When I lived in Philadelphia in the 1990s, Columbia/CBS started Suncoast Video stores. They had a lot of video tapes and some Laserdiscs, along with posters and items for movie fans. As DVDs came along, they tried to adjust their inventory, but the combination of high prices apparently didn’t work well, and when I was in Philly in June, I didn’t see a Suncoast store anywhere. I’m fairly sure they’re gone from the Orlando, Florida area also. They have products, but it’s cheaper to go to FYE. I never thought I’d say that. Also, they have competition from Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Google, Apple, Netflix, Vudu, etc. etc. I still buy physical media, but I didn’t find their discounted prices compelling, either. If I’m going to pay that much, I’ll get the edition with a digital copy and that can go anywhere with me.

I love this store. They have so much to choose from. I found ever box set to In Living Color. American Dad. Ren & Stimpy. Prison Break.etc.etc. They even had some MAD Magazine collectibles. It’s easy to lose your time in here. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because of the mark up on prices. Many of these items you can find cheaper online. It’s still worth the visit.

When in need of a DVD, this is where I go. They seem to always have exactly what I need. The DVDs are easy to find. Used DVDs are also available for a lower price and I’ve never had any issues with the playback quality of their used DVDs. I prefer Suncoast since I can almost never find the DVD I need at the local video store or on clearance at the latest closing Blockbuster that has the big yellow sign on it that says«This Location Only»(shyea, right). The downside of this store is that you have to deal with all of the Tri-County Mall hoopla, which includes but is not limited to navigating the mall parking lot which was clearly designed by Daedalus. Also, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by someone that is 21 or older as part of a newish mall policy. This doesn’t really affect me, but I think it’s kind of a lame policy. Also, they will try to sell you magazines every time you make a purchase. I already have plenty of clutter in my life. No thanks!
