If I could give less than one star I would. We hired sweet cakes to do our wedding cake. They were not responsive and required calling, emailing, and calling again to get some sort of a response. Vern was our main point of contact. We specifically asked to have a natural looking wedding cake — no polka dots and we got a wedding cake with polka dots. Plus– we paid for a cake to feed 155 people— we had ~135 people at the wedding and about 90 people got cake. My husband and I didn’t even get a slice of cake at our own wedding. The guests that did get a slice of cake got slices that were so thin it was embarrassing. Vern delivered he cake, but didn’t even take it out of the box and put it on the cake stand– he just left it. He didn’t even coordinate with the caterer. Then he blamed them for cutting the cake the wrong way after we didn’t have even close to the amount to feed our guests. The cake was frozen solid when it was delivered so our florist wasn’t able to decorate with the flowers she wanted. When I told Emily and Vern about the cake not being the right design or feeding the right amount of people, Vern accused the caterer and would not reimburse us for the 50+ slices of cake we were missing. Terrible service. Don’t waste your money or time. Go with a different bakery.

Nice independent place, I felt bad I thought they were affiliated with the place in Skokie called Sweety Pies, what a jerk I am. Run by a tight crew who churn out the fresh and delish pastries, coffees and the like come thru and get a jump start on your weak, I mean week, whoa that was Freudian eh? Lookin weak I guess bro, gotta carb up.

I have a sweet tooth and sometimes I will enjoy cakes, pies, and cookies. However, the bright side of this revelation is, I am vegan. Right? Well, after enjoying some vegan fare at Ben’s Noodle and Rice I came up with the bright idea to end my meal with some vegan sweets. I did a quick Google search and chose Sweet Cakes Bakery. I called to verify they were open and this guaranteed, I would consume more carbs and sugars today than I do on a normal day. I was impressed with the cookies, pies, and scones. They are freshly made with whole fruits and nuts. The deserts I chose were sweetened to perfection, they are prepared to allow one an opportunity to appreciate the delicate ingredients. The deserts I chose were not hidden by an extraordinarily amount of sugar or a thick layer of butter. I will remember this location when I am in the mood for Sweet Cakes.

The cupcakes were …forgettable. IMHO mariano red velvet cupcakes are more moist and I didn’t even get the vegan/gluten free. I feel like they were not fresh just sitting there for few days and I had them 3 days late. I didn’t review back then because I thought they are new and learning but today I had a bagel sandwich with only cream cheese and 1 simple topping. The bagel bread was stale and hard. I threw half of it away even though I was hungry. Giving it 1 star because it is so overpriced! For the quality of food you can make in your own kitchen with Betty Crocker mixes, they charge like a gourmet place so obviously it raises your expectations and then the food is bad. My bad bagel sandwich cost 6.50 $ with tax.

Great place for breakfast – «The Egg» is great, and their bagels, while not a conventional NY-style(more of a crisp than chewy exterior) are very tasty. It’s also a nice place to come and work, with free wifi, outlets, and none of the crowding of some places nearby. I also recently ordered a cake here for my son’s birthday, and it was really cute and really tasty – we got compliments on both fronts.

I had been looking for a vegan bakery for my dad’s upcoming birthday for a few weeks. I really hadn’t had much luck. Since I live pretty south of anything vegan I tried calling places and emailing beforehand. I tried emailing paper moon and calling and never got a response. I also tried emailing mindful baking and still no response and a handful of other bakeries that couldn’t give me a quote or much of anything over the phone. I was really disappointed, I even considered baking the cake myself but that would have been a nightmare. All I wanted was to be able to actually eat birthday cake at a party which I haven’t been able to since I went vegan, it was looking really dreary. That is until I found this gem after a bunch of research, boy am I happy I did. I called right away and was able to get pricing immediately and not to mention the gentlemen I spoke to wasn’t rushing to get me off the phone. I went the following Sunday and person at the counter an older gentleman was so sweet and kind. I put in my order with no problem and even walked out with some vegan and gluten free cupcakes which were so delicious! Let’s face it, gluten free stuff is usually not great. These cupcakes didn’t even taste gluten free, they were soft and a generous size and the FROSTING was amazing! Tasting the cupcakes reassured me I had made the right decision. Also I would like to add that they are so reasonably priced so I found my bakery for all my events!

I love Sweet Cakes! I go here weekly for some sort of treat. Their vegan cupcakes and cookies are amazing. The staff is so nice and the atmosphere is cute. They have free wifi and it is a great place to get work done after I get off the blue line. If you are vegan or gluten free this is a great place for you!

I absolutely love Sweet Cakes! The first time I came, I stopped in because it was very cold and the #9 bus was delayed. I got shelter and an amazing mini cherry pie pastry while I waited and discovered this hidden gem! Cute and delicious looking cupcakes, yummy beverages, friendly staff, and a very«grandma’s kitchen» feeling. LOVE the Egg muffin for breakfast(savory muffin with an egg inside) and look forward to trying other breakfast options on the way into work and sweet options on the way home!

I love this place. It is MY spot when I grab some coffee and a baked good or 2. The customer service is awesome and I always leave with a smile. The French Egg is pretty much the best invention ever… The Egg aint so bad either. But yea, it feels good to support this small business and help them co-exist with all the larger and million-dollar backed companies dominating this scene. If you appreciate the midwest and it’s character you should shop here. It helps me leave the city and get my buzz on at the same time :)

I have tried every dang cupcake place in Chicago. Every single one. I swear. None of them can hold a candle to this place!!! My love for cupcakes originated in Atlanta, a la Camicakes, which is just phenomenal. This is not like Camicakes(lots of butter, sugar, and frosting), but just as amazing, in a different way. These cupcakes are a perfect balance of not-too-moist and not-too-dry, and I’m sure the owner would never give her secrets away, there’s a crispness to the edge of the«muffin top» part that is just amazing. I can finally eat cupcakes in Chicago! :D

I have only been here for their pastries. And each time, I leave dreaming about when I will return for some more deliciousness. Literally, my mouth is salivating at the thought of some of the things I have had! If you want options beyond your standard muffin or croissant(but don’t worry, those are available, too), this place is perfect. I had The Egg(cornbread muffin with boiled egg inside — I am obsessed) and the Brioche Bostock(almond pastry) and both are incredible. INCREDIBLE. Free wifi with a cluster of seating in the back — comfortable, quiet. Perfect for a grab-n-go on your way to work(it is right by the Ashland/Division/Milwaukee transportation hub), to plug in for work(as I am doing now) or to enjoy a cup of java with a friend. Also, take these goodies anywhere with you and from what I’ve tasted so far, you will be a pastry hero. And who doesn’t want to be a pastry hero? They feel a little tucked away on the lesser trafficked side of the Polish Triangle by the wig shop and cell phone store, but DONOTMISSTHEM. My only criticism is that they aren’t closer to my house so I could enjoy them more often — ha!

I am very under with my purchase the man behind the counter was completely nice but my purchase was 4 cupcakes and 2 chocolate spice cookies I FEELLIKETHATWASSOEXPENSIVE especially since the cupcakes were lacking I got 1 red velvet 1 carrot and 2 banana pudding and they all weren’t terrible but just tasted not sweet like they were missing some prime ingredients for example my red velvet the actual cupcake had very little to no taste and the cream cheese frosting was bitter and sour same for the carrot the frosting was bitter and sour the banana was moist but it didn’t have that cinnamon creamy taste it basically tasted like milk the frosting was lacking with no taste my one star is for the 2 chocolate spice cookies they were delicious

I had walked past this place so many times without going in because I wasn’t in the market for a cake and I took the name too literally. Thanks to browsing Unilocal I realized they had a lot more to offer and finally stopped one day while I had some time before my bus was due. It was much bigger than I expected, with plenty of seating. I tried The Egg(a cornbread muffin with a boiled egg inside) and coffee and it was a perfect breakfast. The cornbread was nothing like I would have made at home since I learned to make it from my Southern grandmother, but I still enjoyed it and would definitely get it again. I also got a lemon cupcake to go, and I consider it a personal favor that this bakery isn’t open very late because it would be hard to resist forming a daily cupcake habit if they were open in the evening.

I came to buy cupcakes for a friend and luckily they were having a cupcake happy hour(buy 2 get one free after 3pm on Saturday), and they were a huge hit! The margarita one was the best, followed by authentic tasting root beer and then chocolate Oreo, and of course I’m always a sucker for red velvet(so moist!). They came in an adorably cute box. They mentioned they also serve brunch before noon on weekends so I will definitely have to come check that out!

Great selection of pastries, cupcakes and other baked treats. The speciality for me was the cornbread muffin with a hidden boiled egg inside! It was sweet and delicious as well as serving as a good breakfast/snack item. The staff were very friendly and patient as we tried our hardest to make a decision on what to eat! I was impressed to see organic earl grey tea on offer as well showing they’ve got the breadth of stock and yummy eats available. There are plenty of tables inside so you can relax away from the busy street and junction outside. Hope this place does really well as it certainly brightened my day by paying it a visit. I suggest you do too!

Given my experience this past Saturday, I would say skip the cookies and stick to cupcakes; we tried the root beer, mint chocolate chip and cookies & cream versions of cupcakes and all were pretty good. The plain chocolate chip cookie was actually pretty bad. Reasonable prices and a great location accessible from many different directions/modes of transport.

The people who work here are super nice and the pastries are very clearly baked from scratch by someone who cares. There’s a rotating array of baked goods, including fancy things like kouign amann(so delicious, probably so bad for you). It feels a lot more personal than your average bakery. The atmosphere isn’t the most conducive to lingering, but they do have tables and chairs and free wifi. Also it’s right next to the blue line!

A great place to stop in the morning. The staff is very friendly and helpful. All their pastries are great. A different selection everyday. Their cupcakes are a must try! It would awesome if they offered breakfast sandwiches. Time will tell, they are always growing and changing.

This place is a real nice spot. The location is hard to spot at first, but you can see it from the exit of division blue line stop. The croissants are awesome. The coffee is nice and strong. It is nice to see a family owned bakery. A good alternative to Dunkin Donuts plastic food. I always try something different every time, and I am yet to be disappointed. The best part is they have a loyalty punch card, 6 coffees and your 7th is free! Go here! Support small business!

Had a 2-star experience, but they are new so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I had the oatmeal raisin cookie and besides the name there was nothing to indicate oatmeal had ever come in contact with this 1.95 cookie. Now sure there were cupcakes and pastries to pick from, but nothing looked super moist or especially delicious so I thought I would play it safe with a cookie. The cookie was dry and bland and made me crave some satisfying sweets. But on the upside I was offered a free cup of tea, as a part of their grand opening promotion. I selected the citrus tea and it was good! Like good enough to go back and order it without a disappointing baked goods. The tea was loose leaf and had a strong, but not over powering, flavor. This very new, and very bare on the inside. I wlll give them some time to throw some colors on the wall and some flavor in their recipes., but i would revisit.
