St Rose of Lima Church

Love it whenever Father Mario gives his sermon at 1:15 on the Spanish mass. He always ends the sermon with a joke before the last blessing. He gets to the youth by keeping religion and current events on the community on his sermons.

LOVE this church. I’ve been coming here since I was a little girl. Had all my sacraments here (with exception to my baptism). Father Dolan is the main man and doing a great job with the church. I was fortunate enough to have him marry my husband and I. He speaks to the congregation in such a lovely manner.
I also think we’re blessed to have Father Jacob. He’s one of the greatest priest’s that I’ve ever met. I love hearing him preach/​speak. He’s so intellectual and articulate. He also helps with marriage fellowships at the church.
The church has done so much for the community. It has been well established in CV for many years and I look forward to the years to come! =)

I grew up with this church. I remember the wonderful sermons by Monsignor Young (RIP) and then Monsignor Duncanson. Now there is Father Dolan running the show and running the show like a champion. Under his care Fr. Dolan has helped the St. Rose stay supportive to its LARGE congregation, weather an economic crisis, and find the resources to help St. Rose grow. I don’t know anything about the school but by next year they will have a completely new school building which will serve its kids well. Fr. Dolan gives wonderful sermons and he actually has quite a nice voice to listen to when he chants. He is also bilingual speaking Spanish and has picked up some Tagalog from the large Filipino population there. Eventually the church itself will be torn down and rebuilt which is good. The builiding is very old so safety and décor are quite outdated.
They have THE MOST WONDERFUL Youth Choir called One Voice. It started off as quartet earlier in 2009 I think and has grown steadily since. What I love is that they sing the usual mass songs you expect but they have also injected some modern worship songs so you hear songs from Kathryn Scott, Matt Maher, and Darlene Zerchich (sp?). They also gave one heck of a Christmas concert. Lights. Gold robes. Narration with actors. Incredible singing. I feel like asking them to make a CD sometimes.
It would be 5 stars but the place as I said is under renovation and parking is rough.

It all started with CCD on Saturday mornings. What a «I’ma eat cereal and watch cartoons» buzzkill.
Fast forward to high school, I became a «devout Catholic» following the teachings of Jesus and an avid church-​goer. But… it didn’t last long. My first make-​out session was in the parking lot of the church with James (hard-​core punk rocker). I partied with a doobie bros. Oh! And I met, and hooked up with guys from my church group. Yes David Bowie «rebel, rebel.»
Nowadays I only attend Sunday services when visiting my mom. I refuse to dip my fingers in the holy water because I think it’s unsanitary. I propose «holy anti-​bacterial.» Bath and Body Works business would sky-​rocket! I refuse to drink from the communal wine cup because «I don’t know what kind of diseases you harbor in there!» Your lips and mine will meet on this cup, eww. And, I propose we get comedian’s to do the sermon’s. Most of the time I replay 30-​min sitcom’s in hopes the time will go faster or calculate the ratio of grey-​haired people to non-​grey-​haired.
I am a bad Catholic.

I don’t want to go to hell, so 5-​stars it is!
I grew up going to this church. From CCD to the dances that I DJ’ed to going to church every Sunday. Well, at least every other Sunday… of every other month! It’s a decent church, but with some of these new churches with state of the art acoustic systems, it can be expensive to keep up.
BTW, how many of you drink the wine when doing communion? It just seems a little too insanitary to me. Also, is there a catalog to order the wine? Do they just get 2 buck chuck at Trader Joes? Also, why is it sometimes white instead of red? I thought white wine only goes with fish. Okay, I’ll stop. I think I’m bordering on blasphemy.
