Turned on to this place by a local… great advice. Ran by the Ohio Historical Society, it its hayday, was 2000 acres and home to Thomas Worthington, Ohio’s 6th governor. While now only 300 acres, located on high ground atop a large hill, the grounds have a modern history building with nice displays, a huge garden(Worthington’s wife’s passion) out buildings, scenic look outs, and of course the house itself. The house, finished in 1807 was super cool. 22″ thick sandstone wall, wood doors, heavy hardwood floors, staged in the early 1800 décor with some original Worthington family pieces. The guided tour was outstanding! The guide was a walking/talking encyclopedia of knowledge about the Worthingtons and the house! We were actually surprised of the wealth of knowledge she had and shared. Definitely worth the $ 8 admission. Oh, and the grounds keeper(who live in a small house on the grounds) has a camel. Thats right, a live camel! Outstanding! I highly recommend!

No reviews? Seriously? Okay, I’m up. I’ve been going here since I was a kid(family in the area.) It has changed a bit over the years, with 2 or 3 renovations. Each time it gets nicer, and presumably more historically accurate. You have to take a guided tour of the house, running about every half hour. Our guide gave plenty of background information, and answered any questions(with patience, for a few in our group who weren’t listening to her explanations…) The house isn’t huge, but it is very well built and illustrative of its period. Anyone with any interest in history, Ohio, and architecture will love it. You can wander the gardens and outbuildings on your own, and swing by an overlook to see the view that inspired the Great Seal of Ohio. The gardens are a fairly recent addition, and I’d like to see more info on the plant varieties. OHS members get in free, and it’s almost worth signing up just for that. There’s a small visitor’s center on the way in, with good displays about early Ohio, and a small gift shop with, among other things, local honey. Well worth a stop if you are anywhere nearby.
