I stopped by yesterday — after discovering this shop on Unilocal — only to find the doors closed during normal Saturday business hours and a For Sale sign on the door… Sad The price range and rating were selected only because the site wouldn’t let me complete the post with blank fields.

The way I found this place was it sells ice cream from my favorite local creamery, Neiderfranks. This is closer than National City for a fix! What I stumbled into is a place with amazingly baked goodies. Tres Leches, Tiramisu, chocolate croissants, pastries, cookies, brownies and crème brûlée’s. They have a huge array of different flavored goodies that I always end up stocking up on in addition to the ice cream. They serve excellent coffee too, so it’s part of my caffeine fix rotation too.

First of all, its hard to find Pilipino-run establishments that do not serve traditional pilipino food. I love pinoy food but that is what family parties are for. I had heard about this place from another Unilocaler and could not wait to stop by. After getting a tooth filed down by my favorite dentist, I drove down about three blocks to Yumz. At Yumz I did not see any sapin-sapin or halo halo on display and I was glad. No traditional jelly roll or mocha sponge cake here either. Instead I saw chocolate cake, pistachio cake, tres leches cake, tiramisu, more cakes, miniature cheesecakes and cakes, brownies, bars, chocolate bombes, cookies, pastries, stuffed pretzels and Neiderfranks ice cream! I was in Chula Vista heaven. I am eating the crème brûlée cheesecake right now. YUMZ!!! Cake at the bottom with a dense and creamy cheesecake that has been bruleed ontop. It would be perfect served with a rasberry coulis. Oh yeah, they sell Neiderfranks ice cream at a better price than Neiderfranks! Ok, I’ve only had the cheesecake but I do have the Grand Marnier chocolate cake waiting in the fridge. For now, 4 stars. I plan to visit again so I can give a more objective opinion. I am really picky about desserts especially cheesecake. Cheesecake killers: 1) Too many eggs in the batter makes a cheesecake taste like what else? Eggs! 2) Too much cheese. If I wanted a cheesy cheesecake, I would just eat a block of cream cheese. 3) Crispy crust. If you are going to use graham crackers, don’t forget tons of butter or the waterbath to bake your cheesecake in. Nothing is worse than sand-like crust. 4) Coffee syrup, non-tart fake fruit anything, and semi-sweet chocolate in cheesecake. MY tastebuds taste pancake syrup when I taste coffee syrup. Fake rasberry syrups tastes like lipstick. Fake lemon curd tastes like a vitamin syrup my mom made me drink when I was a kid. Semi-sweet chocolate should be reserved for cookies and chocolate fountains. Cheesecake is a little tart and the flavor of semi-sweet chocolate seems like an afterthought and just not enough chocolate flavor. 5) No bake cheesecake in a box. Is there even cheese in it? I can make a no-bake cheesecake using real cream cheese and gelatin.

New bakery in the South Bay since June 2007. The mini chocolate croissants for 80 cents a piece are good, just the right size for something so buttery. All of the pastries/desserts look beautiful and decadent. Definitely a cute, little place to get some diedrich coffee and share a little sweet something between two people. They also serve those frozen gourmet stuffed pretzels in like 8 different flavors. I mean, they weren’t really frozen. They nuked it before serving it to us. You know what I mean. It was alright. It’s all about the pan de leche.

I was on my way to the Henry’s then I discovered this new bakery.(I think it was an old gift shop or something like that.) Pleasantly surprised that you can find good quality bakeries in the southbay area, with big selection, good flavor and reasonable price.
