Chico is anti-music and anti-youth. This is apparent with their constant attack on live music establishments and business owners. Dex is an all ages club that caters to all genres of music. Without the ability to get a beer and wine license, keeping the doors open relies solely on getting consistent shows booked. In any given week, you’ll have a hip hop show, metal show, and acoustic. The owner does an admirable job of bringing music to Chico for everyone to enjoy. However, there are a few problems that come with this endeavor. Without the added income of alcohol sales, the venue lacks consistent patronage. People will come to a show, watch one band, and then leave for a drink. Often they don’t come back. Having the extra funding would also help with investing in better lighting and sound. As it stands, its a great place to catch a traveling band and hear some new music for around 5 bucks. If the city of Chico wanted youth to have positive outlets in the community, they would vest time and effort into helping this business succeed. Investing in the arts should encompass venues that bring arts to our community. As it stands, the long term viability of Dex is in question. Keeping the doors open relies on everyone coming together and supporting this endeavor. Check out Dex on Facebook, find a show, and stop by. Even if you don’t stay, you’re at least helping the local music scene which is appreciated.
