Traveling, we happened to be routed past this resturaunt because of a train. Which turned out to be a good thing. We both ordered the sausage biscuits and gravy half potato gravy, after our waitress told us it was hand made and a community favorite. I’m picky about my biscuit gravy, but this passed my muster, it was good, hot, potatoes too. Would definately stop here again!! Friendly atmosphere and wait staff was Great! Thank you

Found this place based on good Unilocal reviews. We agree with the good reviews! All four of us had great food and loved that there is a lighter fare menu. The pie is super yummy! We’ll be back!

First off, this place was packed! But we were still seated within five minutes and got our order in less than fifteen! Total time there was under 30 minutes. Also, best breakfast I’ve ever had!!! Great service and food

Great homecooked food. large portions. .reasonable and friendly.. and homemade pie… whats not to like? The restaurant also is a GREAT community supporter. I was very impressed with fundraising they do for a local, fallen police officers family…

Pretty traditional diner. I have visited here a number of times now and would rate the food around a solid three. It isn’t going to blow your mind but you will enjoy it. The staff mos def tries their best to keep up with the amount of service they receive but during busier hours they def struggle to keep their heads above water. If you are looking for a solid meal and good service for a fair price, this is the spot

It’s probably more of a 3.5. But definitely better than a 3 so, they get a 4 I went there this morning(Sunday) and so there was a long waiting list. However, they were getting people through rapidly. Staff we’re very friendly, which always chills you out when you are waiting. We were offered coffee while waiting for our table, which was nice. Once seated, my lady and I ordered our food. It took at least 20 minutes from then to get our food. But I understood as they were swamped. Guess their friendliness gave me a soft spot. Cause there are times I wait that long and I become impatient and irritated. The food proportions are generous, which was a big plus ’cause I was hungry! Our food was very good. However, I had asked for my steak to be cooked medium well. I prefer this for breakfast. My steak came medium-rare to medium. Much more pink than should have been. But it still tasted very good. Anyway, overall I enjoyed it.

Pleasant restaurant with solid food. We were driving through the area came across this little family diner. The waitstaff and owner could not have been nicer. The food was definitely above average. My wife and I both had different types of omelettes and both were delicious. The side of pancakes was just average but I still finished them.

Call it two and a half stars. The food is completely underwhelming. It’s cheap and you’ll get a lot of it, but that’s the most positive thing I can say about the food. The only reason I’ve gone back is because of the crazy good and crazy efficient service. Your beverage will never go empty and you’ll never feel unattended. If you go, go for breakfast.

Holy FOOD! You don’t get just a portion, you get a whole family meal for the price of one. When I come to Chippewa for work, this restaurant is right down the road so we come here for lunch. Make sure to get there early because it’s jammin’ in there. It’s your typical dinner menu but the quality if above average. I’ve tried their soups which are really tasty and also their salads. Just beware that you don’t just get a chef salad, you get a whole head of lettuce or two, three tomatoes sliced, tons and tons of meat a package of cheese(or so it feels like it) etc. It’s well worth the money! Not a bad little stop for Chippewa. Make sure to try a piece of pie!

The service, owner, cooks and staff are way above anything in the area. It is always full and you must look to find it in it’s out of the way location. Anyone owning a restaurant that wants to increase their business should spend some time there watching John runs the place. and Ed at the Altoona Family Restaurant have this process down to a science.

We went here with family based upon the ratings on Unilocal, although the number of reviews is awfully low, so that was a concern. First, let me say that they all mentioned the service as a positive. I can say that this is wholly true. We had 12 in our party, and four of us were under 5 years old. Not an easy party to serve, but team service, and our server, did above average. They were on top of keeping our water filled, provided me with plenty of honey and lemon for my hot tea, and even let me keep the second setup when a second one was brought by mistake. I like that. As for the food, we had a mixed experience. Most of us had soup, and the options were chicken dumpling and cream of broccoli. The dumpling soup was beautiful, and those who chose it praised it. The cream of broccoli was tasty, but we agreed that it a bit too thick, it kinda sat in the bowl in a convex way. As for entrees, my father and I got burgers which were claimed(by the menu) to be the best burger in the Chippewa Valley. That convinced me. I wanted to try the best burger in the valley. I’m still hoping to try it. This was not it. It was properly cooked at medium rare and medium well for both of us, and the bacon was perfectly crispy. The seeded bun was nice, and the fixings were fresh. BUT, the burger patty was utterly tasteless. I specifically ate my first few bites of it without ketchup to get a sense of it as a burger. But I ended up adding the condiment to cover my disappointment. But it was not terrible. It was a solid burger, just not inspiring. The«Swedish meatballs» were actually terrible. Both my mother and sister had those. First, the meatballs came out atop egg noodles with a thin gravy that looked about right, but I did think they were a bit gravy-light. But after tasting it, maybe it was a good thing. I’m knowledgeable about what good Swedish meatballs and gravy taste like. Al Johnson’s in Door County, and even IKEA have really tasty and authentic plates of the same. These weren’t even Swedish meatball adjacent. The meatballs. Oh, the meatballs. They were porcupine meatballs, you know the kind you loathed in your lunch line in grade school. They had RICE inside. The reason I like Swedish meatballs is that they are tasty round morsels of delicious rice-free meat. The consistent texture is what I love. The gravy. Not sure what they were trying to do there. The texture was right, but the flavor was wrong. The gravy tasted of pepper and celery. It was truly odd and I couldn’t eat more than two bites of the meatballs with it on. My mother kept trying to give them to us to eat, putting them on our plates while we protested. And both she and my sister kept talking about how bad they were(and neither of them have had authentic Swedish meatballs before), even at breakfast the next morning. That says something. They made a memory. I know that we’ll not be back for that reason. We had hoped to find a place to dine while we were back up north visiting with family, but the rest of my family won’t want to go back. It’s sad.

Great service and a fantastic owner! One Sunday we arrived when the crowds were heavy(just as church let out) and there was a wait. The owner grabbed coffee cups and made sure everyone waiting was given coffee and that it was kept full the entire time we waiting AND that coffee did not appear on our bill! It was a short wait and, as always, it was worth waiting for. Glad they are in Chippewa!

Stopped here on our way home from visiting family. Believe it or not, while getting gas, I asked a local person where a good place to eat was and he suggested Chippewa Family Restaurant. He was RIGHT! Very good family style food, friendly wait staff, clean establishment and great pie. Will stop here again when traveling through Wisconsin.

I have never had a bad experience here. The wait staff and managers are fantastic as is the food! Menu with a wide variety of items, from breakfast to dinner. Prices are great and portions are huge. This place does it right! They also have a place in Altoona and Menomonie Wisconsin. Both of those are fantastic also.
