leg length from acetabulum(hip socket) to foot exactly the same as the unoperated left leg, with NO compensation for my pelvic tilt. The consequence is that all my right shoes must be built up by ½ inch, and I can no longer go barefoot even in my own home. If you want a surgeon who actually pays serious attention to patients about relevant medical issues, don’t go to Dr. Stulberg. If you care more about a surgeon with an otherwise good bedside manner who is technically skilled in carrying out surgery — which I infer from the total absence of pain during 4 weeks of recovery in the absence of pain-killers -, although the planned and accomplished surgery ignores the patient’s pelvic anatomy, then you may be satisfied to wear a ½ inch added sole to shoes for one foot. However, even if so, I would advise against surgeons who are past 75 years old. I was told by Dr. Stulberg’s colleague that he was at «the peak of his powers» when I had my surgery, but his peak left me violently ill for 8 or so hours posr-surgically and crippled for the rest of my life.
