Do you care where your food comes from?
Do you consider the consequences of factory farming, on a broader time horizon?
If you answered «no,» you may stop reading and return to your pink slime «burger.»
If it has occurred to you that we as a nation have made untenable choices in exchange for a seemingly limitless food supply (in the short term), and if you would like to do something about that, well then here is an option for you: a local group of disorganized hippies who have nevertheless managed to put together Community Supported Agriculture, meaning a place you can get wonderfully fresh, local vegetables for a reduced price if you buy a «share» and pitch in to help.
Remember what a real tomato tastes like? Remember when they tasted so good that you’d eat them like apples, salting each bite? It had been a while since I’d had food this «real.»
This will be my second year as a member, and to be honest, I have never gotten the reduced price because I cannot commit to working. Saturday mornings at 9AM are the time when most of the help is needed (because pick-​up is Saturday from 10AM-​noon), and Saturday mornings are precious to me & my husband. I want to change the world less than I want to spend time with him. I also happen to know that the CSA typically ends the year with much less money than they need, so this is my way of trying to counteract one problem I know they have.
Also, I would feel dishonest if I didn’t point out that joining a CSA means a good bit of work even if you don’t help plant or compost or harvest the food. You still have to find a way to eat it, and the easiest way of being sure that you will eat it (in just one week) is to try to cook it all at once, or at least get it into an easily edible format all at once. Sometimes it amounts to a lot of food.
I like that the pick-​up is Saturday morning — okay, noon-​ish for me – because that gives me the early afternoon to roast and sauté and package up whatever I have made for lunches & dinners during the week.
I don’t like that I expect to get a letter at the end of the year asking for more money, because the organizers (again) failed to charge enough. Wait, do I dislike that? I do know that if they weren’t trying to change the world, they’d be happy to charge more. A lot more.
