«As good as it gets» describes both my experience with this practice, and Dr. Poovey himself. I have been in to his office twice now for yearly eye exams, and I have been so impressed with his level of professionalism and knowledge. His expertise is absolutely top notch, and he’s got to be a genius at multi-​tasking, because he is paying strict attention to every little thing about your vision, and at the same time, he can be chatting with you about some other topic entirely. As an aside, Dr Poovey is so intelligent and well-​informed in so many subjects, he makes great conversation, too. But if you would be expecting a pompous and snooty individual by someone telling you how smart he is, you would be pleasantly surprised at how affable and down-​to-​earth he is as well. I saw him primarily for contact lenses, and the RX was just perfect. And I have some complicating factors in my vision correction: astigmatism and multifocal requirements, which makes it a little tricky to get right, but as I said, his expertise is unfailing and the lenses are perfect. The first time, I asked him for an extra right lens, and he gave me a whole extra pair, which are different types. So he is as nice as he is on the ball. The office is clean and unpretentious, no frills there, but the reasonable cost of care there would be very tough to to beat, as well as the quality. Overall, you will not find a more satisfactory optometrist in the New River Valley.
