Sonnys Food Store

I’ve been going to sonny’s for over 15 years now… almost daily. Convenient for sure! However, Sonny is no longer really there anymore (Retired??) But, he still owns it. It use to be, when I came in… I would receive a nice greeting… and a sincere Thanks for my business. Now, Sonnys has a young Tall guy (who, I believe is running the place) that can’t say Hello or a thanks! In fact, he generally won’t say anything. Though, he talks… I’ve heard him. His way too young to be angry at life. Move on if you don’t like it… as I will just move my business down the street to 7Eleven where they appreciate my business. Sonny, take note!

Great place to go grab late night munchies. The owners are extremely nice and friendly. Prices are a tad high (as stated in previous reviews), but not high enough to scare me away.

Sonny’s food store is the best. Sonny is an amazing person and so funny! Family owned businesses are rare and this one is a gem.

So, I know that this is a «convenience» store and the prices are going to be a little higher, but this is ridiculous. Walk a block in either direction and you’ll find some of the same products for half the price. There’s a new place a block up Lunt that’s just as nice and offers much better options for a lower price.
That being said, the guys who work there are always super nice and the place is well located. If it weren’t for the high prices, I’d be there more often.

This is a convenience store; if you aren’t sure what that entails, you probably haven’t reflected upon the American social scene very often. The prices here are justifiably inflated as a reflection of the additional convenience provided by the store’s existence.
With that said, all the staff member I have met seem like decent guys, and are never anything but polite. The product selection is sufficiently wide, and the hours are immensely convenient.

It is convenient, has a wide selection for a corner shop, and the staff are friendly. It is a little expensive but you pay for the convenience of having a neighborhood corner store with late hours. No, it isn’t a boutique store and it isn’t a cheap discount store, but it is convenient and has enough of a selection to make it worthwhile. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.

Store is pretty dirty and everything is marked up by 20% or so. Walk two blocks to the 7 – 11 and save your money.

Went here the first day we moved into an apartment building across the street. We got most of the things anyone who just moves in needs. It was a bit pricey but like they say you pay for convenience.

I have one word to describe Sonny’s: Ugh.
I used to live in the apartment building that also houses Sonny’s and it was by far the most convenient place for me to pick up whatever processed junk food I happened to be craving at 11:33 pm. HOWEVER, I only went there because it was close… otherwise, I’d say don’t.
Dusty. Musty. Old. Overpriced. And I swear Sonny is running some kind of racket through there. He used to make hand over fist on laundry cards for that apartment building which made me want to impulsively steal things to get my money’s worth (I never did but I’m not going to say I didn’t think about it).
The help is weird. Some are actually completely creepy. There are plenty of other corner stores in the neighborhood. Really. Go there instead.

Sonny has toughed it out in Rogers Park for years, putting up with disrespectful punks, robbers and assorted low lifes, along with the many nice folks who appreciate his little store.
I’m partial to his freezer full of premium ice creams… perfect for those spontaneous cravings on summer nights.

Sonny’s is expensive compared to the chain stores that make up the flotsam and jetsam of Rogers Park. But the clerks are funny and up-​to-​date on all the local happenings — especially Carlos. I can always find what I need at Sonny’s, especially if I am too inebriated to locate the car. At the same time, parking is crap around here unless you want to fight the other locals for a coveted street parking spot, so if you’re on foot, go to to Sonny’s.

The place looks as though it’s been around a while and could use some updating.
That said, The prices are on the high side in my humble opinion, but it’s a convenience store, and you pay the price for convenience. After all, it’s not a Jewel or Dominicks.
I’ve always found the clerks to be friendly and I’ve joked around with them quite a bit — so it may be one’s approach too in how they interact with you. I’ve always found them to be friendly.
incidentally, The soda being flat isn’t the fault of the store — it’s the fault of the vendor that sold it to them.
All in all — for quick, limited selection (which, for it’s size, is pretty suprising) by all means stop here! I know I do!

Only stop here if necessary. For selection and quality, think dirty gas station. Now up the price by about 15%. I stopped in for some pepsi and snack foods. The soda was flat (and expensive) and the cookies were stale. I would personally recommend White Hen just down the street. I know, support local businesses, and I know White Hen’s selection isnt that great either, but its a gem compared to this place.
Two stars is for the good attitude of the clerk. Much nicer than some of the convenience store owners further down Sheridan.

This is a decent place for a quick stop. They carry all your essentials — a little high priced they are, but it is a very quick stop. They also have an ATM inside and carry various newspapers.
