Drake Planetarium

I was really surprised to find out that this was located in Norwood Highschool. I don’t know if it mentions that on the website. When we arrived we were confused as to where it was located.
When we entered the planetarium it was really small, no big deal. The man gave us a run down on the space system and that was my favorite part. 15 minutes later the «let it snow» program began and that’s where it fell short for me.
I ended up leaving the show after about the 5^th song. The songs were classic and nice, but the volume was very low. I wished it were louder, perhaps a better sound system.
Then, there is the fact that you have to turn you head all the way back almost to see the presentation and I was sitting in the back row. The graphics were very basic and I’m not even a fan of high def because it’s too high tech, so if I’m not happy with the graphics there is a problem lol.
For the price of $ 10 dollars a ticket, it was a let down. If anything I look at it like a donation and hope it gets put back into the school.

We saw the Skies Over Cincinnati and it was wonderful. The presenter was knowledgeable and gave us lots of time for questions. The kids (8 and 10) thought it was a lot of fun. I definitely would go back to see another show!

Now I have lived in Cincinnati for a long time I even worked in Norwood for over a year right across the road and did not know this place was here. It is one of the hidden jewels of the city, How many High schools would you expect to have a planetarium. Located on the top floor of the school is the Planetarium and a space and science gift shop. They have different shops that they do. Now it is a small dome and the sky is a scaled down. It is not the best quality show or setup but is still a lot of fun and something that for the price is worth going to. I would like to go to the laser show next.

The ‘let it snow’ show is perfect for young kids. It’s all music and cartoons. Best of all it’s only 45 minutes long (for those with short attention spans).

Named for Dr. Frank Drake, SETI founder and numberer of planets in the universe, this little planetarium is tucked into the upstairs of the Norwood High School is now fully funded by private donations. Typical of planetariums, laser shows and galaxy shows take place in an intimate theater and a small overstocked gift shop bursts with space related gifty items. On the Transit of Venus, a small crowd gathered to watch live-​streaming NASA TV and commiserate about our earth-​bound existence. Dr. Drake himself attended and shared his 82^nd birthday with the eager stargazers gathered under the uncooperative Cincinnati sky. There was quite a bit of excitement on this day, given the event that will not occur for another 205 years. Apparently, the high school students at Norwood have the privilege of taking their science lessons under the stars, which is super cool! This little planetarium could use a little more rocket fuel in the way of more modern technology, a larger dedicated space, and more publicity for events that would truly elevate it to a stellar status.

A staple of Cincinnati since 1982, Drake Planetarium puts on weekly galaxy shows and laser shows on the weekend. Tucked away inside the fourth floor of Norwood High School, this large room can accommodate up to 70 visitors per show and is great for science nerds young and old.
Galaxy shows take place on Sunday afternoons, but the biggest draw, the laser shows, are offered every Friday and Saturday night. Three, hour-​long shows are offered, each of a different theme.

— Holiday Skies, Laser Metallica, and Laser Zeppelin
— Laser Pink Floyd «Dark Side» and «The Wall»
These combinations rotate frequently, so be sure to check the schedule for your show. Or make an evening of it and watch all three shows back-​to-​back.
Expect more from the laser shows than zig-​zagging lights. Animated images are projected onto the dome that move along with the lyrics in the music. Pretty cool!
